Clothing and description: Sonia has a fairly athletic build as a result of her Shibusen training and experience, being fairly thin but sturdy. Her muscles are surprisingly well developed, though not enough to be clearly visible, allowing her to maintain the slim and lithe figure she had before becoming a meister. She stands at around 5'5'', and her skin is a bit pale, clearly showing her Japanese ancestry. She keeps her black hair fairly short, being about an inch or two higher than shoulder length, and allows it to remain a bit messy, giving it its spiky appearance. Her bangs are typically brushed to the side to keep them out of her emerald green eyes. Her bust is a low to mid B cup, though this is not always obvious due to her tendency towards loose fitting clothing.

Her wardrobe is wide and varied, by nature of her being rich. However, most all of her clothing includes one or more of her favorite colors, which include pink, yellow, white, and black. In addition, most of her clothes have her symbol, a yellow musical note, stitched into them somewhere. Her most common casual attire consists of a tank top or t-shirt with jeans or a skirt, and sometimes a hoodie or other jacket if the weather calls for it. Her school uniform is a simple one, consisting of a short sleeved, untucked dress shirt that is a little bit big for her with a pink skirt and necktie, the latter of which is worn very loosely around her neck. Under these she also wears black pantyhose and a black tank top. For missions she wears her trademark sleeveless pink dress, the skirt of which ends an inch or two above her knees, with a white tank top and white shorts underneath. She also wears black fingerless gloves and a black belt that hangs loosely around her waist, weighed down a bit by the yellow pouch on the right side she uses to carry useful items in. Lastly, she is rarely found without her black sunglasses, which typically take up residence on top of her head when not in use, and the black choker collar that adorns her neck.

History: Sonia was raised by a single mother in a rural town on the east coast of the US. She never knew her father, but her mother spoke well of him, so she always assumed he had died before she was born. She was told, however, that it was her father who gave her the nickname that has stuck with her her entire life: “Song.” Her mother homeschooled her, teaching her Japanese as well as English, as she was originally from Japan and wanted her daughter to connect with her heritage. And connect she did, becoming very interested in Japanese culture and animation, which lead to an interest in video games and much more time spent indoors than is typically considered healthy. As a result, she didn't have a whole lot of friends growing up, but she never minded. She had her mother and her video games and, of course, the internet. In fact it was through the internet that the young girl would eventually be forced out into the real world. When she was about eleven years old she started uploading videos of her singing to YouTube, and she quickly started getting view counts in the millions.

One day, a man came to their door with an offer. It turned out that this man, one Samuel Hanekoma, was a talent scout for a prominent record company, and he had been impressed by what he had heard of young Sonia's singing voice on the internet. He said that, with some training and work, she could become a famous singer, and that she could make enough money to take care of herself and her mother for the rest of their lives. While her mother had never said anything, Sonia knew that she was having trouble making ends meet, and so accepted the offer over her mother's protests. She was worried that the music industry might not be the best place for her then twelve year old daughter, but Sonia convinced her to agree to the deal. After all, from her point of view, she'd get to make money doing something she loved: singing. And so, in short order, Sonia Hibiki (or “Song” to her fans) became a name known to and beloved by many, her mixture of Japanese and American music appealing to people around the world. With money flowing in in the millions, the young pop star was living a dream, a perfect life that she thought would last forever.

But sadly, nothing can truly last forever, as Sonia was about to discover. When she was fifteen, almost three years after she started singing, she received some terrible news from home whilst on the road. Her mother was in the hospital, dying of some kind of disease. She immediately got on a plane and flew to the hospital where her mother was, and was met with the news that her mother only had hours to live, and nothing the doctors had tried was working. She was told that nothing more could be done, and that she should say goodbye to her mother in what time they had left. She tried to get more doctors or better equipment flown in to help, but anything that could have helped would have arrived too late. In the end, Sonia could only watch, holding her mother's hand as she died. After the funeral, she canceled all of the concerts and events she had planned and locked herself in her house, refusing to answer the door for anyone. She spent weeks wandering the halls of the mansion-like house she had shared with her mother, reflecting on just how empty and lifeless it seemed now. Finally, she came to realize that her mother wouldn't have wanted her to stop living just because she had. Emerging from her depression, the singer returned to doing what she loved... but somehow it was no longer the same.

It wasn't long after before another life changing event visited the young girl. She was in the middle of a concert when all of a sudden a monstrous figure smashed through the wall and attacked her. Fortunately she was able to evade the initial attack, and the building's security forces were able to hold it back until a meister and weapon pair from Shibusen arrived on the scene to dispatch the creature. The meister explained to Sonia that she had been targeted because of her unusually strong soul, which the kishin egg they had been tracking had latched onto. He also offhandedly mentioned that her unique soul wavelength could make her a good meister if she enrolled in Shibusen. Seeing a chance to escape a life that had felt hollow since her mother's death, she eagerly took him up on his suggestion, against Hanekoma's strong objections. She entered into the NOT class and quickly began learning to utilize her dormant wavelength, starting with her soul perception and soul harmony abilities. By the time she had turned sixteen, she had graduated to the EAT class, and was on the hunt for a weapon partner.

While she had plenty of offers of partnership due to her preceding fame, she didn't really want to partner with a fan, since they tended to not want to let her put herself in danger, which would be a problem given she was supposed to be the meister. Finally she found a girl named Sabine Rothschild, who was most decidedly not a fan of hers. In fact she was of the opinion that the singer would pack up and leave Shibusen the first time things got too dangerous for her, and that she had no place at the school. However, she was having trouble finding a meister, due in no small part to her slightly abrasive personality, so she agreed to partner with Sonia on the premise that she wanted to be there to see Sonia fail in person. Despite the obvious lack of harmony between the two, they were able to work together thanks to Sonia's soul harmony technique, and their first mission was an unqualified success, prompting Shinigami to assign the two to another, more advanced one.

It was during this second mission together that Sabine's opinion of Sonia was changed forever. They were fighting a vicious kishin egg, and losing due to Sonia's unwillingness to aim to kill her opponent. Getting fed up, Sabine detransformed, claiming that she could do better on her own, and engaged the kishin egg alone. Unfortunately she wasn't used to fighting using her partial transformation, and left herself wide open to what could have been a killing blow. Seeing the attack coming, Sonia reacted quickly, pushing her unwilling partner out of the way and taking the hit herself. Taking advantage of the kishin egg's preoccupation, Sabine finished their opponent off before quickly rushing to the badly injured Sonia's side, apologizing for doubting the singer's courage as she rushed her to the hospital. After she got out of recovery, Sonia was met by a still very apologetic Sabine, who vowed to become a partner worthy of her. The two then began to work on developing a soul resonance, which eventually resulted in the technique sonicboom, though they never quite got it as far as a full resonance.

They went on several more successful missions together, meeting friends like Ryou D'Arven and Den Ekigane along the way, and quickly growing into a respected team, fast approaching two-star and deathscythe status. As their skills grew, Sonia began to learn how to project her wavelength in the form of sound waves, leading to the development of her dupstep and beatboxing techniques. Unfortunately, they let their success go to their head, and they started to get cocky. On one fateful mission, the pair had managed to defeat their opponent, but as usual Sonia was unwilling to deliver the killing blow, and Sabine offered to do it for her. Turning away from what would be a gruesome scene, Sonia heard the sound of metal piercing flesh as expected, but also a pained gasp from Sabine. Turning around quickly in horror, she saw that the kishin egg wasn't quite as defeated as it had looked, and it had run Sabine through with its spear-like claws. Crying out in rage, Sonia attacked the kishin egg with a fury, building up all the sound she could muster in one fist and striking her partner's killer with it, killing the kishin egg instantly and inventing her soul cacophony attack.

Sonia fell to her knees by Sabine's side, listening in despair to the girl's weakening heartbeat and realizing there was nothing she could do. With her last breathes, the weapon reassured Sonia that it wasn't her fault and that she was glad to have been able to be her partner. She made her meister promise not to give up because of this, and insisted that she really was a good meister, despite what she had said when they first met. Even so, the singer decided she needed a break from Shibusen, and went on a hiatus to get back to her music and release a new album dedicated to Sabine's memory. However she also kept up her meister training while she was away, refining soul cacophony further into a powerful finishing attack, and developing her syncopation technique to help her set up for the killing blow. When she finally did return to Shibusen, she still didn't feel quite ready to consider looking for a new weapon partner and going on missions again, so she volunteered to work as a NOT class teacher's assistant for a while.

It was there that she met a girl named Lucy Scarlet, whose unique wavelength abilities drew her attention. Seeing a bit of Sabine in the young weapon, Sonia decided to take the girl under her wing and start tutoring her personally. She helped her develop her wavelength abilities a bit, but more importantly she did her best to bolster the shy girl's confidence. When her charge finally graduated to the EAT class, Sonia decided it was time to get back to work as a Shibusen meister. It seemed that her friends had been busy in her absence, as old friends like Sigil and Ryou had been promoted to two-star while she was on hiatus. Determined not to be left behind, the singer resumed active duty, though she still has no interest in a new weapon partner, preferring to operate as a solo meister for now.

Personality: Because Sonia grew up without any close friends her age, she was fairly socially awkward for most of her life. Most of her experience with social interaction came from just her mother and online forums. Naturally, this changed dramatically once she became a famous singer, and she had to get used to a lot of social interaction very suddenly. She was able to get over her stage fright pretty quickly, but interacting with other people one on one was still a challenge to her, and she tended to try to avoid such situations. When she joined Shibusen, she began finding friends that she could really open up to and trust, even with her own life. As she grew more used to social interaction, her flippant and sarcastic sense of humor began to grow more pronounced, and she became more comfortable expressing herself in person rather than just online or through her music.

As a result of all the emotional twists and turns in her life, Sonia has grown fiercely loyal to and protective of the friends she makes. She would gladly lay down her own life for her close friends, and will do anything in her power to protect them no matter the cost to her. However, making close friends like that still doesn't quite come naturally to her, as she still has some remnants of the shyness that held her back when she was young. Singing on stage in front of crowds of thousands has broken out of her proverbial shell, and she is a very outgoing and friendly individual, but she still prefers the company of one or two close friends to a posse of acquaintances. In fact, much of Sonia's personality can be explained like a mask. When she's out in public and around people who expect her to be cheerful and upbeat, she doesn't disappoint. She takes great care to keep up her image while in the public eye. After all, no one wants their idol to be moping and depressed all the time. But behind closed doors, when no one's around, she sometimes reverts back to the shy little girl she was before becoming famous, who just misses her mommy.

Despite her occasional fits of depression, Sonia is for the most part a very cheerful individual who tries not to let things get her down too much. She does have a bit of a temper, perhaps because as a pop singer she's used to getting her way all the time, but she tries to keep it under control for the most part. However, if someone were to really anger her, you can bet that person would quickly find himself introduced rather rudely to her fist. In fact, for a singer, she's surprisingly violent sometimes, and greatly enjoys the thrill of combat. When in a battle, whether it's a real life or death struggle or just a sparring match, her competitive nature really comes to the surface and demands that she win, or at least puts on a good show if she loses. However, despite playing plenty of video games with blood and violence in them growing up, Sonia still can't stand the sight of blood and gore in real life. Fortunately, she has developed enough of a tolerance over her career to kill a clearly dangerous target. Whenever she finds herself starting to hesitate, she remembers the sight of her dying weapon partner in her arms, and harnesses that anger against her opponent.

Abilities:

Technique Name: Strong Soul – Harmonikinesis
Effects/Description: Sonia's soul has a natural affinity to sound and harmonics, hence her innate mastery of music and superior hearing. In addition to her ability to easily pick up new instruments and create music from scratch, her unique soul provides her with a nearly inhuman vocal range, allowing her to produce any tone and pitch she needs at will. Similarly, her super human hearing can pick out and identify individual sounds even within a cacophony of other noises. When focused properly, she can even hear a human's heartbeat, and vaguely judge that person's emotional state. Unfortunately, this incredible hearing cannot be turned off, so unexpectedly loud noises can easily rattle her, or even cause physical pain in extreme cases. Because her soul is unusually strong, it is considered to be worth roughly seven kishin egg souls.

Technique Name: Soul Perception
Effects/Description: By tapping into the soul frequency, Sonia can hear the sound produced by human souls, commonly referred to as soul wavelength. The sound produced by a person's soul is as unique as the person himself, meaning that she can easily identify anyone whose soul she has heard before using this technique. However, it is not precise enough to detect changes in mood or tell her about the person's potential abilities and such, and witches using soul protect will sound just like normal innocent souls. The maximum range of this technique, given the time to properly focus with few or no obstructions, is around two hundred meters. When used unfocused, its effective range is closer to ten meters.

Technique Name: Soul Harmony
Effects/Description: When wielding a weapon partner in battle, Sonia can use this ability to improve their resonance rate. To achieve this, she sings a song within the mental link between herself and her partner, giving their souls a common rhythm to latch onto. While obtaining a full soul resonance using this technique alone is impossible, the boost in resonance rate can be dramatic. Average resonance rates can be improved to good, good resonances can be made excellent, and even poor resonance can be pulled up to a decent level. However, a completely incompatible partner (IE, burning her hands or too heavy to lift) cannot be made compatible, even with this ability.

Technique Name: Sonicboom
Effects/Description: This ability was honed with Sonia's former weapon partner, and is usable only when she is wielding a bladed weapon that she has a high resonance level with. It requires a five second charging time for Sonia and her weapon to resonate and build up sound waves in the weapon's blade. The massed sound can then be released in the form of a unidirectional projectile wave by swinging the weapon. The wave is approximately two meters wide and less than a quarter of an inch thick, and is sharp enough to cut through steel. While it doesn't travel at the speed of sound as its name would imply, the wave is quite fast, traveling at around thirty miles per hour. The maximum range of this wave is about thirty meters. This ability can be used only twice per thread, and there is a five post cooldown period between uses.

Technique Name: Dubstep
Effects/Description: This technique was devised to improve Sonia's mobility on the battlefield, allowing her quick bursts of speed by releasing sound waves from the heel of her foot. These waves, when angled properly, can propel her in a straight line in any direction. Using a single dubstep, she can travel approximately three meters in about one second, assuming a solid surface to push off of. When used in midair or against a soft surface, this distance is closer to one meter. In addition, this technique can be used offensively, allowing her to push an opponent back one to three meters, though the damage caused would be roughly equivalent to being kicked by her normally. The technique was named after the low pitched sound made when it is used, similar to a bass drop in dubstep music. Sonia can use three dubsteps in three posts, meaning she can use all three in one post with a two post cooldown, or one per post with no cooldown, or anything in between.

Technique Name: Beatboxing
Effects/Description: Sonia has learned how to improve the damage caused by her physical attacks by releasing sound waves into her target's body at the moment of impact. These sound waves reverberate around inside the opponent's body for brief moment, causing a dull aching pain and potentially causing minor internal damage with repeated strikes. Roughly speaking, this ability improves the damage of her attacks approximately 20%. This is a persistent effect, and can be activated or deactivated at will. When Sonia strikes an opponent with this ability active, it produces sounds of varying pitch, that when heard in rapid succession sound like a musical beat.

Technique Name: Soul Cacophony
Effects/Description: To perform this attack, Sonia must first gather an immense concentration of sound waves into one hand, which will begin to visibly vibrate and give off a high pitched squeal as a result. This process takes about three seconds, and she must remain still and focused during the charging time. Once “charged,” her hand can contain the sound waves for a maximum of ten seconds before they must be released, either into her opponent's body or harmlessly into the air. If her attack does hit, the powerful sound waves will violently reverberate within the target's body, causing moderate to severe internal damage and causing minor muscle spasms that lock the victim in place for the duration, approximately one second. This ability can be used on three times per thread, and has a two post cool down between attempts, successful or otherwise. After all three uses are up, beatboxing and dubstep also become unusable for the remainder of the thread.

Technique Name: Syncopation
Effects/Description: This technique begins much the same as beatboxing, and can in fact be interspersed with normal beatboxing attacks. However, rather than causing damage like the sound waves produced by beatboxing, this sound wave lies dormant in the opponent's body for a maximum of three posts, after which it is rendered harmless. When activated by Sonia snapping her fingers, the wave reverberates in the victim's inner ear, disorienting them and effectively stunning them for a maximum of two seconds. This ability will not work on the same target more than twice in the same thread, and there is a three post cooldown starting from when the wave is triggered or it times out.

Combat Style: Sonia's combat style is as spontaneous as her personality, making it highly adaptable to the situation. One constant, however, is that she uses her acrobatic prowess to keep herself out of harm's way, and keep her opponent off balance. Because she's not the strongest student around, she uses gravity and momentum from her leaps and spins to add to the force of her attacks, rather than relying on brute force. She's a fast learner with most types of weapons, and her Soul Harmony ability allows her to become a competent combatant with nearly any partner. She likes to observe her opponent and identify his weaknesses, and is fairly skilled at coming up with tactics on the fly, allowing her to act quickly but intelligently in combat.

Miscellaneous Information: Sonia is a talented writer, and writes all her songs herself, as well as some fiction and poetry. She has a very flexible voice with a very wide range, making things like voice impersonations come easy to her. She can play a variety of string instruments, such as guitar, bass, violin, and cello, and even a little piano and drums. She also has a very poor sense of direction, causing her to get lost easily in unfamiliar locations.

Strengths:

  • Powerful and versatile wavelength abilities
  • Can work with a variety of weapon partners
  • Lots of combat experience, good tactician

Weaknesses:

  • Not the strongest or most durable physically
  • Sensitive hearing can be turned against her
  • Willing to sacrifice herself to save others
