Character: Carver "Roland" Glade Missions to hand in: Stray Lamb (Hard) New Ability Name: Heartfelt Cry (Soul Perception variant, Reach Out to the Truth upgrade) Effects/Description: After further study of Soul Perception, Roland has added the ability to pick up on emotions in the same way as he can pick up on lies using Reach Out to the Truth, bearing the same restrictions, limitations and range as ROttT. In essence, this ability is solely an upgrade for ROttT that adds emotion detection. In addition, Roland has begun to be able to differentiate readings from different targets by associating colors with them in his head, appearing in RP as the person's speech color. However, he can only keep track of up to 2 people at once, if more people are in range of the ability, Roland loses track of the colors he's associated entirely. Basically, this allows Roland to use his ability on up to two people at once without getting scrambled readings. Any other changes: Addition to Misc: In a meta-sense, Roland has something I'd call Romcom Protag Syndrome, or RCPS for short. So far he has had the unfortunance to have encountered a wide variety of girls and met with awkward situations involving them. He also shies away from romantic interactions. However this is not to say that he will always be this way, in that he is neither guaranteed to always shy away from romance, nor will he necessarily always be surrounded by girls, nor will he necessarily decide to stick with one and have a relationship with them. Here's how I'd think the upgrade would look on the sheet: Technique Name: Reach Out to the Truth (Soul Perception variant) Effects/Description: Roland has (sort of) improved his ability to manipulate his own soul, as well as his sensitivity to other's soul. The most obvious effect of his efforts is visible in his interactions with people. In addition to the tricks and such he picked up while playing games like Poker and his own research on human behavior in order to improve his game, Roland has developed an almost sixth sense when talking to people. This sense makes him more able to pick up on bluffs and lies, though it doesn't decisively tell him when there is a lie, it only gives Roland more information to base his decisions off of. Upgrade Name: Heartfelt Cry Effects/Description: Since the creation of this ability, Roland has further trained his ability to perceive souls. In addition to the ability to detect lies, Reach Out to the Truth now has the ability to detect the emotions of its target(s). The way Roland "feels" the emotions of the target is through a form of feeling them himself. For instance, when he gets angry, he feels a building of pressure in the back right area of his head. When he feels a target's anger, a similar pressure builds, however the feeling feels removed, and Roland is able to associate it to a target's soul wavelength. Reach Out to the Truth can give a false reading, such as when a witch is using Soul Protect, or any other active control of a target's wavelength. ROttT isn't sensitive enough to pick up on the differences between different types of souls (human, witch, etc.), it only registers changes in what has been established as the default wavelength through observation of its most common state. This also means that it is less effective on people Roland has just met, as he hasn't established a starting point. This ability is line-of-sight, within hearing distance. However, it affects anyone currently meeting these conditions, so when multiple people are affected, it gives Roland mixed readings. For its maximum effectiveness, it must be used in a one-on-one, face-to-face situation, such as an interrogation or private conversation. Since the addition of Heartfelt Cry, Roland has begun to be able to differentiate multiple readings at once through a form of Synesthesia, through which he associates wavelengths with a color, which is shown in RP through the speech color of the target(s). Heartfelt Cry brings the number of targets ROland can use ROttT/HC on without getting mixed readings to two. If any more than his current max should be affected by the ability, Roland loses the ability to differentiate completely, and he will not be able to differentiate between any of the readings he's getting. When I originally posted this, I thought that it was a fairly simple upgrade and could probably give a little more, so I added the upgrade relating to multiple targets. I also clarified how I thought it'd appear on the character sheet. | |||

Roland looked around the board at the other players from behind sunglasses, gauging their reactions to the hands they'd just been dealt. The nit and the calling station were easy to read, which was no surprise seeing as how they were fish. The grinder and rock were more experienced though, and they held their facade. The nit, in an obvious tilt after the grinder's last bit of bullying, went all in. Roland picked up on the bluff in part due to his relatively new Soul Perception, though it wouldn't have been hard to see without it. The rock, grinder, and Roland all folded, as they noticed the calling station's tell that he had a weak hand, and decided to leave the weaker players to sort it out in heads up. After a few brief moments of deliberation, the calling station made what Roland picked up on as a hero call. Shaken, the nit folded, leaving him to go to the rail. ---------------------------------------------------- Roland left the small casino he'd snuck into, the small messenger bag slung over his shoulder considerably heavier with his winnings than when he'd entered hours before. He felt a bit guilty about having participated in the gambling, as it was technically illegal until he turned 21, but he did his best to shake the feeling, as he wasn't really hurting anybody. Besides, no one caught him, and he didn't do it very often, only about once a month, so it wasn't really that bad. The conflicted boy glanced around the street, looking for some way to free run up to the rooftops. Finding a large garbage can across the street in a small alley, Roland tightened the shoulder strap of his bag and began to cross the street. "Hey!" Roland stopped, recognizing the voice as belonging to the nit in the last game he'd played. Oh, great, what's this guy want? the boy thought, stepping back onto the sidewalk and giving the man his attention. "I thought it was yah," the man said, smiling smugly. "Remember me? I was in that last poker game yah won." "Yeah, I remember," Roland sighed, "I have working short-term memory after all." "Hey, watch it, I woun't be actin' so cocky if I were yah." "The hell's that supposed to mean?" The man gave a crooked-tooth smile, and Roland felt an odd, giddy sensation spread throughout his body. It felt oddly distant, as if he wasn't actually giddy, but was still experiencing the side effects. "I'll tell yah what it means. I means I know that yer underage, and unless yah hand over those winnings, I'm handin' yah over to the cops. Yah sure look a lot older with those fancy sunglasses on, but I seen yah around that Shibusen. Yah can't hide it kid, yer just some student who snuck in and bribed the dealer, din't yah?" Roland's Soul Perception went off, telling him that the man was bluffing, helping the boy keep his cool and collected exterior, but the sensation was oddly different. The feeling that the man was lying felt like it was connected to the giddy smugness Roland was faintly experiencing, as well inexplicably tied to a shade of red. Doing his best to keep up his poker face, the weapon began calmly addressing the man. "Look sir," he said, "I don't know what got those ideas into your head, but they're wrong. And dealer who took a bribe would be easily caught and fired, possibly even sued and sent to jail. I don't wear glasses to make myself appear older, I use them to hide where I'm looking, a technique many poker players employ to aid in their poker face. As far as any dealings you may or may not have seen between myself and Shibusen, those are my own private matters. Students aren't the only people who may need to interact with Shinigami, the staff, or the students. Older weapons and meisters, relatives and guardians of the students, and many others have valid reasons for needing to regularly interact with the school." The feeling of giddiness had turned into one of an alarmed and defensive preposition. "Sh-shut yer mouth! Yer words don't prove anything! If yah don't show me yer ID, then I'm gonna report yah!" "You have no right to demand identification from me sir. I have absolutely nothing to prove to you." "Why I outta-!" The man went to punch Roland, who easily sidestepped the attack. Before he could wind up for another blow, one of the security guards who'd been carefully watching the situation restrained the man. A new feeling of concerned alarm came over Roland. "Sir, restrain yourself!" the guard said. "Any further motion to attack this man and I will be authorized to use more severe force against you!" Roland felt a slightly different truth reading than he'd felt with the nit. Fear. "H-hey, no need to get all up-in-arms now! I wunint plannin' nuthin'! Lie" "Sir, your actions give a different message than your words." "What seems to be the problem over here?" an employee from the casino said, approaching the scuffle. As the man entered the range of Roland's Soul Perception, the readings it gave became garbled and mixed, as it usually did when more than one person was being affected by it. The situation easily diffused from this point, the nit folding under the employee's scrutiny, retreating from the scene. The employees apologize to Roland for the incident before returning to their stations, thankfully not asking for identification after Roland said didn't need them to file a police report when they offered. A little rattled, Roland finally left via the rooftops. ---------------------------------------------------- Finally, the weekend came to a close, as did school the following Monday. Still curious about the odd sensations he'd felt during his near miss with the law, Roland decided to visit Stein after class. The weapon found his teacher leaning back in his chair, feet propped up on his desk as he napped lazily. Unsure of whether to bother the professor or not, Roland hovered awkwardly in the threshold, debating his options. "Do you have some business with me Roland?" Stein opened an eye, giving Roland a sidelong glance. A bit surprised for a moment, he entered. "Er, yessir, I have some more questions for you about Soul Perception." "Shoot." Roland explained the events of his weekend gambling, finding it unavoidable that he find out as it might be important to discovering the cause of the changes to his ability. After musing over the information for a while, Stein spoke up. "You know, I could report you to the police, and you'd be in some serious trouble." Roland nodded grimly. Stein chuckled before continuing. "Relax, I won't. At least, I won't this time, as you seemed to have improved your Soul Perception as a result of the incident. Your Soul Perception was relatively weak to begin with, but by using it as much as you did in such a stressful situation, it's ability improved. It is interesting that it should expand from detecting lies to detecting emotions though, rather than a more conventional progression of identifying the soul's type, such as human or witch." "So is that not supposed to happen?" "Who can really say? Every soul is unique, so I'm not sure you can really classify its growth as normal or abnormal. All you can really say is that its ability has grown in its own way. Personally, I think you may find the ability to pick up emotions more practical than being able to differentiate types. You are already fairly accomplished at picking up on a person's tells, but actually knowing their state of mind gives you even more information to work off of. You even seemed to have picked up on a way to interpret multiple sets of readings at once, even if it is currently limited to two at a time. If you keep practicing, I'm sure there are more improvements to your Soul Perception in your future." Roland thanked his teacher for his time and explanation, leaving with two new resolves. His first resolve was to continue trying to improve, no matter where that took his abilities. The second, well, the second was to never enter another casino until he was legally able to, unless a mission required it, as unlikely as it might be. Almost getting in a world of trouble can definitely impact a person's world views after all. |
