Okay, I went ahead and did two different versions.

First up is the version with the standard 501st logo:

And here's the version with an edited version of the 501st logo that better suits the Special Ops deatchment.

My only objection with using a Black Hole trooper is that it would not be fair to the other costumers. We are not just a detachment for black stormtroopers, you know? I just don't think it is the type of message I would like to send.

As for the use of the MEPD design, can someone contact the unit leader and ask, maybe our CO should do this?

Nice. All I'd suggest is that the Swift silent Relentless better match the actual font (or just be in Aurebesh). Perhaps an all black coin would be in order?

The coin options are only metallics I thought? I think silver would be a good choice.

Cujo, I recognize that we're not made up of just Blackhole troopers. But that is by far the largest group in the deatchment, as well as one of the most recognizable. And I was trying to remain as close as possible to the original 501st logo, while still making it "ours". And I didn't take the MEPD department design. I used theirs as a template, so that I had circles already made that were the same size. That's all.

COS_Vader, I could certainly try to find a font that was closer to what's used for "501st Special Ops"; however, I was using the closest font I could find to the smaller versions that were on the logo (I took them off). I could change them to Aurebesh and put the smaller ones in the logo back on. What did you mean by an all-black coin?

Instead of shiny silver, have it gunmetal black. It's just an idea, although the current trend is towards full color enamel coins.

I like your idea and concept a lot. It's very close to what I imagined as a Det coin. Let's stick with the regular 501st Legion side though - it's kind of "verboten" to mess with the logo according to the LMO, so let's keep it as is.

How about just have a plain cog on the other side with some aurebesh surrounding it saying 501st Special Operations?

Have the shield with the logo on the other side with the swift, silent, relentless, etc...

I don't suppose we'd be able to get permission to have the Blackhole trooper version done only as a Limited edition run of very few, for Legion and Deatchment leadership (and me) only? I think if they saw it, they might let us.

Big might, I know.

Not unless you'd be willing to head up the project and help fund it. Then technically you could do whatever you want for your own coin.

I just want to add, that we are not allowed to give out 501st merchandise to non-501st members. So unless you are a 501st member or within the last inch of obtaining membership, we can get in trouble for giving or selling 501st merchandise to non-members.

Me? Fund something?
I'd take a picture of my wallet, but I can't afford to have my camera repaired right now.

Also, I just sent an e-mail to Scott (501st Merch Officer) regarding me getting a couple of the coins even though I'm not official 501st for a while. However, I seem to remember something like this coming up a while back where even though the person who designed it was not in the 501st, they were still given a couple of whatever it was (it was a year or two ago, and I've got a bad memory) as a thank-you.

Trust me - if you design the final coin, you'll get a few. To this day, I still send merchandise from every run to Chuck Flynn for designing our shield, even though he's not a TX. Anyone generous enough to help with a great design darned well get the final product for free. ;)

I've done a lot of research on coin makers and there are some rip-off places out there. in the military world, it's normal for them to cost $4 to $7. I don't want any run to exceed $7 shipped worldwide. There is normally a set-up and die fee associated with these, so it can get a bit pricey, maybe $350-400 just to get the run started. But once they're set up, reorders are cheap.

The Det has some funds left over from the patch run to get us started financing a coin run. All we need is a final design (I believe we have one) and the remainder of the funding to make it happen. I suspect the first coin run will be 100, but if we ask people to pre-pay (which I really hate to do as I've seen unscrupulous folks take the money and run before), it might hit 200.

I'll need the artwork a bit bigger to send to manufacturer for proofing and scrape up the rest of the funds to make this happen for the Det. I'm not a rich guy at all, but I'm willing to take the initial hit to help us out - it just is a matter of time for me to get the money all set up.
