They say Friday is the best day for any organization - sporting or otherwise - to deliver bad news. Dennis Pitta Jersey . In keeping with this tradition the list that comprised the names of all players let go by Barclays Premier League clubs was released by the league in London this afternoon. At around the same time, credible reports were emerging from Italy that one of footballs truest of legends was Montreal Impact bound. One of the most respected publications that litter the football world going as far as to suggest that a Miami vacationing Alessandro del Piero was indeed in Florida as a guest of Montreal Impact president Joey Saputo. TSN.ca learned this is not the case. As is the suggestion the club has resumed discussions with Del Piero, talks that initially began about this time last year. Although the club were in the midst of their final season in the NASL and firmly focused on the playoffs and ideally their fourth Playoff Championship behind the scenes the club were transitioning themselves to the quantum leap that is Major League Soccer. From the rendering of new Saputo Stadium designs, signing significant long-term corporate partnerships an overhaul on the playing side the primary focus. Unbeknown to Impact fans as they filed through the gates for a home fixture last summer in one of the private loges that litter the covered Grandstand that even houses the media gallery and broadcast booths, Stefano Del Piero was in attendance. A guest of Impact management, he was in town to discuss his brothers next move. And it wont be Montreal. Impact President Joey Saputo informed TSN.ca following extensive reports out of Italy earlier Friday. "The players rep has always said that the interest is in New York or Los Angeles," he said. "We broke off negotiations in August 2011." Saputos response when asked if discussions have resumed was as emphatic as it was brief. "No." He did though admit MLSs 19th franchise had recently been contacted by Del Pieros representatives, presumably to pick back up after it has become apparent that neither the Galaxy nor the Red Bulls were interested in Del Piero. L.A. was already at the DP limit and the Red Bulls were in urgent need and search of a top notch defender. The club declined the overtures from Del Piero. "There is no interest on our part," Saputo added. "More importantly, what is the true interest of the player? Is it only money?" Its well documented the Impact attempted all they could to convince a Del Piero, an Anelka or even a Drogba. Always upper mind to Impact ownership, senior management wasnt what was left in the football gas tank but the motivations of any high priced talent of why they wanted to resume their career in Major League Soccer with the Montreal Impact. This is a club that as a core philosophy has always had the long run in mind. A mandate if you like for any designated player to be suited and booted in Impact blue is what effect the player would have not just on the lush Saputo Stadium pitch but everyone connected with the club. From the reserve team, the academy and all technical and front office staff, their supporters even down to the person who pours the tea. Del Piero - by his own admission that he was looking four square at the Big Apple and Tinsletown bright lights - did not fit that description. The Impact walked away, shunned but better off for the experience. The same occurred last fall in London when Anelka although a player that could really have lit it up in La Belle Ville didnt fit the Impact footprint either. One such ludicrous condition Anelkas agent brother demanded during discussions was a job with the clubs academy. That was then. The Impacts week of course began early Monday morning Bologna time when a British Airways flight from London touched down at Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport carrying some rather highly sought after and extremely valuable football talent. Marco Di Vaio, alongside his wife and young children and escorted by the Impact President and Sporting Director Nick De Santis, emerged into the arrivals terminal to be met by hundreds upon hundreds of delirious Impact supporters. Adorned in their Impact jerseys, flags and banners to make Di Vaio and his family feel welcome they were serenaded in their native Italian tongue. On Monday, Di Vaio was formally introduced at the Impacts bustling downtown offices. He spoke French - learned from his Monaco days and retained. Saputo couldnt hide his delight Monday. Why should he. The extensive and exhaustive year long search was finally over. Earlier this morning as he and Richard Legendre, the clubs second most senior executive were about to lead the media on a tour of their brand spanking new premises ahead of its June 16 inauguration Saputo reflected on Di Vaio a week on. "We found our DP, and are extremely happy with him," he said. He has shown his true commitment to the whole organization." Perhaps those words will echo in Stefano del Pieros office. After meeting his new team mates for the first time at training yesterday, Di Vaio and his family jetted off for a Florida fortnight. No prizes for guessing if this ex-member of the Azzurri is indeed in Miami as a guest of the Impact owner. Ray Rice Elite Jersey . Ambrosini has spent almost his entire career at Milan since signing from Cesena in 1995, apart from a season-long loan at Vicenza. Guard Bian Lan led the Chinese team for the third consecutive night with 23 points, nine assists and six rebounds, while center Chen Nan had 21 points and eight rebounds. Haloti Ngata Elite Jersey .S. Open. The expectations that have followed Tiger Woods this year are a lot like the fairways at The Olympic Club -- up, down, often sideways. Terrell Suggs Youth Jersey . Curtis Granderson hit his 200th career homer and Soriano shook off getting hit on the side of his right hand by a line drive as the Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 4-2 Sunday.PHILADELPHIA -- Hunter Pence let the lead slip away with one big bobble out in right. He atoned for his error an inning later with one big homer to left. Pence redeemed himself for a ninth-inning misplay by hitting his second home run of the game, a solo shot in the 10th that lifted the Philadelphia Phillies over the Houston Astros 4-3 Tuesday. Pence connected off former Philadelphia closer Brett Myers (0-1) with one out to give the Phillies their first three-game winning streak of the season. He was mobbed at the plate in celebration by his easily forgiving teammates while his fielding gaffe was filed to the blooper reel. Pences error in right field while trying to make a throw home allowed Houston to tie it with two outs in the ninth. "I felt horrible that it happened," Pence said. "The team really picked me up." The NL East champions ended a dubious drought with Pences ninth homer of the season. This was the longest stretch of games (37) into a season without a three-game win streak for the Phillies since 1971, when they needed 51 games. "Ive never had a hitter like Hunter," manager Charlie Manuel said, "but hes a good one." Chad Qualls failed to hold a 3-1 lead in the ninth and kept Cliff Lee winless in five starts this season. Lee allowed one run and struck out 10 over eight strong innings. Jake Diekman tossed 1 1-3 scoreless innings to win his major league debut. Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon was shut down for a day after pitching in back-to-back games. That opened the door for a Houston rally against a scuffling bullpen. Carlos Lee hit an RBI single off Qualls to cut it to 3-2. Pinch runner Brian Bogusevic kept the rally going when he stole second. J.D Martinez hit a liner to right and got the hold sign at third. Pence let the ball slip out of his hand as he was preparing to throw and Bogusevic sprinted home for the tying run. "I was charging it hard and I really cant tell you how it came out of my hand," Pence said. "I was trying to fire it as hard as I could." Jason Castro then doubled to chase Qualls and put runners on second and third. Qualls was booed off the mound for the blown save and wasting Lees fantastic effort. Diekman struck out Marwin Gonzalez to end the inning and was rewarded with the victory. Brian Schneider also homered for the Phillies, who won for the fourth time in five gamees and swept the two-game series. Torrey Smith Youth Jersey. Astros manager Brad Mills gambled bringing in Myers for the 10th in a tie game. "Coming into a tie ballgame on the road, I was prepared but, it just baffled me a little bit," Myers said. "I can just go out there and do my job. Thats all I can do when called upon." Mills said Myers was warmed up and wanted to pitch. It was hard to believe the game came down to a closer the way Lee pitched. Lee walked only one and allowed one run in his second start since straining his left oblique. The Phillies had lost all four of Lees starts, including two one-run defeats. Lee was clearly a tough-luck loser. He entered with a 1.68 ERA since June 1 of last season. Schneiders two-run shot in the second and Pences solo homer in the sixth were nearly enough to get Lee back in the win column. The lefty was never in any serious trouble and showed no signs of being slowed down by the injury that put him on the 15-day disabled list. Lee threw 10 scoreless innings on April 18 in a 1-0 loss to the Giants in 11 innings, but landed on the DL a few days later. Matt Downs hit a solo homer off Lee in the seventh. Citizens Bank Park was pounded all morning by rain and the tarp was on the field until just before the first pitch. The stadium was maybe half full for Lees first pitch and there were thousands of empty seats scattered across the park all game. Still, the Phillies announced a crowd of 43,781 for their 222nd straight sellout. Houstons Jordan Lyles, recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City, was betrayed by his defence in the second inning. After a runner reached on a throwing error, Schneider pulled his first homer of the season into the right field seats for a 2-0 lead. Manuel was ejected by plate umpire Bob Davidson in the eighth. Manuel and Davidson argued nose to nose and exchanged profanities to the delight of the crowd chanting "Charlie! Charlie!" Manuel thought a ball had been foul tipped. "I dont even want to talk about that," Manuel said. NOTES: Tennis great Billie Jean King threw out the first pitch. ... Lee collided with umpire Hunter Wendelstedt in the first while trying to make a play on a base hit. Both were briefly down. ... Lyles made the start for Kyle Weiland, who had arthroscopic surgery for an infection in his right shoulder. The Astros optioned RHP David Carpenter to Oklahoma City to make room for Lyles. ' ' ' |
