I am quite a bit shook up by the deaths I have caused, but I manage to get myself to calm down. Slow breathing Sassy, just relax. I am hidden in the bushes when I suddenly hear a rustling in the bushes to my right. I fit a bolt to my crossbow, ready to fire it. Then I hear a familiar voice. "Sassy, verily is that thou?" I let out a deep sigh and return the bolt to its place. "Serpentina? Where did you come from?" Serpentina is a snake who has been kind to me since arriving in this dimension. I did mention I'm able to talk to snakes, right? "I hath been trailing thee, sister Sassy. Twas not the easiest path, but thy footsteps hath led thus far. Whither wilt thou go now?" I look up to Degrassi and point. "Up there, maybe." "Nay, sister, doth thou not see or hast thou lost thy vision? Between us and yon city crawl the most hostile infestation of humans and nonhumans I hath encountered. Observe the many fires." I look and see what she is talking about; amidst the sparse green of the trees, there are red splotches, a lot of them, and every one a fire. Either the entire area around the town is burning, or there are a whole lot of people up there. "Well, that's no good then. Could always try the river." "That route is no longer thine to take. Boats on the river, lots of them, they should be here by the morrow." "Oh, just great! So what now then? I either go back to that hillside, which is no place to be with the armies on the move, or I head into town. We can both see the problem with that. There must be thousands of them between here and the town." As she speaks, her sudden movements have attracted notice and an arrow narrowly misses her, shot by an arch from up on the cliffs. "Verily, Sassy, this land is not safe. Thou must take a safer route to the town." "Yes, but how?" "In my travels, I hath found a little-used path that runs from that hillside to the town. If thou takest it, thee should be under cover for most of the journey till thou reachest the safe haven of the town's protection." "Well, that sounds like a good idea. I do have a new friend who are waiting on the hills. I'll bring her here and you can show us the way." "Nay, sister, for verily I shalt go with thee. Thy new companion may not be trusting thy word alone and I wouldst rest easier knowing that thee wert safe." "Okay, I'll take all the help I can get right now. Let's try to find my friend. Keep your eyes open for trouble." Together, through the gathering darkness, we head off for the hills to find her. |
