Clothing and description: At full height, Vox stands nearly six feet tall, but tends to be found in a low stance that could only be described as 'predatorial'. Through a spattering of dirt, tan skin can be seen, as well as a body that was at one point well taken care of; muscular but not overly so. He is not filthy, only enough so that one can tell his priorities have shifted elsewhere, and standing close to him, one might even catch a slight whiff of a purchased fragrance. His feet are bare, with loose wrappings of bandages in varying states of dirty and torn. Light brown pants that are tattered at the calf-line are his only true clothing, a well used, reliable pair that has buckles running down either side, ending at the knee.

However, the first thing you would notice is his face; his eyes hidden by a blindfold covered in nonsensical markings, his ragged, dirty brown hair, and the steady stream of blood leaking from his mouth. Vox is not blind, but while he retained some semblance of sanity, he wore a blindfold to hide his bloodshot, unnatural eyes. It is a thin fabric that cannot be seen through at a distance, but when wore directly over the eyes, allows normal vision. Like his body, if one looks closely enough, they could tell that at some point he was a vain man, with sharp features. His voice is surprisingly smooth, not what one would expect with his appearance, although he is prone to speak in a loud whisper, causing his voice to come out raspy and seemingly strained.

History:
  • Early Days: Jako grew up on Disney sing-alongs, in the car on the way to kindergarten, at home, and before bed. Instead of having his parents read him a story, he would grab the oversized cassette player, and sternly push it towards his parents. Just a child, he could in no way sing with any sort of rhythm or tone, but he loved it nonetheless.

All too keen to foster their child’s hobby, they started him on real music as soon as he was old enough, and it opened up a whole new world to him. He sang to all of it, to The Offspring, to opera, to hip-hop… And by the time he was 17 he had fostered a wonderful talent in vocals. He was by no means the best, but he was absolutely driven to listen to everything he could, and to practice whenever he had time. He joined choir group in high school, and hooked up with some of his friends to become the lead singer for their band, “Resonance”.

  • Torn Apart: Years passed, and Jako had become an exceptionally skilled vocalist. He started getting offers to perform, initially at smaller venues, but quickly snowballing into large cities and big events. He was never ‘famous’ like some might describe, but those who knew him, liked him, and occasionally he was even recognized.

Enjoying a moderately well-financed lifestyle, he spent a good deal of his free time traveling with his fiancé, Sarah. She was the only thing he loved more than his music, and she was with him at every show. Sarah was a relatively normal girl, friendly, loved music, and was absolutely infatuated with Jako. They were the kind of couple you wouldn’t describe as ‘inseparable’, but they certainly would be the first couple you’d invite over for dinner; fun, friendly, and easygoing.

Sometime in December, Jako and Sarah were leaving an opera in Los Angeles. It was not Sarah’s favorite, but Jako had begged her to go, and she had finally consented. The sidewalks were being dusted by a light snow as they walked out, the couple surrounded by a group of 5-10 whose cars were all parked behind the theatre as well. As the group traveled through the dark walkway, the city became eerily silent. The excited discussion of the show turned to a whisper, then faded entirely as the group became intensely aware of the unnatural silence. A dark shape dropped in the front of the group, and before anyone could react, it had split two of the people in half, leaving a streak of blood up one side of the building. It charged forth, some sort of monster, it was too hard to tell, tearing people apart effortlessly. Jako turned to run, gripping Sarah tighter as his only confirmation that she was still behind him. But suddenly, she stopped, and he could not pull her any farther. He turned, and saw her, with a surprised look on her face, and three sharp claws jutting out of her chest. He didn’t have time to cry out before the other set of claws cut her in half, and she crumpled to the ground.

  • Descent: The Kishin egg had stopped just before it cut Jako down, its head nosing up into the air, hearing or smelling something that Jako could not perceive. Just like it had appeared, it ran off. Jako cried out over the body of his fiance, wanting to be close to her and yet unable to look at the massacre that had been inflicted. He wailed just to make noise, to let out pain that he could not express in any other way. Out of breath, he finally slumped to the ground next to her, his eyes clearing of tears enough for him to see the blue orb floating above her body. He noticed the same among the other bodies. He grabbed her soul possessively, unsure of what to do. In the end, he left the carnage quickly, taking Sarah’s soul, and the others, with him.

He poured through as many books as he could, cutting all ties with his family and friends. He searched for a way to bring his fiancé back to life. The hope he had felt when he collected her soul faded as he found that even possessing her soul could not bring her back. It tormented him that he could touch it, feel it, remember her, but was still helpless. Everything he read told him that collecting innocent souls was dangerous, and beyond that, could find little.

Weeks and weeks of fevered searching and study took its toll on Jako, and he slowly went mad through isolation and panic. He started to wear a piece of fabric over his bloodshot eyes, as he had a seen a punk rock singer do once. As a last ditch attempt, when not in his right mind, he consumed the other souls, hoping that in some way it would help him bring her back.

  • After Effect: Vox became a monster, hunting more souls, unsure of his real motives. Being able to hold on to only fragments and wisps of his former life and memory, he does not know why he is driven to certain things and why he may choose to do what he does. He carries the soul of his fiance with him everywhere, although he does not recognize it as such anymore, he knows that it is significant and is always protective of it.

Personality: Vox, driven insane by isolation and desperation, acts as though he would prefer to be alone, but likes the company of other Kishin eggs. He is comfortable with those he can identify with, whether they be civilians, witches, or other Kishin eggs. Generally, he is quiet and focused, like a big cat prowling through the African bush, or a sniper holding their breath before a shot. This is not to say he is incapable of reason, he is more than able to hold a conversation, but when left to his own devices, his actions may be more sadistic than thought out. Left over from when when he was far more sane, Vox likes to think he is a strategist, planning his actions out, finding the best vantage point, and thinking out escape routes. However, his tactical mindset is off-set by incredibly impulsive decision-making brought on by his psychosis. Most plans begin with careful thought, but often end in rampant chaos.

Like many people, certain elements of his personality will manifest themselves stronger depending on who he is with. When alone, or with other equally psychotic beings, he will act as such, but when with a well spoken and logical person, he is more likely to hold a conversation and be generally more amiable.

Although his departed fiance is not even a memory anymore to Vox, she affects him far more than he knows. He has pushed the idea of his dead fiance so far into the recesses of his mind, he cannot even recall her existence. However, he carries her old locket around his wrist, and keeps her soul in a pocket attached to his jeans. Upon inquiry, he cannot explain to anyone, much less himself, the importance they hold, only that they do, and MUST be kept safe. He also finds an odd longing to the company of women, due to the physical absence, yet continuous presence of his dead fiance, although he does not know that. Of course, he rarely takes the time to enjoy conversation and pleasantries with the civilians whose souls he is so intent on devouring.

Due to Vox's deafness, he may seem to be lost in thought when actually he is unaware of what is happening around him. Often physical contact of some sort is the only way to get his attention, though after that is done, his lip-reading allows normal conversations to be held. So far, Vox has found being deaf to be only a slight detriment, being that his incredibly loud abilities make holding a conversation in battle to be a difficult idea.

Abilities:

  • Sonic Lance
After drawing in a breath and aligning his voice to the resonant frequency of the air in front of him, Vox emits an incredibly loud dissonant beam in an area in front of him, 20 yards long and 3 feet in diameter. Sound waves are not visible, but the effect creates a distortion similar to looking through heat waves or a fish-eye lens. The dissonance causes kinetic force equivalent to being struck by a moving vehicle to the first target, weakening as more targets are hit. Trained, competent fighters are more resistant to the effect, and it will take at least 3 hits (more or less depending on their own abilities and defenses) to knock them out of the fight.

In addition, due the incredible amount of noise generated, those caught within the epicenter of the dissonance will suffer severe trauma to their hearing (Civilians will possibly suffer ruptured eardrums, while trained, competent fighters will only suffer temporary deafness for ~15 seconds, increasing with consecutive hits in a short time period), those within 10-20ft cone in front of him will experience ringing in the ears for about 10 seconds, and all glass (excluding safety and bulletproof glass) will shatter up to 50ft away.

This ability is a burst, and cannot be maintained. Since it requires significant exertion, it takes at least 30 seconds for it to be used again. In addition, due to the need for a full breath beforehand, it is difficult to use when Vox is out of breath or otherwise unable to take a deep breath.

  • Reverberate
Vox takes a quick breath and releases it in a loud, close range burst, knocking back anyone in front of him. The reverberation is created in a conical pattern, reaching 3 feet in front of him, the edges of the cone widening to a diameter of about 6 feet. The force generated is enough to not cause significant damage, although it will blast people or objects back with force, an average sized person being tossed up to 10ft away, while heavier/lighter people or objects being thrown less far/farther away respectively. The force is not enough to stop high velocity projectiles, although it could slow an arrow or light weapon to a non-lethal speed.

In addition, those caught in the direct sound wave will suffer moderate hearing damage (Temporary deafness for civilians, and ringing in the ears for 10 seconds for trained or otherwise competent fighters), and normal glass within 20ft will shatter. Vox can sustain Reverberate, but any attempt to sustain it longer than 5 seconds, or many Reverberates in quick succession will leave him out of breath and unable to use it until he catches his breath.

  • Maddening Frequency
While not otherwise occupied with speaking, emitting attacks, or being out of breath, Vox constantly hums and mumbles tunes of his own making. They sound similar to what one might write for a symphony orchestra to play - yet it sounds strangely unnatural. The sound carries much farther than a normal hum - roughly the distance that one would be able to hear someone speaking in a loud tone of voice or shouting - but are never perceived as being louder than a gentle hum. All those who listen to the twisted song are moderately exposed to a aura of madness, which awakens the insanity within them. Longer exposure will cause the listener to be affected to a greater degree. It takes roughly 15-20 minutes for the listener to begin to suffer serious side-effects and have their personality significantly altered by madness.

Once the listener is no longer exposed to the music, they will return to normal at a rate roughly twice as fast as it took them to reach that point (I.e., someone who listens for 10 minutes will return to normal over the next 5 minutes.) Anyone who has hearing protection will be aware of the aura, but will not be effected by it - much like being aware of a cold breeze while wearing a heavy jacket.

Combat Style: Vox prefers to engage his opponents at range, taking a position where they will have difficulty reaching/be unable to reach him, buying time to use his Sonic Lance as they attempt to close the gap. Having a fairly slim build, Vox has retained his natural light-footedness; affording him decent mobility to keep his enemies at distance should they move in. If he must engage an enemy in close combat, he will attempt to keep them away with Reverberate. He is unskilled in melee combat and will use it as a last resort, or to finish a victim who is already incapacitated or otherwise unable to defend themselves.

Miscellaneous Information:

  • Shortly after becoming a Kishin Egg, with thorough use of his abilities, Vox ruptured both of his ear drums, making him almost entirely deaf. He can still hear incredibly loud sounds, but cannot make out details.

  • Vox can read lips, a skill he originally experimented in when he was younger, but found he could use with decent proficiency after becoming a Kishin Egg.
Due to his excessive use of damaging sound abilities, the soft tissue in his mouth is in a constant state of injury and healing, which manifests as a continuous light trickle of blood out of one corner of his mouth. This does not effect his speech.

  • Sound Underwater: Since Vox requires breath to use his abilities, he would have to have taken a breath beforehand, be using scuba gear, or otherwise be able to breath underwater.
    • Sound travels faster underwater than it does through air, so any of Vox's abilities used underwater have their range increased. If the ability is used underwater but leaves the water, it can go no farther than its normal range.
Humans hear much worse underwater than in air, and as such, the hearing damage from Vox’s abilities are significantly weakened under water.

Strengths:
  • Adept at long-range combat
  • Sound based abilities cause hearing damage in addition to kinetic damage, as well as making it difficult for enemies to communicate
  • Can repel close-range assaults with Reverberate
  • Quick on his feet.

Weaknesses:
  • Nature of his abilities makes subtlety nearly impossible
  • Reliant on being able to breath deeply to use abilities, makes fighting when winded or in less-than-favorable conditions difficult
  • Mostly deaf
  • No close combat abilities aside from Reverberate, little melee fighting prowess. If the gap is closed and Vox is surprised, out of breath or otherwise disabled, he would not be able to defend himself.
  • The likelihood of impulsive decisions make it possible for him to be put in a position where he is not prepared or able to defend.

Roleplay Sample: The warehouse was quiet, save for the loud and especially irritating sounds of the docks that managed to worm their way through the rotten boards and broken windows into the large, central room. Abandoned boxes and shipping machinery lay haphazardly around the room, gathering dust. Vox, crouched just a short distance from a set of double-doors, waited quietly. He stared intently at the doors, immobile except for the slow rise and fall of his chest, and a steady *pat….pat….pat* from the blood leaking out of his mouth, hitting the concrete floor.

A glint through the window signified movement, and Vox sat up. Then there was more, flashlights, and silhouettes. He could not hear it, but he could imagine it: the sound of fabric on fabric as the police moved into position, magazines being loaded into pistols, and orders being delivered in anxious tones. Then the door handle shook. Vox planted his feet and drew in a breath.
Ssfffffffffffffffff…..

The door opened, two officers came in quickly, pistols at the ready.

KHHAAAAAAAAA!!" Vox let loose a dissonance that distorted the air it traveled through, hitting the first officer in the chest, blowing him apart. The second officer was launched back into the frame as door tore off its hinges, tumbling into the group outside. Every window in the warehouse blew outward simultaneously, leaving the sound of broken glass tinkling to the ground even after the reverberations had ceased.

Out of breath, Vox quickly crawled to one of the many supporting columns that were evenly spaced around the vacant warehouse. There were large pins set into opposing sides, to provide a makeshift ladder during construction or maintenance. He shimmied his way up and into the rafters as the police regained their sense.

What the duck! What happened to Anderson?
Oh my god, my ears…
Get on your feet, come on,
Jesus they won’t stop ringing…

Vox pulled himself up onto one of the main rafters, and worked his way out to the center, watching the recovering officers work their way into the warehouse. He glanced over to the doorway, and admired his handiwork: the battered doorway and what was left of the two frontmen.
Haheheheh….

The officers were much more cautious now, shining their flashlights into every corner, pistols up. The three of them stood in a loose group, stepping slowly, occasionally reaching up to rub a finger in their ear. Vox waited patiently on the large beam. He was beginning to breath normally again. He leaned over the edge a bit, gripping a dusty metal pipe that ran parallel to the beam.
Ssfffffffffffffffff…..” he let his head fall into his chest as he inhaled.
HHYHHHHHAAAAAAA!!” Vox rocked back on the beam, holding himself steady by tightly gripping the pipe. The sound beam hit one unsuspecting officer in the back, sending him flying across the warehouse in multiple different directions at once, leaving only a streak where he once stood. Vox took the opportunity to engage them while they were stunned, gasping for breath as he was, to shimmy across the beam and back down to the floor, jumping the last few yards. He moved on the remaining two officers as they held their ringing ears.

The first saw him charging, and attempted to level his gun. Vox was already upon him, releasing a shrill burst of sound that sent him tumbling backwards. Before he could get on his feet, Vox leapt on top of him, and snapped his neck. The last officer had completely regained his senses, and pointed his gun at Vox, who quickly hauled up the man he had just dispatched, using him as a shield. The other officer fired his weapon, panicked, using all of his ammo on his former comrade. When he was sure that the man was out of ammo, Vox dropped the corpse and darted towards him. Unable to reload in time, he was struck by a similar burst of sound, throwing him on his back and rupturing his eardrums. He clutched at his ears in pain. Vox stalked towards him, slowly regaining his breath, blood leaking from the corner of his mouth. If you happened to be at the dock that day, you would’ve heard a wave of noise from the far southeast corner, where the abandoned warehouse lay. Then, silence.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
