I HAD AN IDEA. It was terrible, like most of mine. It is basically people becoming reality-warping psychic mage things who constantly spam dank memes and general internet trolling while really really high on this incredible new (literally magic) drug which allegedly promoted 'specialized brain growth' and more provably has been shown to cure many medical problems and went through clinical trials harmlessly and got approved as a general OTC cureall through the forces of the various ancient conspiracies, the drug at the center we'll call Memeticine, but has the nasty undetected side effect of causing said reality-warping psychic mage things due to the intervention of *outside forces* using it to mess with some undefined spiritual force. Magic drugs have been explored by everything from candy shops to [concept not translational] to *trip hammer obsessor*, but I'm bored so I'm stealing from Teo, and containment will be considerably less feasible if the appropriate switches are flipped to even try so technically it's a very very similar but faintly distinct idea. Besides memeticine, there are lots of other magic drugs beginning to break into reality that can be abused, but traditional drugs and other substances remain relevant and have documented detrimental side effects and are therefore more likely to only kill you as opposed to the entire local area. However, the rest of the world is a rather low-magic setting and everyone is attempting to find the original source of memeticine in order to get really really high and become an omnipotent god. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly clear reality is not as it seems and higher-magic worlds are sitting quietly behind barriers with troubles and pill supplies of their own. tl:dr the vast majority of memeticine Awakened, who simply needed memeticine to weaken the boundaries of reality for their creation to bloom. They don't need to be high to fuck up reality, but it makes them WAY more powerful and unpredictable, and any recreational drugs (especially hallucinogens) should be kept as far away from them as possible, or if you're playing one kept for later use in emergency situations to further tear open your...uh....*jams random words together*...astral meta-injective projection? Sure let's go with that yes why not. tl:dr people who can warp reality while totally sober and get super-OP when given drugs at the total expense of control and the shattered remains of sanity and self-restraint. Most Awakened are artists, megalomaniacs, certain kinds of clinically insane, or otherwise creative, mentally striking, and at times incomprehensible, and do not use abnormal drugs normally and all except a megalomaniac subconsciously furthering their own power to make their delusions true. Tempered, who have their...uhh... anti-editing barriers against meta-injection torn apart by memeticine, but lack the drive and ideas to just warp reality out the wazoo right then and there, and have to use other drugs to go all crazy-reality-warper haxkureiz. The Tempered can warp reality while totally sober, but this usually requires focus and a clear idea of what they are trying to do, neither of which most of them are naturally given to because of their tendency to have been drug abusers before memeticine (chain smokers, alcoholics, stoners, crackheads, other addicts, etc.). However, as mentioned before they can easily abuse other substances to grant the abnormal states of mind suited to furthering reality warping, usually by channeling the satiation of their dependency into something else. These guys want their thing and break reality in their short-lived victory high (or long-lived if it was full of psychoactive things). Unstable, who have way less control over their power than they want and memeticine accidentally triggered the development of their special powers...um...in a subconscious-controlled region on top of a subconscious that has serious problems with everything, yes let's go with that cheap explanation I totally did not just pull out of nowhere. The Unstable, as the name indicates, are unstable, and often have mental problems. Their unintended actions often massively warp the area around them. Their powers are almost totally out of control and their psyche isn't exactly in a preferable configuration at the best of times. Many of them crave depressants and suppressing groups (cults, other less than ethical religious groups, the silly kind of politician, people who shut down everything just by talking negatively, etc.) or beneficial things like therapy and proper medical attention to shut down their malformed calls to the outer signs. They actively avoid further mental manipulation besides what they desire and are absolutely flooded with internal censorship, but if you force them to intake mind-affecting compounds that are not calm-downs they will massively overreact and flood the surrounding area with their personal demons in a moment of weakness. Sensitives, who more or less had an everted copy/defend aetherside spiritual immune reaction to taking memeticine's effects as anything other than a general health supplement and basic panacea due to personality and are now nigh-impossible to manipulate through direct reality warping, at the cost of more restricted abilities. Besides a small palette of magical-girl-power-ranger-sburban-godtier-gem-etc.-like selection of powers for offensive purposes, they are more or less almost exclusively limited to shielding, healing, undoing, nullifying, repairing, restoring, bolstering, buffing, tanking, being immune to things, portfolio-centric power development, sometimes analysis, sometimes item generation, rarely manipulation other than counteractive kinds, and otherwise being the stabilizing Robert Joes of the memeticine-affected world and the default supporter class with fairly limited attack capabilities compared to everyone else, along with vastly more limited and weaker powers. The vast majority of Sensitives are people like idealized versions of psychiatrists, teachers, healthy-lifestyle-people, bookworms, general doctors, scientists, etc. Sensitives don't do recreational drugs and will usually resist any attempts to pressure them into it, but they will often gain the abilities of an Awakened or Tempered in addition to their Sensitive skillz, or if the event was too psychologically damaging and become an Unstable in a moment of weakness but with the ability to turn off the passive hellspawn field but no particular desire to until everything that messed them up is obliterated in a sea of mind-generated monstrosities with the Sensitive at the center killing the offending people in the relative eye of the storm. The vast majority of lesser-effect memeticine-affected are just weak Sensitives who collectively resist large reality-warping actions, hence why finding the source is necessary to remake the world in your desired images without bulldozing your foes and mind-enslaving your allies. Neutral of category, the average memeticine-affected is faintly aware that the source of the pills has limitless power, that each individual affected gains slightly more power per amount of memeticine they have consumed and much more from creativity and mental difference from general humanity, and tends to spout random thoughts (the ones of which that are not self-sourced mental banter or crowd-drawn memes tend to reveal the secret truths to getting ahead in the game) in a spree of wild reality warping after increasing in power and more controlled warping after that, and a decent understanding of what they're doing and 'how' they're doing it. They also gain the abilities of other memeticine-affected they interact excessively with (close befriending or fighting/killing) over time, accelerated by use of memes (as the title would hint), and eventually a high enough killcount/enemy count/friend count/number of allies/meme spam/etc. will make you more powerful than a loner who is just derping about uselessly and dumbly swarming innocents. This is very first draft and designing the mechanics (if any) is something I could use help with. In general, your job is to find other memeticine-affected, blow them up to avoid competition or team up to progress further, and ultimately determine the origin of the mysterious pills and figure out how to ascend to godhood from there. In the case of Awakened, you will have to outthink all the craziest scenarios that the other warpers are coming up with as that is the safest route to power. In the case of Tempered, you will have to manage your nagging addiction or healthily sacrifice it and delve into the realm of WTF for power instead to succeed. In the case of Unstable, you will have to either suppress, satiate, or work towards emotionally accepted terms with your problem to turn off your mind automatically generating monsters at you. In the case of Sensitives, you will have to use your power to defend yourself against everyone attacking you. Also, Mia is a fan of drugs and is by far the most horrendously overpowered physically present entity running around the setting, so if you hear anything about Mia Utopia or a giant quadruped drunk magic lady eating people while blowing up cities and throwing empty alcohol bottles at planetcracker velocities and people inexplicably celebrating it, run the hell away from that location and preferably get to another world entirely through the nearest gate structure, or enable a switch to throw the sudden activity of a reference into the fray to delay her. Thoughts and/or recommendations for making it sound remotely comprehensible? Edited by nedben, Aug 22 2015, 12:46 PM.
