Viking Longhouse

Throughout the Norse lands, people lived in longhouses (langhús), which were typically 5 to 7 meters wide (16 to 23 feet) and anywhere from 15 to 75 meters long (50 to 250 feet), depending on the wealth and social position of the owner. In much of the Norse region, the longhouses were built around wooden frames on simple stone footings. Walls were constructed of planks, of logs, or of wattle and daub

Inside would be a long central fire that would never be allowed to go out. Benches along the walls would be used for seating and sleeping. A family area might be separated from the main room by a wooden screen or by a screen of cloth or animal skin

In the Viking homelands there were plenty of trees, so the walls of the houses were built of wood and the roofs were thatched with straw, reeds or wooden shingles.

Where there were not many trees, however, the walls were built from slabs of turf on a stone base with roofs made from thatch or turf.

Sometimes the grass in the turf was allowed to keep on growing on the roof as this helped to keep the house warm. Another method of house-building was wattle and daub. Upright posts were woven together with twigs and then daubed with thick mud to keep out the draughts.

A viking town might look like this with smaller houses built around a longhouse.
