Ok, so here we go on the patent thing. Due to the recent, well, I guess it'll be seen as a confrontation, although it really isn't, between Ryada and I, I've noticed a rather large problem with the patent system. So, here goes my thoughts on that. The patent system is flawed, realistically anyway. The fact is that, even if one person on the forum is a master of something, that shouldn't mean that they're the only people who can teach that to someone else. In real life people have to discover things for themselves, or work out things. And, even if, say, one group of people work out something, that doesn't mean that another group can't work out the same thing without the first's help. For example, building rockets during the Cold War. Both the Soviets and the USA were competing to get to space. Now, the Soviet's won that race with Sputnik. However, just because they suddenly got to space didn't mean that the US had to completely give up and wait patiently while the Soviets slowly released their secrets. They went their own way and ended up kicking the Soviet's butt to the moon. Now, part of the goal of any RP is to be fairly realistic (while still keeping things fun, of course.) And the patent system you've got is kindof unrealistic, to the point of being more annoying than anything. Now, I can understand making a completely new thing only teachable by certain people, but Force Travel isn't new. It's canon, albiet ambiguously, from Polyhedron 104 (A Star Wars D6 RPG campaign whatever was in it.) A lightscythe isn't new either; it was first found (by me anyway) about a year ago on theforce.jaymach.com. Like I said, if someone makes up something completely and totally new, that can't be found anywhere else, I'm completely cool with making them the only people who can know it / teach it. But stuff that isn't new I have a problem with, especially when it's canon. So, those are my thoughts on the whole thing. Figured I'd throw that out there for ya'll to ponder and all. |

Good outlook, and I totally agree. Like you said, if it's cannon, it should not be able to be patented. But, also like you said, if you made it up yourself, something of your own creation, it's yours. |
