Okay, I have been play around a bit more. I looked at the Legion cards and understand about a spot to put your picture. I made anotther try this time a little more like a card.

First is my background ....

Posted Image

The idea behind the card was the lighting connects everything. The legion goes to the detachment you belong to, then the last one ends with the Garrison you are with. I thought it could help people understand the layout of things. ;)

The next one was made with a cutout for a picture to add.

And a blank verison.....

Now the only thing I am still trying to figureout is the back. Here is what I have so far.

I thought on the back would be a good place to have the helmet off (If that was wanted.).

I like these MUCH better than the first!  :D

Nice work there. I think we'll have to make these templates as dummy proof as possible to drag and drop elements (photos). Most folks don't have a great command of Photoshop, but if we can make them easy enough to modify, I think we'll have something great.

Thanks! I just had the idea last night after reading and thought how cool a card would be. Just started to mess around and well... surpirsed myself. :D

First the size I created these at 1300 X 1700 pixels. So, pleanty of room I think to play with. ( Of course the ones up above have been resized for you viewing pleasure. :D )

I will work on trying to make these dummy proof. I am still trying to figure out how to lock layers down, but to make sure people will be able to add there own photos.

I'll try to get a better picture of the Legion logo. That layer could be locked because it shouldn't change. Might be best to also lock the Spec Ops logl layer too. I'll see if I can get a better shot of my patch tomorrow.

Then the only two that need to be left open is the big window for the main picture and then one for the Garrison logo. I'll see what can be done. ;) :D

Any ideas on the back? The only thing I can thing of is leave it blank for the text and picture.

Like I said still learning photoshop so the layer locking thing might trip me up a bit.

If you want to use these that's fine with me. I'll be happy to help as much as possible. But if someone has something else that's okay too. Like I said just have a little fun. :D B)

I think I'd stick with what they have on the Legion cards, i.e.:

http://www.501st.com/cardlist.php?s=6

Name:
Legion ID#:
Garrison:
Contact:
Tours of Duty:
Arsenal:

Keep the other specialties (i.e. other costumes) out, as we're not trying to compete with the Legion card set. I might even say perhaps leave the 501st logo optional for those members who aren't Legion-approved yet but are members on the forum to be able to use the card template as well.

Also keep the fonts simple (not embossed) so most folks can edit and the style remains the same on all cards.

Sounds good.

I'll play with tomorrow and see how the back comes out. I'll redo the font, not a problem at all. And we can just leave the three circles as open layers. That way they could add anything they want to!

LMK if there is anything else I should look out for. I'll post these fixes tomorrow! :D :D

Here's the card i wanted to do a run of a 100 or so :)

Posted Image

What I did was take a proof from the existing 501st set and tried to make all the changes I would have liked to have seen done if I were making them myself. This includes the layout of the front, as well as a major facelift for the back area. I thought that these should look as sleek as possible - so I used a highly metalized style...kinda like those chase foil cards everyone loves.

The font isn't stock so it would have to be sent to whoever else was working on them, but thats not a problem.

That's awesome, Tim! One thing I don't like is that the Garrison logo covers part of the TX Det logo, but other than that, it looks damned good to me. We just have to be careful to make them "different" enough from the Legion set that it doesn't create any "branding" confusion.

I'm beginning to think that it might be really cool to actually do a full set of all our TX Det members (100 of your own personal cards and a mixed set containing one of everyone elses card) so we'd all have their cards too. But release the template for free (unlike the Legion) so folks that don't have the money to do full card sets on their own if they like.

I'm pretty sure I can get Steve Sansweet's LFL approval on this, and I know some Garrisons have put out their own sets of cards, so we won't be breaking any Legion rules as far as I'm aware. I'm certain he'll want a set too.

No matter what we do, per Legion rules, we'll offer these strictly at cost and have our DMO (Detachment Merchandising Officer) track down the best possible deal and report back to us. But folks will always have to option to print out their own for free using their own printer.

Thanks Kev - and yea, the spec ops badge shouldnt be covered - In fact, it should have more prominence if we really want it to be distinguishable from the regular 501st sets.

Something else I wanted to add would be card #'s on a corner somewhere.

We shoudl also look for a price closer to $0.65 a card - $65 per 100 cards +s/h... And I'm talking professional offset printing, full color front/back.

http://www.customsportscards.com/adultsportscards.htm is an example - and they have group rates!

Oops, I didn't see the link in your post - it's a little cheaper than what I found...

Well, SportsCardOnline.com does them for .66 cents a card for 105 cards ($66) or .56 cents a card for 200 ($112), so it sounds like we can get them done on a real commercial press and die cut on real trading card cardstock, just like the Legion does.

Their prices are here: http://www.sportscardonline.com/index-eDesign.htm

They have 3 day turnaround on orders uploaded via web.

Here is a few fixes on the front of the card.

Posted Image

Now here is the back. Still not happy with it at all. :(

Posted Image

The back is still a long ways away. I might have to scrap the whole thing and try again. Might be best to go for a darker color background. If I get time I'm going to try again.

I really like the front. But it my be to busy for some people. :D

lookin good man, the breakdown of info on the back is nicer now - I have a suggestion though:

You said it looks "busy" but I think it looks fine - you just might wnat to trim the range of colors in the background from 4 to 1or2...think if it was all silver, it would become more "tech" and less "rainbow"

Remember that the background or border shouldn't be taking attention away from the central photograph!

txshifty, I took your idea about looking more metal and here is what I came up with! :D

And here is the back...

LMK what you think. I leave late this afternoon for L.A. so I won't be online for a week. So, I might not get to fix anything before I leave. Just to let everyone know. ;)

But yes this looks MUCH better. Clean lines and not as "busy". :D
The side font I am still thinking about changing. Not happy with it. The fonts overall I want to work on again. Needs something better, IMO. :D

Anyone else have a design in mind? Submit yours to this thread.

I'd like to see 3-5 potential designs for folks to vote upon. I'll leave this thread open for two more weeks, then close it for a membership vote.
