NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Oct. 28, 1998--

Fifth Film in Series in Pre-Production

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Massacre

Theatrical Release Slated for 1999

Unapix Entertainment, Inc. has acquired theatrical rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and has begun pre-production on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - 25th Anniversary (TX25) announced Robert Baruc, president of Unapix Films, the new feature film division of Unapix Entertainment. TX25, the fifth motion picture in the popular series, is planned to be released theatrically in 1999.

"We're so excited to be associated with this project," said Mr. Baruc in making the announcement, "not in the least because we're all fans who have practically grown up on this classic horror series. TX25 will have all the thrills Thrills and chills of the 1974 original, but will deliver them in a hip, contemporary way. We're confident this will be a huge project, particularly in light of the success at the box office recently of genre film sequels such as "H2O;" "The Bride of Chucky" and "Scream 2."

Mr. Baruc, who will be executive producer on the project, said that Unapix is currently in discussion with a number of writers and directors for the film. Deborah Thompson-Duda, vice president of Unapix Films' west coast office, will oversee production. "This is representative of the type of film profile we're pursuing - young and commercial with solid theatrical appeal."

Unapix Entertainment Inc. is a global entertainment company specializing in producing, licensing and distributing market driven feature films, television programming and special interest home video in all media worldwide.

Anyone here old enough to remember this? I was a kid and was first getting into the series when this news was announced. I was really looking forward to it. A shame it was never made. It evolved into TX2000 as time went on, but then it just disappeared.

Maybe it got canned, cause of the upcoming 2003 remake at the time?

I did a quick google search, and found this.

The reason I'm writing is that Kim Henkel, the co-writer did a talk previous to the film being shown, and when the floor was oopened to questions, I asked If he was aware of the new Texas film (possibly called TX2000?) and if he thought it would be any good. He said that he knew people owned the rights to make a sequel, and that he had been approached to have some involvement with it, but he thinks that it's unlikely that the film will go into production due to severe script and budget problems and said that we wouldn't see such a film for a very long time.

A shame. I never heard of Unapix before this news came along back in the day. I'm still not familiar with their work.

I've heard many bad things about JACK FROST 2. Perhaps we dodged a bullet.

Yeah lol. Judging by the news about it, it sounds like they were trying to cash-in on H20's success. 'Tx25' is a blatant rip off of the title as well. Still wish it was made though.

I don't think I would've been against a "hip" TCM film in the style of say SCREAM and HALLOWEEN H20, because it certainly would've been a refreshing take on the series. A lot of the films are trying too hard to recapture the spirit of the original that they kind of don't have their own identity.

I can see it now. The poster would have the whole cast posed on it, with a dead serious look on their face. "TX25".

I do wish this movie had been made though.

At least if this was real it'd jump on the hip 90's bandwagon instead of being campy or gritty. It sounded like a fresh idea.

I agree with everyone else. That said, I would want it to be bloody as hell though (unlike a lot of other 90s films). And please leave out the meta shit and pop culture references every five minutes.

It would have to have that though, you know it would lol

And don't forget the 90s R'N'B/Rapper/Pop star thrown in for ticket sales. I'm feeling either J.Lo or one of the TLC girls for TX25. (troll)

Or Jada Picket Smith! (shock)

A 90's style TCM would be fun though minus pop culture references and some stupid rapper.
