First off I don't like the decals. I would like to take my aluminum or silver paint and hand paint the decals. Second, the cheek and rear decals look like grills. Could I cut, what the black lines on the decal would be, out and back with the same mesh for the frown. This was fans could be installed and get real airflow going! Finally (for now) I found some tactical black leather gloves. They look like nomex but have gloss black leather grips stragegically placed for shooting. These would be great on a TX or TK. Thanks a Lot! Any more ideas I have I'll post too! |

1- Those should be gray, not silver, if you want to paint this is not a problem, but stay with gray. 2- I saw troopers cuting of ALL the gray area and using mesh, BUT this is not the way the TK are seen in the movies, nor the TX in the comics, so, my advise is not to cut your helmet. (BTW you are 100% right, the ariflow will be increased by using this mod) 3- Gloves should be plain black, no buckles, no stripes, no fancy stuff. Hope it helps |

You can hand paint the decals - it is canon. Just do it really carefully so it replicates the decals perfectly. Paint must be grey, not silver. I think you could get away with cutting the black lines on the indents as long as it was backed with black mesh (fold it over 2 or 3 times so you can never see flesh undernieth). But make sure you have an ultra steady hand or it may not pass the LMO or your GML. You could probably get away with the tactical gloves, but I'd need to see them first. Kev |

Great and thanks for the tips! I have Aluminum and Gunship Grey paint from Model Masters. If anyone knows of something better I'll go get that. I think someday I'll make a fun TX helmet for display with silver replacing grey similar to the lenses. I may machine some metal pieces and have "true" grills. |

Try this. #005 Gloss Dark Ad Grey (for the traps, tears, teeth, and ear greeblies) and #015 Gloss Midnight Blue (for the tube stripes). There are good painting tutorials over at the FISD. Here's one of them. --Jonah |

If you try and cut the back vents out, let us know how it goes. I have heard of people doing this, but it seems like it would be a major pain and easy to make mistakes. |

I'll be sure to keep people updated. Tonight I'll file out the frown. Where can you buy Humbrol paint, or must it be ordered online. I really hope I can find it locally, this is a major test of patience, these projects I have

It's a European-made paint, so it's not widely carried in the U.S. Online is easiest, and it only costs a couple bucks. That company is fast, probably faster than trying to find someplace nearby that carries it in stock. Best bet would be if you have a large-ish independent model/hobby railroad store in your area. I don't mean any offense by this, so I hope none is taken, but I buy so much so often online I get brought up short in complete shock when someone seems to not want to. --Jonah |

I don't like buying some things online because while the price may be cheaper, shipping must be paid and you have to wait for the item. You also can't inspect the item firsthand. I know that paint doesn't really need inspected but there is still the wait |

By the way, how does this Humbrol Dark Ad Grey look on a TX bucket? I'm concerned about it not having the right contrast from the black that it does from the white on a TK. There probably isn't the sheen which I've seen so much. I'm going ahead and ordering some but be sure to let me know. Questions aside, I will make a TX bucket with silver ornaments as a display piece and I'll let everyone know what that looks like once I get to that project. |

Humbrol stuff is on the way, here is a pic of what I have on hand. This is dark gull grey which is almost an exact match to the decals.![]() Here is a sample of the greys I happened to have. Left to right, Dark Gull Grey, Aluminum, Gunship Grey, and Silver Argent. ![]() This stuff is really hard to take a pic of! Armor is all glossy and when the flash is on it looks matte, without flash the pics are all blurry. I'll figure something out though! |

The Humbrol grey is just a titch darker than Testors Dark Gull Grey. Thanks to all the models I've built over the years, I keep a stable of about 20 shades and makes of grey. It contrasts with the black quite nicely, and if you read that tutorial and look at the accompanying pictures, you'll see how glossy it is when applied correctly. Most people brush it on, as with the original props. I airbrush, because I'm a perfectionist and contrary by nature. ![]() I've never gotten burned buying stuff online. I have a tendancy against impulse buys -- in any arena -- and research the bejeezus out of something before I plunk down money for it. SO far, I've never bought something and had it not be what I expected. Especially around this crowd, where if fifteen people all recommend the same thing from the same source, you can feel pretty safe. I understand about the shipping cost thing. Nothing for that, except to think of it as compared to the gas cost of driving somewhere to get it. And as for time, they're fast. The 4th of July will interfere, though. You should have it in about a week, probably.--Jonah |

Heh, I'm trying to get this done before a lan party but that was pretty unrealistic I suppose I'm starting to lean towards flat black teardrops and dome decals and only painting the frown the grey color. This could be a "field style" hemet. Then a helmet decked out with silver or aluminum could be a "ceremonial style" No one wants to be flashy in the field, but then again, you need to show reverence in the prescence of the Emperor, thus comes the need for two styles. I'll still cut out the vents if it is flat black anyway to show people, but only if my camera skills increase until then. I'm pretty sure the flat black passes 501st since many people do it but correct me if I'm wrong. I'm also assuming that window screen painted black and tripled over is the ideal way to screen the holes. Thanks for feedback friend and I'm still a-workin'! Edited by lostdude, Jul 2 2008, 11:24 AM.

Mine are all hand painted flat and satin black and it went thru no problem. They look like thier solid black but in certain light you will pick up the line detail. See below:![]() ![]() ![]() I used a grease splatter guard from the grocery store that I shot black for my mouth screen.

Nice approach, there. I use black panty-hose to back up the frown holes. ![]() Lostdude, I apologize. Humbrol #15 is for the blue ab buttons, not the tube stripes. For those, there is no exact match, but Humbrol's #221 Garter Blue is the closest in that range. For Testors, Ford Engine Light Blue is the best match I've seen so far, but I'm still comparing. The Ad Grey is right for the frown, traps, tears, and ears, though -- as well as the grey ab buttons. ![]() Whichever of those you plan to do in grey, anyway. ![]() --Jonah Edited by Peregrinus, Jul 3 2008, 01:48 AM.
