Character: Carver Roland Glade Missions to hand in: MEGA Test (Hard) New Ability Name: Reach Out to the Truth (Soul Perception variant) Effects/Description: Roland has (sort of) improved his ability to manipulate his own soul, as well as his sensitivity to other's soul. The most obvious effect of his efforts is visible in his interactions with people. In addition to the tricks and such he picked up while playing games like Poker and his own research on human behavior in order to improve his game, Roland has developed an almost sixth sense when talking to people. This sense makes him more able to pick up on bluffs and lies, though it doesn't decisively tell him when there is a lie, it only gives Roland more information to base his decisions off of. Reach Out to the Truth can give a false reading, such as when a witch is using Soul Protect, or any other active control of a target's wavelength. ROttT isn't sensitive enough to pick up on the differences between different types of souls (human, witch, etc.), it only registers changes in what has been established as the default wavelength through observation of its most common state. This also means that it is less effective on people Roland has just met, as he hasn't established a starting point. This ability is line-of-sight, within hearing distance. However, it affects anyone currently meeting these conditions, so when multiple people are affected, it gives Roland mixed readings. For its maximum effectiveness, it must be used in a one-on-one, face-to-face situation, such as an interrogation or private conversation. Any other changes: Some minor edits to Roland's sheet requested: (I will put them in if approved, don't worry)

Tentatively approved. You may go forth and start training. The extra changes are a bit vague, I suggest having a separate post for the exact changes you want done to the profile to complement this list of changes. | |||

Roland let out a yawn as he stretched in his seat in Stein's lecture hall, the class having just ended. His classmates were already on their feet, heading out the door as they had begun to pack up early, Roland unable to as he was still furiously taking notes in the last few minutes. Lucky, the boy thought, the internal comment directed at a boy who glanced his way as he left, You guys get to leave earlier because you've been at it longer, while a dummy like me has to get extra tutoring. Gah, I feel like such a moron these days, I just don't understand how everyone else is able to keep up with their missions and classwork. At this rate, I'll be glad to just graduate, never mind become a Death Scythe. The farm boy gloomily double checked his notes for questions he'd written to ask later. Of course, there were several as usual. Ugh, why did I have to be born so stupid. Why couldn't I have been born smart like those kids who never study but ace their tests, it's not fair. Even working my ass off I doubt I'll ever catch up. His depression still looming over him, roland gathered his things and made his way to the front of the class, where Stein sat behind his desk as usual, today occupying himself with a dissected mole. "Professor Stein, sir," Roland said, standing promptly in front of the desk. "I have some questions about today's lecture as well." "Of course Roland," the strange teacher replied, "What things would you like to discuss today?" "Well, I'm not really sure I understand the basic concept behind Soul Perception and Soul Protect. Like, I get that everything has a soul, and that the different types of souls appear differently to people using Soul Perception. What I guess I don't really understand is how Soul Perception is even possible. Like, I can barely feel my own soul's wavelength, so the idea of somehow being able to interpret another's at a distance just baffles me." "Hmmmm..." Stein mussed. "It sounds to me like you have as much of an understanding of it as I can simply tell you. Some things like this simply have to be experienced to be understood." Roland sighed. "Oh, okay. Well, that was all I really wanted to as-" "Wait, Roland, you misunderstand me. I didn't mean that you are incapable of finding the answer to your question, in fact, I meant the opposite. I think if you were to try it out yourself, you may be surprised at what you find." "Huh?" Roland said, confused. "But how would I even begin to try? You said during the lesson that the most vivid form of Soul Perception is something you're born with, and that most people who learn to use it don't ever actually see the souls, but use their other senses to pick up on the wavelengths. If I wasn't born with it, how would I be able to do it?" Stein scratched his chin, bemused. "You're an interesting kid Roland," he chuckled, "You're so sure that you're unfit for the task that you give up before you try. Yet for some reason, you still keep at it, working hard despite being so sure you'll fail. Well, and you have a slight misunderstanding about my lecture. Yes, you may be born with it, like Joe Buttataki, which does allow for a more powerful Soul Perception that may be able to see through Soul Protect. However, someone like me who trained to use it can still see souls, we just can't see through Soul Protect or see as far. Also, yes, there are those who interpret Soul Perception through their other senses, it just depends on what's most sensitive. As far as how to learn it, you must be serious about it, have good concentration, and sensitive to your surroundings. Let me just give you a helpful little hint." The teacher leaned dangerously far back in his chair as he continued. "People's souls are just another aspect of themselves, like their personality, mannerisms, and emotions. Like those, they can be controlled if a person is paying close enough attention, and if they do it enough, it becomes habit. From what I know of you, you're an analytical person, always carefully judging others and adjusting yourself to them. Next time you're talking to someone, pay closer attention to your soul wavelength, and observe the changes that happen as you change your expression and mood. Then, after you've familiarized yourself with that, try focusing on the background noise in the wavelength. That background stuff is the mixture of the wavelengths of the people around you. Try observing it in a similar manner to the way you observed yours." With that, the teacher smiled, and kicked against his desk, suddenly propelling him and his spinning chair out the door, some how avoiding the threshold for once. Roland stood for a moment longer, confused, before he followed. ----------------------------- After dropping his school stuff back at his apartment, Roland went into the market district to go grocery shopping. Pay more attention to the wavelengths, huh, he thought, going back over his earlier conversation with Stein. Easy for him to say. He was probably enrolled here as soon as he could've been, so he wasn't stuck trying to play catch-up to people who are still moving forward. But still, maybe he has a point... Roland stopped, closing his eyes and shutting out the noise mentally, in order to try to feel out his wavelength. After a couple of seconds, he found it, and visualized it in his head as best he could. Keeping close attention to his visualization, Roland opened his eyes and looked around. To his surprise, he was able to keep track of it as it changed subtly, increasing its cycles when he saw an attractive girl go by, slowing back down and even a bit more when she was followed by a portly old woman. He next tried allowing himself to listen to the sounds around him, keeping note on his wavelength. He walked around the market district for about an hour while doing this, until he felt confident enough to approach a produce stall. Just as Stein had said, Roland noticed a change in the wavelength he was feeling when he began talking to the seller, though it didn't feel as if he were the source of the change. This must be that background noise he was talking about, Roland thought, relieved his efforts weren't all for naught. If I can just concentrate on that background noise, then maybe... shit! Roland cursed silently as his visualization stuttered before fading away. Roland finished his dealings with the seller before he closed his eyes to try to find his wavelength again, To his surprise, he found it much faster this time, and five minutes later, he was talking to another shopkeeper while trying to focus in on her wavelength. Come on, almost there, Roland silently steamed. Ah hah! Finally, Roland zero'd in on his feeling of the woman's wavelength. He continued to question her about prices, as well as her shop and the story behind it while observing her wavelength, paying extra attention to the similarities in the changes it made in similar situations as his own. Roland continued his practice for another 2 hours as he finished his shopping for the week. When he finally arrived back at home, he was exhausted, and quickly flopped on the couch in front of the TV after putting the groceries away. Boy, I'm beat, he thought, turning the TV and his new game console on. I made some progress today, but like Stein said, I'm gonna have to keep practicing for it to become more of a habit. At least I think I know what I'm doing, and I think I get what I was wondering earlier. Whatever, I'll go around observing wavelengths on my day off tomorrow, right now, I think I just need to play some video games. The boy let out another sigh, this one a mixture of tired satisfaction and relief. He felt as if a looming cloud had lifted, and he played into the wee hours of the morning without worry about his progress with his soul. Edited by WingManEXE, Dec 16 2013, 06:01 PM.

Updates to History: (Added on to the end of the current History) Since becoming enrolled, Roland has furthered what he has named his "poker mode," a mind set he enters when he wishes to analyze a situation. Using what knowledge he gained from situations like Poker and the few books he read in his free time growing up on psychology and sociology (in order to up his Poker game), he critically analyzes the mannerisms and expressions of the people around him. After many years of practice with this in his village, he is able to pick up on things like a person's tells and quirks, which allows him to better pick up on when they're lying or trying to hide something. This ability has been furthered with his newest skill, a form of Soul Perception called Reach Out to the Truth. While it is similar to Super Soul Perception in that it helps Roland pick up on when a person is lying, it isn't nearly as refined as Joe Buttataki's in that it is hard to focus it on one person, and he cannot "see" souls, which means he cannot currently differentiate between the souls of humans, witches, etc. Roland has also gone on several missions, as well as competed in the practical part of the MEGA Test. On a side note, he utterly failed the written portion, as he had just enrolled. Through Roland's experiences with a few of the various meisters of Shibusen, he has come to realize how he is most easily able to resonate with a meister. Roland must both respect and trust his meister, two things of which are hard to obtain.
(01) (02) (03) (04) (05) (06) (07) (08) (09) (10) (Just go ahead and tag this part onto Misc Info) As of this update, Roland is currently equipable with only Bullet. Both of the required conditions were met through his first meeting with her, combined with the struggle they went through together in the MEGA Test. Should a meister try to equip Roland without gaining his respect and trust, they will experience intense pain in the arm wielding him, as he struggles to adapt to their wavelength, throwing both wavelengths out of order. There are only two workarounds to this, either the meister must have extensive experience in manipulating their own wavelength, allowing them to accommodate Roland until he has adjusted to them, gaining the necessary conditions from observing their control of their wavelength, or when both Roland and the meister are in a critical situation, allowing for a brief period of adrenaline-fueled synchronization. Depending on how the meister handles the situation, the conditions for Roland to become equipable may be met. Roland's trust and respect don't have to be gained through meister activities, they may be gained through things like trust built through a critical common interest or shown to be reliable in helping with school work, or respect for the meister based on a high level of skill at a hobby or non-combat skill. I'm not sure where to put the info from the last three paragraphs since they don't seem to be particularly history oriented. I also don't understand what this code stuff is from either and what exactly you want me to do with it. |
