Character Name: Hong Bai

Age: 13

Gender: Male

Type: Weapon(Battle Fan)

Partnered? No

Image:Posted Image

Clothing and description: Hong stands at a somewhat short 5’. His body structure itself is lithe, small and almost fragile looking for a boy. His arms are long and don’t carry much muscle mass, but they’re quite flexible. His legs appear stronger, at least, but not much better in terms of pure-muscle value. His skin is a light tanned color, as per his heritage. His hands are slightly smaller than the average male his age, however they are rough to the touch, as if there has been a lot of work done with these hands already. The same could be said for his feet and shoulders, weathered as if through a storm.

His face is rounded and paleish with slightly colored cheeks that make him look almost female if one were to focus solely upon his face. His lips are small and almost always creasing, often looking cracked and in need of hydration that he does not take part in. His almond-shaped eyes are a caramel color, but they often darken when he narrows or half-closes his eyes, causing them to look either a very dark hue of brown, or even black. His eyebrows appear to be well maintained-For whatever reason-, and keep a slight arch to them. His hair is a brunette colored, dried by the sun and slightly coarse and rough if one were to touch it at all. It's cut a little clumsily, but falls around his ears and down his neck, over his face as well. He'll comb it back if it really troubles him, but normally he doesn't bother.

His normal clothing consists of comfortable clothes. A red, large T-shirt in warm weather, accompanied with tan shorts and black sandals to wear for the lower half of him. It’s not often that he changes from this outfit, unless it becomes chilly. Upon that, he’ll change to a somewhat-tight black sweater and long jeans, black boots to accompany these. These clothes all have one thing in common, though-they’re all surprisingly well kept, but they’re all the same, whether in summer or winter. He’ll also always be wearing a pink flower in his hair, despite the fact that it makes him look more feminine that necessary. The flower itself looks real and feels real to the touch. He will insist to wear a form of kimono or yukata if he really is being brought to something formal. The kimono or yukata will always have scarlet and red colors with golden linings and insignias or pictures. It will be antique in age, but still well kept, as with all the rest of his clothing.

His weapon form is that of a large fan, a deep blood red color with a golden dragon painted onto the front that glimmers in the light. The fan itself is made for an adult or older teenager to wield, thus making it harder for even children to pick it up. It weighs around forty-to-fifty pounds. The fan has pink tufts of fur, or some kind of material, at the ends, usually concealing the strong steel blades jutting out when a person opens the fan entirely. There are little golden-colored ropes tied around the base of the fan into a fancy little bow, as well. It could reasonably still be used for a hot summer day, but you would need to be careful in how far you open it up and be careful not to hit yourself with it. After all, it’s almost entirely pure metal. When closed up, it is around two feet long. When open, it goes to be two and a half feet across, to about 150 degrees.

His soul is in the shape of a water-lily, but it is a murky pink color, almost sickly looking and weak. While this is only looks, it almost wavers in worry at all times, wilting. It stays closed in and to itself. The face on it has closed eyes and a blank expression, as if in deep thought.

History: Hong grew up in a province of China. Not a rich one, not one in the city, one of the more rural areas, on a farm. He grew up as per normal, working as a hardened child of the Bai family. After all, did not one good to dishonor one’s family. Up till the age of eight, he was quite proud of his work with his family, and so were his parents.

Despite this, he often found himself longing for something else to do. While he and his family worked so hard, they hardly made enough money for luxuries. The most he could do was celebrate in local festivals, if they had the time. He was always very envious of those that lived in urban areas that got to enjoy the more modern ways of living, so as he heard.

His parents discouraged any of this thinking, saying that he needed to find a good wife to marry, to settle down and continue living on, just as his family had done for centuries. He couldn’t say no to his family, right? They took care of him like parents would, and he would need to act in honor of that.

At least, this was all well and good until he, under some clumsy circumstance, set half of their lovely home on fire. In reality, he had been so hot, he wanted for the fire to go away. The burning torch was just above him, he wouldn't have hit it, right? Thus, he simply waved his hand towards the flame, an attempt to somehow fan the smoke off-and then it was knocked over and right into the wall and floor made of wood. He toppled over in the process from the alarming weight that followed and then vanished afterwards. Their home and relatively the majority of their farm gone, Hong very well thought he was going to die, whether by fire or by his own parents because of his great foolishness.

No, none of this happened. Instead, his parents picked up what little pieces they had and explained that they would live through this. The Bai family, of course, would not be held down by something so simple as a fire.

He and his family moved to a more urban area, and his parents worked so very hard, attempting to make up the money for actually living there. They were farm folk, living in a city area. He himself had difficulties, especially when he began to go to school. The fact that his arm kept on changing into this heavy fan did not help him in that fact at all. His parents were quite frankly worried when this kept happening-He nearly cut their faucet out one time it happened.

While managing to not cut anyone in half in school, he didn't exactly excel in it. Due to the curriculum being difficult and so many stressing factors already on his mind, he tended to fall behind. He wasn't dumb in any sort, in fact he learned fast, he simply wasn't able to focus on it as much as would be a good limit.

It took his family at least two more years (and strict rules), until they did find out why this was happening. They learned of a school for people like their child-but could they afford it? Another year of hardships was then placed, and Hong himself worked very hard to attain what he needed. He didn’t want to cause another fire-or something worse, especially not somewhere so urban as this.

He learned English completely, as that’s the native language to the place he would be sent to, and studied all he could of that area. What would be necessary and not necessary? He also did what he could to learn of the school he was going to, Shibusen. He was twelve, going on thirteen, by the time that his family barely made enough money for the trip and other utilities that were required. His parents were against this. He was almost against this. Almost. He didn't share his want to stay, though, just due to that one little inkling, one wish for adventure. He wasn't out of the country, he wasn't out of his village until after the fire. He wanted to see what another world was like. Because of this, he took a selfish choice, though also wanting to learn to control his tranformation better.

Once he had everything prepared, he was sent off. He said a simple goodbye to his parents, promising to honor them even when they aren’t in the same country. He would make the Bai family known in this new world that he was going to.

Upon arriving, he did nothing short of going straight towards Shibusen and quickly applying as a student. A new student-a weapon. He has no idea what he’s in for at all.

Personality: Hong can easily be described as a quiet boy who stands in a corner and does absolutely nothing. He’s not that simple to explain. Yes, he is a quiet, modest boy. He was raised to be that way. However, he’s also very perceptive. He watches everyone and often notes certain things about people down, even if he’ll never meet them again. He does this same thing with buildings. If the building is detailed enough, he'll spend at least fifteen minutes scoping the outside of it with great interest and curiosity crossed up all on his face. He's fascinated by them.

He’ll often become worried if anything such as violence takes place in front of him, but he won’t do anything about it unless it’s directed at him, and at most, he’ll run away. He hates violence, but he won’t stand up to it. He's too scared he'll die-or get hurt and be unable to do anymore work.

Hong is a person who takes everything and attempts to hold onto it for as long as it lasts. He’s not one to waste things, not material things, not things that he can’t literally hold, such as relationships. Although he might not like someone, that doesn't mean he’ll make an enemy out of them on purpose. You never know when you might need their help, after all. The most he would do is stare at them for longer than necessary, mapping out who they are. The person that he likes and dislikes is difficult to follow. He won't mind if people are near him, nor if they talk to him. He'll be confused, but he won't be bothered by it unless they start showing hostile intentions. He has no preference for gender or of race, he'll talk to anyone if they'll talk to him. They would have to initiate conversation, but he would attempt to put forth effort after that.

That being said, he’s not outwardly friendly, either. He’s quiet, and he doesn’t speak up very often. In Fact, he doesn't stand out at all. He won’t bother anyone unless he really needs something done, or they bother him first. He’s not used to anyone wanting to be friends with a farm-boy such as him, thus making it hard for him to understand how those concepts exactly work. In a way, he's shy. He takes promises seriously, and he will not make one if he knows he cannot do what he is promising. He will believe someone when they promise something to him, but if they do break that promise, he'll not trust them again unless something repairs that.

He works very hard, and he doesn't like not doing something productive. He lived where every minute you had to be doing something to help your family, or else you would starve. Thus, he has no qualms with doing favors or jobs that many would find mundane and boring. Do you want him to clean the house? Sure. He'll do almost anything if it's not exactly life threatening.

On the subject of Shibusen, he can’t put words on how he thinks of it, he’s brand new to it, thus having no real experiences to speak of. He thinks it needs to expand and make more schools, that way he didn’t have to move so far away, but at the same time, he’s thankful just for it existing. He has a clue of what Kishin Eggs and Witches are, but he’s unable to put an opinion on them. Witches, as he’s learned, can be both bad and good. He assumes the same thing for Kishin eggs, almost childishly so, but one can always hope.

He has an idea of how computers work, but anything like smartphones or gaming devices are something that he's alien to. He knows that they exist, knows they're a type of fun, but he has no idea why, or how to get one, nor does he have any interest in actually obtaining one for himself. The United States of America is a strange place to Hong, but he hasn't explored it enough to be fearful or hateful of it at all. He's intrigued by it at the least, and wishes to learn more when he has the time.

When presented with different emotions, Hong often reacts in similar ways. If he's quite pleased, he'll put on a light smile, and perhaps he'll even socialize more. Normally, though, he'll keep to himself, unless his cause for happiness is someone else. When angered, he'll simply stare, frown. He'll stay away from what angered him. He doesn't indulge in taking out anger, and instead waits it out, or does some chore to slowly get rid of it. When sad, he'll act almost the same as if he's happy, stay away from anyone, keep to himself. Yet, what causes him sadness will be avoided unless it is a person and decides to follow after him when he inevitably leaves. When he is scared, he will simply freeze up and go mindless unless snapped out of it. He doesn't do well with fear, it's one of his weaknesses in any case.

Although he keeps to himself a lot, he's very interested in learning more about just about anything. If allowed, he will venture out and go to random places, observe the areas, observe the people, just for the want to do so. It intrigues him, how certain people act, how things are built. He admires art in this sense, as well, whether sculpture or architecture, even gardens or outfits. Anything out of the ordinary is something he would like to see.

Abilities:

Technique Name: Partial-Transformation
Effects/Description: Hong, when under the right circumstances such as the right state of mind, can transform his hands or forearms into battle-fans, one on each arm, but only one at a time. He's unable to transform more than one part of him. The battle-fan is as big as what would be his full form, overly-large for him and kind of heavy. This is used for combat purposes, but mostly to block or bash, not cut unless on accident. He can only do this when he is not in panic and is able to focus on it. If he's being actively attacked, he'll be unable to do the partial transformation until the hostility is veered away from him. When transforming his hand, it only materializes the fan part at around 5" across and vertically, not the handle, and the fan is open according to the way his hand would be. If his hand was in a fist, it would be closed. If his hand was spread open, it would almost be fully spread, but can only reach 100 degrees. It's still heavy for a hand, being 15 lbs when his hand isn't even weighing in at a full pound. If materializing from his forearm, it becomes the full fan, still without the handle. It reacts the same as if he'd materialized it from his hand, though the handle works as the replaced limb, except without a wrist. This version weighs 35 pounds.

Combat Style: Hong is extremely new at fighting, and thus he’s very reckless. If forced to fight, he will attempt to evade anything trying to hit him and hit back at whatever he can get, sometimes transforming his arms into the battle fan, but that’s normally just chance, if he can think on it fast enough-and even then, he'll normally fall if he does such a thing. If the option is open, he will run from his attacker as fast as he can. Because he's been used to long walks back and forth, he can outrun his pursuer in a stamina test, and he's faster on his feet than one would expect of someone so short as himself.

Anyone more experienced in fighting than him can easily overpower him due to his inexperience. He could take down someone if they were very foolish, perhaps, but he himself would need the luck.

Miscellaneous Information: Hong has a great fear of fire due to the incident that he caused back at his home country.

Strengths:
  • For this section try to summarise your character's combat advantages ^_^ (eg: Really fast- can turn invisible - has super sniper skills)
  • Smaller than average, harder to hit.
  • Perceptive(He reads what he's focusing on.)
  • High Stamina
  • Quick Feet

Weaknesses:
  • For this section try to summarise your character's combat disadvantages ^_^ (eg: Can't hit anything red - Really dumb at strategy - gets tired after a few attacks)
  • Extremely Inexperienced
  • Doesn’t Understand Battle Tactics
  • Does not know how to wield his weapon.
  • Focuses on only one thing at a time.

Roleplay Sample:

((For any thoughts that I put into italics, I remind you that he does not think in English, more in a Mandarin dialect.))

So big. Thought the boy as he hugged his bag closer to himself, a blank look crossing his face as he almost nervously scanned the area in front of him. Despite living in an urban environment for at least three years, he wasn’t used to anything like /this/. It was crowded and loud. How would he find his way to the school? Or something like that, at least. Standing upon his tip toes, he hopped up a few times, gaining the looks of a few passer-bys, before he noticed the fact that there was a giant building that looked very strange and symmetrical. Sighing, he quickly began to move in that direction.

Hong kept turning his head left and right, eyes drawing to different people. There were so many different kinds of person in here-is this was multicultural meant? He had to think for a moment what people were saying as he passed, not that he put them to mind.

Bumping into a few people, he apologized in his native tongue and continued onwards, not wanting to waste his time or anyone else's. After finally reaching the front of the school, he spent a good deal amount of time simply staring up at it and gawking with his mouth partially open and eyes somewhat glazed over. It’s so...large. Am I going to be lost here?

“Do you need help with something?” a female voice asked, causing him to jump.

Hong jumped with a start, eyes wide and each pupil dilated, before he turned, eyeing the female in a school uniform. He opened his mouth, then closed it, then opened it once more.

“...Where...do I sign in for school?” He asked after finally gaining his tongue.

The girl let out a chuckle, tugging on his arm and pulling him towards the school.

Hi there Sara, I'll be taking care of your modding today. I know you've already been well greeted in the cbox but I still feel I should say, Welcome to 42! We hope you'll enjoy your time here as much as we enjoy having you. But since I'm not too good at sappy greeting speeches, let's just jump into the meat of things, shall we?

Clothing and Description
First of all I'd like to say, this is one of the best appearance descriptions I've seen from a new member in quite some time. I'm incredibly impressed with the amount of thought you put into not just what Hong looks like, but how to communicate that image in your head in a way that is both understandable and appealing to read. The only thing I found that I would like to know a little bit more about is his hairstyle. You describe the color and even texture of his hair, but don't really mention its length or overall style. If you could just add a bit about that, I think this section will pretty much be ready to go. ^^

History
This section as well is nicely laid out and detailed, but there are a few more questions I have to ask here, just for clarification's sake. First of all, you say that he set his family's farm on fire with his partial transformation, but it's not entirely clear how. I assume there was a torch or fireplace that he accidentally blew onto the dry wood, but this isn't made clear in the wording of this paragraph. If you could just clarify the initial source of the fire I think that would be a big help.

Next, I wanted to ask about this portion of the ninth paragraph: "His parents were against this. He was almost against this. Almost." Reading these sentences, I took away from it that his parents were against the idea of him going to Shibusen, and that Hong was as well, though not as completely. If both he and his parents were against the idea, why did they work so hard to gather enough funds to send him? And in exactly what way was Hong "almost" against the idea?

Personality
This section is incredibly well thought out and flows very nicely. Though I do feel it might help my understanding of Hong's character a bit if you discussed a little about how he deals with various emotions and reacts to certain situations. As he is written now Hong almost sounds like a robot to me, responding to any given event with a totally logical reaction devoid of any emotion. I'd like to know a little bit more about what he's like when he's angry, sad, or happy. And what kinds of things trigger those emotions for him? Also, he seems to have a very curious streak, which I'd love to hear a little more about, if you don't mind. ^^

Abilities
First off, just thought I should mention that you don't need to have the summary line in the ability section headline. Just the individual technique is fine. Also, as has been said, any abilities not listed in his ability section at character creation will be unavailable to him until he learns them in a training thread. I don't think that will be an issue here, but I just wanted to reiterate it for the sake of thoroughness.

Partial-Transformation
Could you tell me a bit about what the "right circumstances" for his partial transformation are? Is it when he's scared? Angry? When he makes a certain hand motion? Having abilities that can only be used under certain conditions can be very difficult to RP sometimes, and having those conditions clearly defined so that both you and the people you're RPing with can know what to expect can be very helpful. Also, I'd like to know what the difference is between transforming just his hand or his whole forearm? And a little more about what the partial transformation actually looks like in both versions would be helpful as well. Also, you mention that his weapon form doesn't cut except on accident. Is this because he tries to avoid using the blades in combat, or because he has difficulty forming a blade, like Tsugumi from Soul Eater NOT?

Combat Style
I'd like to see mention of Hong's clumsiness with his partial transformation here, since the difficulty he has with its weight would have an obvious effect on combat. Also, could you give me a little bit more indication how agile Hong is? How easily can he evade attacks, and since his primary battle tactic seems to be retreat, how good is he at escaping from a pursuer?

Strengths & Weaknesses
You mention here that he is both perceptive and that he only focuses on one thing at a time. This seems a little bit contradictory to me, but perhaps you could give a little clearer idea of what you mean by perceptive in order to clarify that for me? Also, I remember reading about his perceptiveness in his personality, but not this tunnel vision he apparently has. Could you add a bit about this singular focus of his into his personality for me?

Overall
I really like the way Hong is shaping up as a character. He seems like he'll be a really interesting character to see develop. And I also have to say, I'm quite impressed with the overall quality of this profile, particularly to be your first character here on 42. There are really only a few points of clarification I'd like to see addressed, and I feel like once we've cleared them up we'll have a really well crafted profile here ready for RPing. I would like to ask you for one more thing though, if you could give our forum's rules another read through, I think that would be a big help to you. ;) Keep up the good work Sara. ZX out.
