Major RP Change

Now, I know this is a big deal, and many will disagree, but I think it would be a step in the right direction for AKT's roleplaying.

Keep in mind, this rule is usually used on boards that use major plot points to advance the RP.

What I'm proposing is a new roleplay rule. A big one, but one I've seen on every other roleplay board I've been on, and they all have grown and prospered. There's pros and cons to this rule, but it shows growth in the sight.

Rule: Your character can only be in one place at one time.

Pros: In general, it seems to make boards flourish. It helps people concentrate on posting, and moves plots way faster than having side-rp's. It also enhances roleplay quality, not making players rush from thread to thread. It's easier to keep track of the roleplays you're in, and lets you focus more on the plot than roleplaying random events. Plus, things just generally make more sense. Ex. Bob starts RP1. He gets an item through RP2 and carries it into a post in the middle of RP1. I know it says in the rules not to do this, but I have seen it done more than once. It's also easier to figure out what's actually happening (which is sometimes a problem for me, reading through several different threads to get an idea what's going on.

Cons: If a player leaves in the middle of a thread, it kind of screws other over and they have to make due without them. It might also decrease activity if players are forced to leave a thread and start another, and not roleplay in two, either that or boosting plot with concentrated posts in one thread.

Now, I know a lot of people will hate me for thinking (and posting) this, but it seems like a really good step in the right direction. Of course, that's if we want to advance the plot, which, with the happenings of the Sith, at least, really makes things make more sense. This would also introduce the Plot Staff, a pinned idea from before, back into the RP.

So... there's my two cents. DISCUSS.

PS: I have seen this rule not only on the top RolePlay board on InvisionFree (which I recommend an affiliation with, since they are very active) and on many other, smaller ones, which Apollo Taren has been a port of on a few, at least.

ANOTHER IDEA:

We could have a different section for RP's that don't affect the main plot, instead of getting rid of them altogether.

I like.....ALL OF IT, but what if that thread is dead?

Tahts' the thing. With concentrated posts, it WON'T die, because the characters will have no where else to go in the plot, essentially the story altogether.

Ok ok but what if you start a thread and NOONE at all joins your topic?

Ok. I'll do my best to answer this.

But with a storeh!

On Dark Forest, the biggest roleplay site on InvisionFree, it's always the staff that start the threads, and that always continues through the plot. So people want to affect the plot, and their only means of doing that is by posting.

As for making your own... well, it will usually pertain to the plot anyway, so with a lot of staff, they all do different things for the players to decide which fork in the road to take... but they all end up at the same place.

But, if you make your own, you have either decided to forge your own path alone, or forge a path with others who will follow. But if you really want to start your own thread, and make it affect the plot, I recommend trying to become Plot Staff if they ever start it.

Ahh, good question. If the staff makes the plot/thread, it's for EVERYBODY, no questions asked.

I'm not the staff, so I have no clue. We'll have to see what others think about it, before anything comes into play.

Ekkoh, we used to have that rule, it didn't move the story along if someone was Rping to get something, and we just decided to remove it, it allows people to hang out with others more in an RP instead of just one thread.

Ive seen forums go to that style many times, its usually the main reason I leave boards. Roleplaying is usually having the abillity to create a character and then play them in any way you wish. Essentially giving you your own new person that can do anything within reason in an RP. When you place too many restrictions on that, then why bother Roleplaying in the first place? To be honest if AKT were to make that kind of change then me and mine would likely move on. Ive always advocated the "True" style of roleplay, and in the end it doesnt matter how much I might like a board, when the essence of the roleplay is removed ive got no real desire to stick around. AKT is fun for me, because I can do my little side stories, I dont plan on ever becoming a huge part of the plot. Star Wars is all about options, whats the point of making a neutral or job oriented character if you can only move teh story alone, most of our neutral guys are creating their own stories, outside the main parts of the plot. Sorry to say it, since im a big fan of AKT, but I would most likely move on to another less restrive board should that happen.

Here are my thoughts on this, as someone who has been on, and enjoyed, both kinds of boards.

It's a good idea for some reasons, and a bad idea for others, like most things. For this rule, however, a lot of it depends on the board and the type of roleplay one is in.

This restriction is a big one, and it works very well on boards where there aren't many other restrictions. For example, on the first true board I was ever a part of, where this rule was in effect (The World of Taloane, I think it's dead now...), one could have any powers they wanted at the start, any weapons, and so on. To get what they wanted they had to have a very good bio, of course, but the fact still remained that there were few restrictions on what one could have. In that way it meant that one could roleplay as what they wanted, with what they wanted, but could only be in one place. It makes sense with that board, because it had a way of limiting people with a lot of power in other ways. They also had few limits, if any, on the amount of characters you could have, which meant you could still RP in four or five different places, even though they were with different characters.

It has its benefits. Those you RP with you normally get closer to, and spend more time RPing with them. It makes it easier to keep playing. The plot didn't necessarily move faster, but it was a lot more about developing your character very thuroughly, and learning about them and how they would react with everything. You became one with your characters.

However, it also has quite a few downsides. Those come in to play when you already have a lot of limits. If you have to start out small, like you do on this board, it takes a LONG time to get anything, which is rather discouraging. That's the big one there, but it's a very big one. Another one, although not quite as meaningful, is if the board is very large (as in, if the RP covers a lot of IC space). Like that, it takes a long time to get from one place to another.

So, overall, the decision is up to everyone else. Personally, I'd say nay to it on this board. Excellent idea, yes, and I give Raduk (Or Ekkoh now ^_^ ) a thumbs up for suggesting it. It just wouldn't fit with a board like this without a lot of other changes.

(On a side note, ya, I'm coming back. I havn't done much, but I'm still here, and I plan on staying. If I ever do drop off again someone come and slap me into my senses.)

Instead of restricting characters to one RP alone until it's done (which makes sense but will make RP incredibly harsh, and people will start rushing to finish RPs instead of enjoying them), why don't we introduce the time-tested "Time Stamps" school of thought?

By that, I mean adding to the thread title a small indication of the day and approximate hour of the thread (for example, I'm currently at a thread on Mandaloria - the title would look something like " Mandalorian Iron (15th July, Early Morning) -- just choose what calendar type you prefer (I have no idea what is the official SW time counting method, so bear with me.

The idea is that this would allow people to keep track of what happens more easily (for example, in that thread in 15th July I get into a fight with Vexas and we declare inemity towards each other for ever. Imagine now that I'm involved with him in a RP with the time stamp of 14th July -- this means that in that RP I'm still friendly towards Vexas since the whole "B----slap Incident" hasn't occurred yet.)

Of course, while people still have very much the freedom to do whatever they want and participate in a ton of RPs at the same time, they will have a firmer grasp of the chronology of events and make it easier to sort feelings\emotions. They'll only have to be slightly careful not to be in two places in the same day (unless they're really close) and time of the day. It might be smarter to let a week or so between events times so you can squeeze others in between should the need arise.
