Day #1: There isn't much to say about me now that the Zombies are here. No, no, I won't call them zombies . . . that reminds me too much of what they used to be. Zombies used to be like us - humans, living people. I don't want to think about that, that that could have been me - could still be me. Man, I hate thinking like this. It makes it so much harder to shoot them with my arrows, despite the fact that they are probably too far gone to be cured or saved; and despite the fact that shooting them saves my sorry hide from being eaten. Who am I? Tobias Mattheus. Just your average kid. Before the Shattering (what many of my friends had - had - called the zombie apocolypse before they died), I had been a normal college kid. Specialized in art, acting, theater production, and writing. Huh, not much use to a zombie hunter. NO! NOT ZOMBIES! Before I go insane, I am going to call these walking dead a different name . . . You might think I am totally stupid, but I will call them Orcs, based on JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings - at least them I don't have to remember too much that they were human. We were hit hard that first day, thirty days ago - was it really only one month ago? No idea why, but most of us in our guys' dormitory were uninfected. And armed with nothing but a few knives we were able to smuggle into school, a stupid french foil fencing sword (mine) and a small gun that one of the shadier kids had snuck past security. The first thing we heard was screaming. A guy screaming. Outside. We, the guys chilling in my room, ran over to the window and looked down three stories to the couple sitting in the grass who had been smooching just an hour ago. Poor guy. There was so much blood. And the horrible thing is, she looked up at us as she was eating his throat out. Her eyes were starting to cloud over, but they looked at us, focused on us. Tears were streaming down her bloodstained cheeks. There was still a part of her that remembered, that remembered who she was, who her boyfriend was, and what she was doing. She opened her mouth and screamed, her voice rattling us all, "KILL ME!" And across the lawn, more people were stumbling her way, having obviously heard the commotion. However, instead of taking charge of that girl and killing her, they started to help her devour her sweetheart. "Jason!" I yelled to my roommate. He was already out of the door. Jason knew, as did we all, who in the dorm had the gun. A gun shot rang out . . . from within the dorm. "Tobias!" Jason ran in after a long, agonizing ten minutes after that, "They got Kentucky! He shot at them, but more came in. Dang! Jessica was one of them! And Sarah, and Abbie, and Mike! He shot Nero." Why did he have to name them? Now I had images of our friends filling my head, all of their faces bloody and mouths full of flesh. I had just eaten breakfast with Jessica this morning, trying to decide whether or not I was going to date her. No way now. Jason vomited in our room. "Most of the guys in the dorm are safely human, though, it seems. They managed to beat the . . . zombies away. God, are they really zombies? Zombies are real?!" "Jason!" I snapped at him. "Right," he stammered. "Sorry. Anyways, they beat the . . . them back, and I ran in and grabbed his gun. Looks like he had only two magazines, 10 bullets each." I sighed, a surprising calm pushing through the heated torrent of blood flowing through my body. "That means we have only 19 shots." That was the first day. The . . . orcs did not attack again that night. A few of the girls from our sister dorm managed to get over to our building throughout the day - can still hear the fates of those who didn't make it. Amy, Lara, Cassidy, and Anna are all bedding in our dorm suite tonight. Too scared to sleep in separate rooms - all of us are. All of us scared. And one question in our minds: What if one of us is infected and we just haven't shown the symptoms yet? |
