The latest and *fingers crossed* final rewrite for Sonia, who is now Aria, is as follows: Character Name: Aria Hibiki Age: 17 Gender: Female Type: Harmonic Meister Partnered? No Image: ![]() Clothing and description: Aria stands at the relatively average height of 5'6'', with a lithe and athletic build. Her muscles are very well defined and readily apparent, though she still has a rather slim figure. Her clearly Japanese skin tone has a bit of a natural tan to it, giving it a vital, healthy appearance. Her breasts are rather small, bordering between the high end of A-cup and the low end of B, though her relatively slender build helps to accentuate them a bit. Her soft featured face is fairly round, but with a slight, gentle taper to her chin. Her dark brown hair is naturally fairly straight, and she keeps it a little short of shoulder length, with sidelocks that frame her face and fall a little past her chin. Her bangs are short enough to keep them out of her light brown eyes, which are alight with self-assured confidence and cheerful enthusiasm for life. When viewed through soul perception, her soul is a slightly muted steel blue and its shape mirrors her hairstyle, with the same sidelocks in front, and also seems to constantly vibrate as if humming. It's worth noting that her eyes turn the same color as her soul when she activates certain soul-based abilities such as soul harmony and beatboxing, and that most of her soul-based techniques have the same coloration. Aria's choice in clothing is widely varied, and she doesn't believe in having set outfits for specific occasions. She likes to mix and match on the spot, picking combinations that feel appropriate to the situation at hand as she sees fit. Her standard school uniform consists of a sweater vest or blazer worn over a white short sleeved dress shirt, with either a necktie or a bow tie, and either a pleated skirt or a simple pair of slacks to complete the set. For her feet she will wear loafers or mary janes, and can be found in socks ranging in length from knee to thigh high. In casual situations she could choose to wear just about anything, including tops like t-shirts, hoodies, button-ups, polos, tank tops, or even just a sports bra on especially hot days. For bottoms she most commonly wears jeans or jean shorts, but also enjoys cargo shorts, skirts of varying lengths, or in rare cases slacks. Her footwear of choice is between sneakers, sandals, and boots, and she avoids high heels whenever possible. On occasion she will add headgear such as a baseball cap or cabbie hat to the mix. When embarking on a mission she will choose from any of the more practical options from her casual lineup. She will also add black fingerless gloves and a pair of black riding boots for her feet when going out into the field. History: Aria was born to one Michiko Hibiki, a single mother living in Shibayama, in the prefecture of Chiba just outside of Tokyo city proper. She never knew her father, and all her mother would ever tell her about him was that he was American and that it was he who gave her her name. In fact it was largely because of this name that she first took an interest in music, finding at an early age that she had a beautiful singing voice. With her mother's support, she began learning to play various instruments, and continued to train and develop her voice. By the time she was only eight years old she had begun uploading videos of her singing to YouTube and Nico Nico Douga, and was somewhat surprised that they attracted not only Japanese listeners, but even an American audience. After a few years enjoying her internet stardom, Aria's mother came to her and asked if singing professionally was something she would be interested in. It seemed an old friend of hers was a manager for the globally successful record company Harmonia, and was willing to take Aria under her wing as a new idol. Needless to say, the young Aria leaped at the chance. The very next day she was introduced to Hayato Kuramori, a well-renowned idol manager and her mother's childhood friend. Hayato put the young girl through two years of intensive idol training, including vocal lessons and training with multiple instruments from the best private tutors available, as well as lessons on how an idol is to behave both on and off stage. It was considerably more work than uploading videos to the internet had been, but with her mother's gentle encouragement and Hayato's firm discipline, she stayed the course and made her debut as an idol with a group of eight other girls at age twelve. Almost immediately Aria shot straight to the top of her group's popularity rankings, due to her gorgeous voice and commanding presence on stage. Soon she was singing the lead part in almost every song, and people were beginning to refer to the group as "Aria's Angels". This naturally lead to a bit of jealous backlash from her fellow band members, who treated her somewhat coldly when they weren't in the public eye. At around the same time, the young Aria was entering junior high school, where she was naturally enrolled into an all-girls high class private institution. While there was never any shortage of girls flocking to be her friends, it was usually either because they were fans or they wanted to leech off her popularity, leaving Aria feeling a bit disillusioned with other people her age. By her fourteenth birthday, Hayato came to Aria with a stunning piece of news. She had been dropped from the idol group she had spent the last two years singing with. Before she could freak out too badly however, her manager quickly added her second bit of news: Harmonia records had decided to sign her on as a solo artist. Never really having felt like part of the group with her former band mates, this news was nothing but good for the young idol, especially since Hayato had negotiated into the contract that she be allowed to write some of her own songs. At first the company was hesitant to produce her self-written music, only allowing one or two an album, if that. But when those one or two songs consistently hit the top of the charts whenever they were released, she was quickly allowed the freedom to write all her own music. Before long she was going on tours worldwide, her music attaining global popularity and acclaim, and she felt she was truly living the dream. And then one day, the Kishin Asura was released. Aria and her mother were on a flight en route to her next concert when the wave of madness that resulted hit them both. Seeing the panic that came over her mother's face, the then fifteen year old Aria asked what was wrong. It was then that Michiko revealed something to her daughter she had never told her before. Before she retired to Shibayama to raise her child in peace, she had been a respected meister of Shibusen, and had even forged a deathscythe in her time at Shinigami's school. When they landed she called up Shinigami and confirmed the situation with him, then came to Aria with tears in her eyes and said that she had to leave to go help with the situation. While Aria understood that it was important and respected her mother's desire to protect others, she couldn't help but feel like she was being abandoned by another parent, and begged her not to go. But Michiko insisted that she had to, and promised Aria that once the situation was resolved she would come back and things could return to normal. Aria saw her mother off at the airport that day, a heavy feeling in her heart telling her it would be the last time she would ever see her. Only one month later, this suspicion was confirmed. She received a message from Shibusen saying that her mother had fallen bravely in battle with a powerful kishin egg, and died defending innocent lives. Unable to process this horrifying news, she broke down and locked herself away in her home for several long weeks, refusing to see or speak to anyone besides her manager, who did his best to console the young girl in spite of his own grief. When the day of the funeral finally arrived, Aria was surprised to see all of the members of her former band there to pay their respects and offer their condolences to her. But rather than the forced commiseration for the sake of the cameras the somewhat jaded Aria had expected, their genuine displays of empathy and sorrow helped her to realize that there were still people in the world who truly cared for her, and started her on the path to recovering from the depression she had fallen into. She still chose, with her manager's blessing, to take some time off from the public scene, and the record company announced the she would be taking a brief sabbatical to fully recover from her loss. However, what Aria had in mind was anything but brief. Learning that her mother was a meister of Shibusen had inspired the young idol, knowing that her mother was such a hero. And her subsequent death made her all the more interested in following in her footsteps, though whether it was out of a desire to protect others or seek vengeance even she couldn't say for certain. Regardless, against her manager's strenuous objections, Aria enrolled in Shibusen's NOT class, much to the surprise of her fans. However, to her own surprise, the general public response was one of support, though naturally concerns for her safety were raised by both the record company and Hayato himself. But Aria was stubborn, and dedicated herself to her meister training with the same dedication she had approached her idol training with so many years ago. Before long it was discovered that Aria had a unique soul type known as a harmonic soul, thus explaining her natural affinity for music. In NOT, she learned to focus her already keen hearing into a form of soul perception. A little more than a year after she enrolled in Shibusen, she had graduated to the EAT class, now sixteen years of age. She began to go on missions, and met a number of friends and allies, such as Ryou D'Arven and Den Ekigane. She also wielded a number of different weapon partners on these missions, but with her ability to wield almost any weapon partner, she never really found herself wanting to permanently partner with one weapon. Despite her inability to find a permanent partner, she has found no shortage of sparring partners and mentors. The two-star meisters Sigil Nathaniel and Ryou D'Arven were particularly helpful in her training. Between her experiences in the field and her training with her friends and seniors, she began to develop even more powerful techniques from her harmonic soul. With the help of Den she learned to improve her resonance rate with her singing. Sigil provided combat training, and gave her some tips that allowed her to hone her soul perception into a lie detector. Ryou in particular had some crazy ideas that proved the foundation for a movement technique she called dubstep and the offensive beatboxing. Finally, combining all of her training and months of experimentation, Aria began to develop her finishing move, which she dubbed soul cacophony. Personality: As one might expect from someone who has been in the public eye for over half her life, Aria is very used to and quite fond of being the center of attention. What one might not expect of a pop idol however, is that off the stage and out of the spotlight, she can actually be rather shy around her peers. This stems largely from her less than stellar interactions with her fellow idols and even classmates, leaving her a bit reticent to put herself out there in social situations. So long as she is the pop singer up on a stage or shaking hands with and signing autographs for her fans she has no trouble addressing huge crowds of people with a smile on her face. But scale that crowd down to a group of students just hanging around like ordinary people and she shrinks back into a slightly more timid and at times even awkward persona. However once she has grown comfortable around a person she will quickly return to her usual gregarious self, and anyone who manages to befriend her will have found a loyal friend for life. Ever since she lost her mother, the person she was the closest to her entire life, she has made it a point never to take those close to her for granted. She would do just about anything to help out a friend in need, and will always take the time to try and cheer her comrades up if they're feeling down. Though this can sometimes come across as a bit overbearing, and she may be offended if she feels as though others aren't paying the same attention to her. Again due to her early introduction to stardom, Aria is quite spoiled, and is used to getting everything she wants when she wants it. As she has grown older and more mature, she has come to understand that life doesn't always work that way, but that hasn't stopped her from wanting it to. Even in her schooling she expected to always receive top marks in her classes with minimal effort. Though in all fairness this was also due to the fact that she often did due to her ability to learn and understand new concepts quickly and apply them with seemingly no real effort. Her training in Shibusen, on the other hand, came anything but naturally to her, and forced her to work harder than she ever had before in her life. She was only able to overcome this challenge through her supreme stubbornness which refused to let her admit defeat. She has a fierce competitive side that drives her to come in first place, whether it be in the idol popularity rankings, or exam grades, or a life and death battle. She sees every challenge placed before her as an opportunity to push her limits and improve herself, and absolutely hates it when others take it easy on her, whether because she's famous or because she's a girl or just because they don't think she can handle it. And with her somewhat short temper, those who do get on her bad side in this way or others will often find themselves on the receiving end of a great deal of passive-aggressive retaliation, or sometimes just straight up aggressive, even violent retaliation if the offense is great enough in her mind. Aria is somewhat of a capricious individual, prone to sudden changes in mood from one moment to the next. While this is due in part to her somewhat self-centered outlook, there is another large contributing factor of which she was unaware for most of her life. Having been born with a sort of innate form of soul perception, Aria has always been unusually affected by the emotional states of those around her. Thus, if she is around people who are cheerful and upbeat, she will be as well. However if someone is angry, especially at her, she will often meet their anger with her own. Similarly, if someone is feeling down, Aria might feel herself being compelled to commiserate with them and have her own mood dragged down by theirs. However the flip side of this effect, which Aria has only recently begun to discover, is that she can in turn influence the attitudes of those around her to a degree. This is most noticeable when she sings, as music already has a powerful influence over human emotions, and with her harmonic soul, songs that she sings can resonate not just with the listener's mind, but with their soul as well. Learning that she held such powers dormant inside her was a thrill to Aria, who had always idolized the meisters and weapons of Shibusen, seeing them as heroes protecting the world from evil. When she was presented with the opportunity to become one of those heroes, she was more than eager to leap at the chance, and while she maintains a healthy respect for the danger that being a meister involves, she still looks forward to each mission as a new challenge for her to overcome. In addition, she loathes kishin eggs, and considers them more monsters than humans. Compared to her absolute hatred of kishin eggs, she has no real strong opinion of witches or golem technicians or other such fringe groups, treating them as individuals the way she would any normal human. Abilities: Technique Name: Harmonic Soul Effects/Description: Aria's soul has a natural affinity to sound and harmonics, hence her innate mastery of music and superior hearing. In addition to her ability to easily pick up new instruments and create music from scratch, her unique soul provides her with a nearly inhuman vocal range, allowing her to produce any tone and pitch she needs at will. This also allows her to impersonate voices near flawlessly, and she can even throw her voice to a limited extent should she need to mislead someone. Additionally, her super human hearing can pick out and identify individual sounds even within a cacophony of other noises. When focused properly, she can even hear a human's heartbeat from as far as ten meters away. Unfortunately, this incredible hearing cannot be turned off, so unexpectedly loud noises can easily rattle her, or even cause physical pain in extreme cases. Technique Name: Soul Perception – The Soul's Beat Effects/Description: Aria can hear the sound produced by human souls, commonly referred to as soul wavelength. The sound produced by a person's soul is as unique as the person himself, meaning that she can easily identify anyone whose soul she has heard before using this technique. In addition, she can hear minute fluctuations in a person's wavelength that can give her clues to that person's emotional state. With training, she has been able to refine this aspect of the technique to act as a lie detector, allowing her to hear the off beats in a person's soul when he attempts to lie. However, witches using soul protect will sound just like normal innocent souls to her. The maximum range of this technique, given the time to properly focus with few or no obstructions, is around two hundred meters. When used unfocused, its effective range is closer to ten meters. However, much like her enhanced natural hearing, her soul perception cannot be turned off, only tuned out. This can cause confusion in her readings if she is not focusing intently on just one person, such as misinterpreting an individual's mood or failing to locate their soul in a large crowd of others. Technique Name: Soul Harmony Effects/Description: When wielding a weapon partner in battle, Aria can use this ability to improve their resonance rate. To achieve this, she sings a song within the soul space shared between herself and her partner, giving their souls a common rhythm to latch onto. While obtaining a full soul resonance using this technique alone is impossible, the boost in resonance rate can be dramatic. Average resonance rates can be improved to good, good resonances can be made excellent, and even poor resonance can be pulled up to a decent level. However, a completely incompatible partner (such as those who burn her hands or are too heavy to lift) cannot be made compatible, even with this ability. This unique property of her soul also manifests in her ability to influence the moods of those around her slightly, especially through her singing. This influence is far from overriding, but it can help to improve the mood of someone who is feeling down, or provide the spark to incite a person to anger via a subtle undercurrent in their soul wavelength. Technique Name: Dubstep Effects/Description: This technique was devised to improve Aria's mobility on the battlefield, allowing her quick bursts of speed by releasing sound waves from the heel of her foot. These waves, when angled properly, can propel her in a straight line in any direction. Using a single dubstep, she can travel approximately ten meters in about one second, assuming a solid surface to push off of. When used in midair or against a soft surface, this distance is closer to five meters. In addition, this technique can be used offensively, allowing her to push an opponent back up to five meters, though the damage caused would be roughly equivalent to being kicked by her normally. The technique was named after the low pitched sound made when it is used, similar to a bass drop in dubstep music. Sonia can use five dubsteps per page in a thread. Technique Name: Beatboxing Effects/Description: Aria has learned how to improve the damage caused by her physical attacks by releasing sound waves into her target's body at the moment of impact. These sound waves reverberate around inside the opponent's body for brief moment, causing a dull aching pain and potentially causing minor internal damage with repeated strikes. Roughly speaking, this ability improves the damage of her attacks approximately 20%. This is a persistent effect, and can be activated or deactivated at will. When Sonia strikes an opponent with this ability active, it produces sounds of varying pitch, that when heard in rapid succession sound like a musical beat. Technique Name: Soul Cacophony Effects/Description: To perform this attack, Aria must first gather an immense concentration of sound waves into one hand, which will begin to visibly vibrate and give off a high pitched squeal as a result. This process takes about three seconds, and she must remain still and focused during the charging time. Once “charged,” her hand can contain the sound waves for a maximum of ten seconds before they must be released, either into her opponent's body or harmlessly into the air. If her attack does hit, the powerful sound waves will violently reverberate within the target's body, causing moderate to severe internal damage and causing minor muscle spasms that lock the victim in place for the duration, approximately one second. When soul harmony is active, Aria can use this technique in conjunction with the weapon she is resonating with, releasing the sound waves through her partner's weapon form instead. This ability can be used five times per thread, and has a two post cool down between attempts, successful or otherwise. After all five uses are up, beatboxing and dubstep also become unusable for the remainder of the thread. Combat Style: Aria has a very unpredictable and acrobatic fighting style, preferring not to stay in one place for any longer than necessary and always keeping the opponent guessing at what she'll do next. Her technique is an amalgamation of numerous martial arts she has learned both in training at Shibusen and in the self-defense courses from her idol days. She even incorporates the acrobatic maneuvering practiced in freerunning, giving her an unparalleled mastery of her environment that allows her to stay one step ahead of her opponents. As such, she tends to prefer dodging to blocking, and likes to tire her enemy out with evasive maneuvers until she can swoop in for the decisive blow. She is a formidable adversary to have, hitting with the force of a championship lightweight boxer with reflexes sharp enough to snatch an arrow out of the air and a keen tactical mind that keeps her aware of the entirety of the battlefield at all times. She is more than capable of taking on a reasonably large group of ordinary thugs even without a weapon, and can hold her own against the average kishin egg unarmed or with a mundane weapon. When wielding a demon weapon partner, even a small group of kishin eggs would be hard pressed to take her down. She is a quick learner, and can pick up and learn new types of weapons quickly and easily, though true mastery would of course take time and dedication to achieve. Miscellaneous Information: Aria is fluent in both Japanese and English, and speaks both languages clearly with no particular accent to obscure her meaning. Despite liking to be seen as strong and tough, she hates insects and spiders with a passion, and will often ask others to dispose of them if they're too large or grotesque for her to deal with.
