The Very Quiet British Isles
Sir Thomas goes it alone

British Isles is not a small region. At 615 nations, it is the fifteenth largest in the world of Nationstates. In game, it boasts 36 embassies.

On forum, you will often find active users. It’s not hard to get in touch with the government, who are available by private message often throughout the day.

Despite all this, the British Isles forum is quiet. That quiet is discomforting and it’s noticeable for a region that’s so big.

British Isles was one of the first regions I called home. It seemed to be a solid choice but it didn’t take long to notice the inactivity problem.

When I took over as Deputy Culture Secretary, the absence of any sort of excitement about British culture was something I found striking.

As a citizen of a very active British region called United Kingdom, which boasts 148 nations, and is 48th in the world, I found the absence of cultural programs a tad worrying.

If British regions seem to have one advantage over any other, it’s that they have a great culture to fall back on, and a ready-made government model.

British Isles, of course, has its active forums. Parliament does debate legislation of the day but outside of the Commons, it’s not the MPs that are leading the activity.

I checked the most active users list for the day, 5 of the 10 most active users were citizens, and the region only squeezed out about 60 posts for the day while United Kingdom has 330.

Nowhere is the malaise more evident than in the military, which attempted to run a training mission today, only to find nobody showed up. Following that training mission, it seemed less of an education in military strength, and more of a routine border run.

I caught up with the Defence Minister, Sir Thomas, outside Parliament, who was still visibly shaken since he publically expressed ‘disappointment’ earlier today.

“In my honest opinion, the reason that no one came out for the mission today is that dedication to the British Isles is very low. The number of jobs and amount of time these jobs affect this. People have stuff to do in other regions and have nothing to do in this region, so when someone does come up, the just ignore it and expect someone else to do it. A way to fix this, create more jobs and stuff to do around the regions, once people have more than one connection in the region and is online during the time that these missions are taking place, they are more likely to come online. So simply, get people online somehow and concentrating on this region and they will show up to more and more stuff.”

I let him get on with his day.

I walked back into my hotel, which seemed, like British Isles, to be low activity. It’s not hard to imagine that these rooms were once packed with foreign dignitaries eagerly waiting to see the lion that was Britain. It’s hard to see British Isles today as a lion instead of a sloth.

If these rooms once housed foreign dignitaries, they now just house a Dixie Magazine reporter and a few hotel staff who sleep in the empty rooms.

British Isles has a progressive government in the Social Democratic Labour Party but that government seems to have little thunder. It’s not worth blaming anyone but it is worth saying what is the fact – the time has come for a change. Whether that change is in management style, or simply management, something must give.

I’ve not been here that long but it’s clear what the course of action was.

I’d begun to consider if it was time for British Isles to have a new party. If not just to give opposition, but to provide some hope, and a voice for the new citizens, who have been bearing the load of activity.

Most of all, it was time to end solo training missions.

I headed out of my room to try to find some more people to interview. Walking the streets of London, one of my crew saw something telling.

This is the picture he took and it’s a good way to close this article.
