NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Oct. 28, 1998--

Fifth Film in Series in Pre-Production

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Massacre

Theatrical Release Slated for 1999

Unapix Entertainment, Inc. has acquired theatrical rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and has begun pre-production on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - 25th Anniversary (TX25) announced Robert Baruc, president of Unapix Films, the new feature film division of Unapix Entertainment. TX25, the fifth motion picture in the popular series, is planned to be released theatrically in 1999.

"We're so excited to be associated with this project," said Mr. Baruc in making the announcement, "not in the least because we're all fans who have practically grown up on this classic horror series. TX25 will have all the thrills Thrills and chills of the 1974 original, but will deliver them in a hip, contemporary way. We're confident this will be a huge project, particularly in light of the success at the box office recently of genre film sequels such as "H2O;" "The Bride of Chucky" and "Scream 2."

Mr. Baruc, who will be executive producer on the project, said that Unapix is currently in discussion with a number of writers and directors for the film. Deborah Thompson-Duda, vice president of Unapix Films' west coast office, will oversee production. "This is representative of the type of film profile we're pursuing - young and commercial with solid theatrical appeal."

Unapix Entertainment Inc. is a global entertainment company specializing in producing, licensing and distributing market driven feature films, television programming and special interest home video in all media worldwide.

Anyone here old enough to remember this? I was a kid and was first getting into the series when this news was announced. I was really looking forward to it. A shame it was never made. It evolved into TX2000 as time went on, but then it just disappeared.

At least it could be better than 2 (maybe?), TNG and 3D.

True but it also would've triggered 2 or 3 more glossy pop-fests. Then we never would've gotten the remake and The Beginning (or at least not until like...2020) (suicide)

Big Ang should've been Chrissie in The Beginning.

Okay yeah...now I'm starting to feel glad this didn't happen after all (lol)
Yeah, I kinda agree. I mean, if it was gonna be in the vain of Scream or Halloween:H20, which was probably likely, especially given the title of this, it probably would not have worked that well. TCM is suppose to be gritty and dirty.

^ Exactly. Sure, some entries fell flat at that but I REALLY cant imagine a TCM with the whole 'perfect teens in a perfect town going to a gorgeous castle of a highschool, living in mansions, or going to the biggest, most spotless college campus ever built' thing going on. Fucking ew.

*all of the Sawyers are dolled up, wearing tuxedos and lingerie and shit*

Sorry but that's not Texas Chainsaw Massacre lol.

I considered writing a TCM fan script set on a college campus, but I decided not to because it would've been about a copycat killer, what with Leatherface being dead by this point. And I don't think any fan would want to read a TCM script like that.

A college campus would be a FRESH setting for a TCM film.

But you know if this movie would've happened it would be dumped on by fans simply because it's from the 90s lol

^ I see your shade attempt. (chew) I wouldn't dump on another 90s TCM (after all TCM 3 was from the 90s!) just for being made in the 90s. I'd dump on it for being crud.

College setting would be ass for a Texas Chainsaw Massacre, no offense. Sometimes the 'fresh, hip' approach isn't always the best one.

Honestly, I think an idea like that would be a hit or a miss. It would be interesting to read a fanscript of it though.

Agreed with J. I just don't know if I'd want to see it as a MOVIE lol.

That said, one or two scenes of Leatherface chasing someone through a college campus at night could be cool. I just...really wouldn't want to see the whole movie take place there.

*The teens talk about the murders in between classes* Ew.

If I wrote it, it would take place at a college campus, and other urban areas in Austin, Texas. The basic outline I came up with was a forgotten Sawyer (possibly Leatherface's daughter from TCM 3, who I neglected to include in my previous scripts) dresses up like Leatherface, and targets kids at the same campus Tommy Hardesty goes to. He is Sally's son, and the hero of one of my previous TCM fan scripts. There'd be no sensible way to continue the series formula with this one. After TEXAS CHAINSAW: VENGEANCE, I have confidence I probably could've pulled it off, but the biggest issue fans would have is that it isn't the real Leatherface.

The coolest thing about that would be seeing a girl wearing a skin mask, wielding the saw for once. That said, I'm not sure how I'd feel about it JUST being her. :P

There could probably be one or two more Sawyers for Tommy to kill, but there wouldn't be much of a Sawyer family in this one.

I'd actually be fine with that. I mean I love the family but I wouldn't mind seeing Leatherface or pseudo-Leatherface flying solo. At least for one movie.
