Regular readers will know well my feelings on the disparity between the original version of the Storm Commando, and the black Scout version that is so popular these days. And I know several of you have expressed interest in doing the original version if there were any kits available for the hard pieces. Before the end of the year, I hope to be able to provide the unique pieces to make Mike Vilardi's original creation. I am also working in conjunction with MLC to create the modified Scout helmet that Vilardi's Commando wore. Part of the cost is fabrication of moulds, part is materials, and part is labour (I'm cheap -- MLC less so *heh*). In order to recoup the cost of creating the moulds and forming bucks, that cost gets broken up and apportioned into the asking price of the final piece. The more potential interest (and thus the more pieces are likely to sell), the smaller those portions can be. I'm going to be making four or five sets for my own use (one for me, the rest for close friends), and am willing to eat some of the development costs because of that. The rest depends on you guys. I'm hoping there's enough interest to warrant a production run large enough to keep the final price as low as possible. Please let me know if you want the armour, the helmet, or both, and I'll start the list. ![]() 21 May UPDATE 01. Gee2 02. Arakus 03. tavrikgannon 04. VaderDave 05. crazas 06. zollida 07. Grimreaper 08. wolf 09. Wolfman 10. izzi 11. TB-2945 Update 21 May 2010: Raw sculpts for the chest and back and cod are roughed out of the pink foam, but the pink foam doesn't photograph well. *heh* When I get it shaved down further and coated, then we'll see. After working on an MLC helmet for Jen's Scout, I've become familiar with its many fine qualities and its few flaws. Most notably that it's still undersized compared to the original helmet. This is fine for people of shorter stature (~5'8" and below), but since I want to have something that can -- if desired -- incorporate the suspension used in the original prop... and because I don't want to look like a pinhead (I'm 6'1"), I also have very roughly blocked out a full-scale SC helmet sculpt that will be rotocast along with the armour. This is not to knock the MLC helmet. I'll still be getting another to top off Jen's Shadow Scout, since it fits her nicely. Things have also slowed waay down since late last year, as getting ready for -- and then starting -- school has made almost all of my free time go poof. The good news is that it's an inensive and immersive course and finished in December. The better news is I'm starting to be less overwhelmed by it and am finding the odd hour here and there to work downstairs once more. However, I'm probably going to be focussing on my Mandalorian stuff through the summer. I may also have found someone local to me who can do the belt, holsters, and hang straps. I'll keep y'all posted on that, too. The interest list is not to fill a minimum run size. I will be making at least two full suits, if only for myself and a friend. But the more I can do, the more I can spread the cost of making the moulds out. I'd like to ask for a fresh round, based on what I've said here, of interested parties to let me know if they want specific pieces, full suits, or somewhere in between. And if anyone wants out, that's fine, too. I still don't have a price quote. Sorry. But I do expect the full suit, including helmet, to run somewhere between $700 and $1,200 -- using the rough costs of the lighter Scout and heavier Clone/Stormtroopers for comparison. I'll do everything I can to keep costs down without sacrificing quality. --Jonah Edited by Peregrinus, May 21 2010, 07:21 PM.

I'd be very interested in a set. I was contemplating buying the black scout armor in a few months. I've already started work on the unique pieces, namely the vambraces, shins, thighs, hand and foot armor. It isnt going well and I may have to cut my losses and turn to the costuming experts. Any idea on potential costs? I know a trimmed set of the black biker scout armor goes for around $700 including helmet. |

Not yet. That depends in part on how much interest there is. The more I'm able to break up the cost for the helmet mould, the lower the cost for each individual helmet will be. The rest of the armour will depend on cost of plastic and shipping more than anything else. I won't charge much for the time I spend pulling and cutting the pieces. I think I'll be able to get everything but the greaves able to be pulled from four sheets of ABS. The greaves I'm still working on. I'm probably going to have ot take a page from the Clonetroopers and their "seamless" techniques. I may even use self-skinning rubber anchored to a rigid shinplate. Still working out that one. The rest is easy -- just needs to be sculpted and moulded and cast. I'm also consulting with Mike Vilardi to gain insights into the hard to discern features. --Jonah |

Could you maybe ask out fearless leader if he wants a set? He expressed interest a while ago. Don't know if he still is. --Jonah |

I know I haven't updated in a bit. I was waiting to see if anyone else wanted in. The more interested parties, the cheaper the helmets will end up being. Won't affect the price point for the armour, though. I'm making that for myself, and pulling extras for anyone else who's interested. It was always going to come down to time and materials for the neck-down stuff.
But since there's activity in this section, I responded ot that other thread and figured I might as well post a progress update. I've sculpted and moulded the thighs, handplates, and sabattons. That took about a day. *heh* Haven't cast the forming bucks yet, though. Working on the biceps at the moment. --Jonah |

I did reply to you, but somehow it didn't show up. I'm 6'4" tall. If it'd fit without me looking like a goof, I'd be in, depending on price. Kev |
