Just wanted to ensure everyone is aware of the rules in getting a new costume approved for the 501st Legion. This comes down via the LMO and was approved by the Legion Council. Our job as a Detachment is to assist our members in any way possible (research, suggestions, etc.) to streamline the process. What this does not state is the "unspoken 3 references" rule, so please be aware that three documented LFL-approved references must accompany any new costume approval.

In order to add a brand new character costume to our master CRL listing of costumes eligible for membership in the 501st Legion, please read and follow the policy below:

1. Any member/potential member possessing a completed costume for a definitive "bad guy" character not currently listed on the master CRL list on 501st.com needs to e-mail the LMO before an application for an unlisted character can be processed.

2. If the definitive "bad guy" character is from a Star Wars movie or TV series (live action or animated) then the LMO will present the brand new character along with one movie or TV series visual reference to the Legion Council for discussion and then voting.

3. If the definitive "bad guy" character is not from a Star Wars movie or TV series (live action or animated) then the member/potential member will need to work with the LMO to identify three separate licensed visual references for this proposed costume addition. Once the three separate licensed visual references are found, the LMO will present the brand new character along with the three separate visual references to the Legion Council for discussion and then voting.

4. If the Legion Council votes in favor of adding this costume to the CRL by majority vote, the new character will be added immediately by the LWM to the CRL listing on 501st.com and become an eligible costume for membership.

5. The LMO will notify the applicable detachment about the new costume addition as well as the original member/potential member that inquired about the costume addition.

6. Until a CRL is written by the applicable detachment and approved by the Legion Council for the brand new voted in costume, the LMO will provide an informational thread for the GML team to be aware of the new costume's details so that the GMLs will assess a local applicant's costume accurately according to licensed Lucasfilm published/produced visual source for the costume.

7. Once the CRL is written and submitted to the LMO and subsequently approved by the Legion Council, the new costume's standards will be published to 501st.com.

Approved, Legion Council, October 2008
