A documentary exploring genre based monster art takes an odd turn when the filmmakers are contacted by a man who claims he can prove that monsters are indeed real.

I loved this movie. I'm hoping for a sequel to see more of the monsters!

I saw an article on Facebook (but I didn't read it since I still need to see this) saying that a sequel was already being considered.

This was pretty fucking awesome and I definitely plan on buying it as soon as I can find it because this seems like something that'd have a ton of juicy behind the scenes features. I'd especially like some more interviews with the 'convention cast' at the beginning and some extended interviews in general, along with some REAL on-set interviews (I'm getting a headache trying to separate real from fake interviews and explain this, so I'll just stop. If you've seen it, you get it and if you don't, you should see this n-o-w).

Like Vanessa said, this was really good in the mockumentary department and some parts were actually really convincing. Like I mentioned before, there's a really cool part at the beginning (and elsewhere) with real horror actors, effects guys, and so on being interviewed and it all felt like REAL convention footage. Awesome stuff. I thought Adam Green did a really good job with the writing, pacing, etc. This was never really forced, was DEFINITELY not ever cheesy (they showed the 'things' just enough for them to be effective and two jumpscares actually got me pretty bad), and was pretty damn suspenseful every now and then. It was never boring, even when large chunks of the movie consisted of nothing but dialogue and while it didn't go as 'crazy' as I expected it to, the payoff was really satisfying and the final scenes (tape) were some of the creepiest things I've seen in an Adam Green film. Big props to him and his 'team' for this and I'd be totally fine with a sequel as long as they don't have the monsters take up too much screentime.

Adam's performance was totally fine but Ray REALLY stole the show here and this was the most deliciously crazy I've seen him in a while. (goo) Like I said, see this as soon as you can. I don't like it MORE than Hatchet and Frozen but it beats Hatchet II and some other things Adam's worked on and it's definitely one of his best (on a technical level) things. (thumbsup)

6.5/10 quality, 8/10 entertainment.

I really should've bought this by now. It's still one of my favorites that I've seen from this year.

In order to avoid audiences thinking that the film was indeed a real documentary and then suddenly turning on it and feeling hoaxed when the first monster is revealed, the decision was made to cast a recognizable actor as "William Dekker" and to be as clear as possible that the film was not trying to fool anyone or be passed off as "real." The filmmakers toiled over this decision when casting the film and at one point considered casting an unknown actor in the role of "Dekker." However, after careful consideration and looking at how similar docu-style narratives like 2007's "Poughkeepsie Tapes" had received negative reactions from audiences once the audiences realized that the films they were watching were indeed fiction and not in fact real, they decided to go with highly recognizable character actor Ray Wise as "Dekker" and make it as clear as possible that "Digging Up The Marrow" was a work of fiction. In testing the film they received the expected feedback from a few that once Ray Wise showed up on screen playing a character it "took them out of the movie as at that point they realized the film wasn't in fact real." When the filmmakers would then ask the viewer if he or she was still going to believe the film was real once the first monster revealed itself on camera merely 10 minutes later in the story, in every case the viewer acknowledged that casting Wise was indeed the right choice. Though "Marrow" is set in a real life setting and told in as authentic of a manner as possible to suspend audiences' disbelief, at it's core the film is a monster movie that delivers fantastical creatures on screen and no one would ever think the film was in fact real anyway, so the filmmakers opted to avoid the viewing experience becoming all about "a hoax" and instead chose to remind audiences right up front that they are watching a fictional scripted narrative which proved to be the right decision.

I personally think they still should have gone with an unknown actor for Dekker, and Adam Green was okay, acting-wise, but he needed to come off less as the Catfish guys and more like . . . I don't know . . . I don't know.

I especially didn't like the first interview with Dekker. Too many reaction shots of Adam. The other interviews were fine, it was just that one that bothered me a lot.

Surprisingly, the ending is similar to that of Creep. I was expecting something different, but it works okay.

Not the best movie from this year. Not the worst.

A sequel would be nice, but I don't know where they would take the story to.

Well, I'm sorry to say, but when Adam Green was doing his Q&A after Victor Crowley someone asked about if there would be a sequel to this, and, unfortunately, there won't be. The reason being this film got pirated a lot when it was released, so, that put the whole kibosh on there ever being a sequel. And it sounded cool, from what little he described of it. They were actually going to do most of the movie inside the Marrow. Bummer, heavy sigh.
