![]() Sounding a bit like Last Action Hero- the tale of the grieving daughter of a 1980s scream queen who finds herself trapped in her mother’s most famous film. The women are reunited and must fight off the film’s maniacal killer before the daughter can return to her life.” Production is scheduled to commence in Louisiana in April. I wasn't sure what to expect jumping into this film, but gahh.. 8/10 for me. I'm pretty bad at reviewing things, but I seriously enjoyed this film on all levels. The acting was pretty spot on, even from Taissa who usually plays a "emo-hipster" character on AHS but Tina (Angelah Trimbur) stole the fucking show for me. I died during her dance sequence and to know that she improvised it all only makes it better. The cinematography was really bright and vivid, which I enjoy, and I think it definitely worked for this film. The CGI was a little at times but I can always over look that if the story is good. The kills were so-so, but I felt like this was more of a comedy/horror spoof than a slasher, so it's perfectly fine. I also liked how the producers and writers played off the F-13th series. And finally, not going to lie, but when Kim Carnes started playing towards the end I cried, mainly because that song is one that reminds me of some one I've lost. Anyhoo.. I had a double-feature with this and Cooties, both were enjoyable, but The Final Girls was my preferred of the two. I'd suggest any one who enjoyed Tucker & Dale vs. Evil to give this a shot. You won't be disappointed. |

That was the vibe I got from this too: a PG-13 version of Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. There were a few places where it felt like it was holding back, and some of the humor was uneven IMO, but the main story of Max and Amanda/Nancy was excellent, and the jokes landed more often than they missed. I definitely agree with everyone who was a fan of Tina; I loved how they took the idea of the "dumb slut" in horror movies to its logical conclusion (i.e. she may well be retarded in the most literal sense), and her striptease was a great scene. My full review is here. |

I think this is going to be one of those horror movies that are going to be really good for watching with people that don't necessarily like horror. I already busted it out to watch with someone that mostly likes romantic comedies and had it go over great. |

I forgot to post here after watching this! I enjoyed the movie. I kind of wish it were Rated R, because I would have loved to see some gore. I thought the premise was really interesting and definitely the strongest point of the movie, besides a very strong main cast of characters. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing a sequel or maybe even a trilogy, as long as it changes it up a little bit. |

That's the core problem of this movie. It's an homage to the 80s slashers without one of the most important aspects of an 80s slasher. Entertaining, but too tame. |

I stand corrected, guys. I repeat - I STAND CORRECTED BECAUSE THIS WAS A BLAST. ![]() Even fifteen minutes or so into this, I was still pretty nervous thanks to some obvious and cheesy CGI (which didn't come across as DELIBERATELY cheesy so that hurt it) and the fact that the first fifteen minutes had more annoying character moments than funny ones (the bloopers of the opening scenes with the teens >>> The actual opening and the stuff in the theater). I did love the car scene though. That was a really priceless and sad mother/daughter scene that I want more of in slashers. Once it got to the camp and things kicked into gear, it took off and was almost instantly likeable. I loved everyone except for the random black dude and the counselor girl who started to have sex in the woods ("Where's the beef?!") and the obnoxious douchebag of the group who wasn't even all that attractive. He still had a few funny moments though. Lolwut@him randomly appearing to support the gay community too. So that makes nine really likeable/loveable/funny/memorable characters out of twelve (with most of Spoiler: click to toggle ). So I'd say that with characters and the death order, they did a perfect job. Everything I could say about Tina has been said but I guess I should add that I did NOT remember that that was Angela Trimbur until I saw her name in the credits! Wow, she looks different now! I really think Malin Akerman gave the strongest performance (that last scene with Max was fucking HEARTBREAKING in a way that I was definitely not expecting from a movie like this and the use of Bette Davis Eyes was nice). Taissa also surprised me. I don't think she could've carried the film without a good supporting cast but she was better than she often is.Character ranking; Nancy > Vicki > Tina > Gertie > Max > Chris > Amanda > Duncan > Blake > Paula > Kurt > Those two random counselors. The deaths are surprisingly good. Some were kind of cartoonish and bloodless but others were pretty violent for a PG13 movie and I don't recall any of the kills being AWFUL. A couple of the kills had a surprising amount of emotional weight to them as well, especially the last three 'courtesy of Billy' kills. I was sad, lol. The pacing was fine. The ending was decent. The final confrontation didn't go on nearly as long as I really hoped it would and I loved the Spoiler: click to toggle Maybe if a sequel does happen, it'll be Rated R? It's definitely one of the better movies I've watched lately. I think this and Last Shift are my favorites of the month. 6.5/10 quality, 8.5/10 entertainment. Kind of a disappointment. I didn't know it was PG-13 while watching it, so, kudos to the filmmakers. Still . . . when you're making a slasher film it should be rated R, no? Oh, well. I really loved the mother-daughter dynamic. Great addition to this genre. Really effective. CGI shouldn't have been used though. Okay. It's one thing to use CGI outside of the movie within the movie, but it's another to have CGI in Camp Bloodbath too. Wasn't Camp Bloodbath "made" in the 80s? So . . . it should only have practical effects from the 80s, right? Oh well. Still pretty decent flick. Hated Adam DeVine's character. The one making all the sexist jokes in the movie. Trying to be all macho. Really annoying, but such characters exist in slasher films. And in real life, unfortunately. I was surprised that Spoiler: click to toggle That 360º shot made me want to puke, but I didn't, thankfully. Other than that, C+/B-. Well, that and this movie made me fall in love with "Bette Davis Eyes"Interesting IMDb trivia: - The film was conceived and co-written by Joshua John Miller as a way of dealing with the death of his dad, Jason Miller, who had starred as Father Karras in The Exorcist (1973). - The script was originally optioned by New Line, but the studio wanted to eliminate all of the deep character moments and the mother-daughter plot. Eventually it wound up being produced by Sony, a studio which liked the emotional core but decided to tone down the slasher movie aspect to attain a PG-13 rating. - In the original version of the script, the kids began undergoing physical and psychological transformations after they entered the film. The girls' waistlines shrunk, their breasts ballooned, and Gertie was so enamored by her newfound beauty that she tried to sabotage her friends to ensure they could never leave. - When the characters get sucked into the movie-within-the-movie, it was scripted that they stepped into "a Technicolor world." The writers were initially horrified when they showed up on location and discovered that the crew had taken their words literally and decorated the forest with colorful artificial flowers. - The car accident at the beginning of the film was entirely computer generated but the car crash and explosion at the camp was done practically. - Director Todd Strauss-Schulson spent several days hopped up on Adderall while working on the script, which is how the drug found its way into the story. - The lengthy sequence in which the kids first encounter Billy Murphy in the forest was shot over the course of one day. With 55 setups, tension was high and the crew continued to work after sunset, strategically lighting shots to make it appear as though it was still daytime. Spoiler: click to toggle By the way, how is it that Malin Akerman hasn't been a Bond girl yet in any of the new movies?

I watched this tonight. I've heard nothing but good things, and needless to say, I was pretty impressed by this fun little meta slasher feature in a delightful number of ways. I honestly just expected a fun horror-comedy with no real substance, but I actually got a lot more than that. I must say, I'm becoming pretty fond of Taissa Farmiga. She may not yet have the same level of acting chops as her sister yet, but she's definitely a force to be reckoned with, and I sincerely hope she sticks with the horror genre because she has the potential to become a genuine scream princess in the future. I was surprised by how much I LOVED all of the characters. Gertie was adorable, as Alia Shawkat always, always, ALWAYS manages to be. (I just love those freckles, to be honest. They rock my little world.) Nine Dobrev was a lot of fun as the bitchy (but quite likable and sympathetic) Vicki. The ever-so-pretty Alexander Lugwig, who I've had a secret crush on since I was a young teen (I didn't realize his name, but I had a crush on him back when The Seeker first came out, heh.), was endearingly sweet as Alex. He was as cute as boots on a rooster, if you ask me. Malin Ackerman was great as always, particularly in the meta-role of Nancy. I liked all of the characters. My favorite had to be Tina, though. I am a sucker for silly female characters in slashers, and that was pretty much her character's entire schtick... And it worked magically. I liked all of them, though. There was not anyone in the movie I wanted to see die, and I actually cared for everyone, even Kurt, which was your typical Adam DeVine character. The kills were pretty good for a PG-13 movie. I wish there had been a little more blood and gore, as I don't see why a movie that isn't getting a wide release needs to be cut down to a PG-13. It's not like it's going to make any big money anyways, so why cut out the bits that will make the horror lovers this is geared towards happy as clams. Regardless of gore, though, some of the deaths were actually pretty good. Spoiler: click to toggle There is one thing I loved about the film that I never expected to even be a part of the equation: Emotion. This was a surprisingly sweet, deep, genuinely heartfelt film. The character of Max is so obsessed with protecting Nancy because she was not able to save her mother, because she wants to be able to hold on to anything relating to her mom. She simply can't let go. Spoiler: click to toggle I also quite like the ending, as it reminds the audience that this is a meta slasher comedy and is not meant to be taken too seriously, particularly since the last ten minutes of the film are fairly serious and emotional. Spoiler: click to toggle This was an overall great, entertaining little film. I don't get why it didn't get a huge mainstream success story, as it was one of the best films of the year. In terms of meta, I would actually put it above the likes of The Cabin in the Woods, but I know that's likely a very unpopular opinion. This film has something going for it that I never expected... A genuine sense of heart, a sense of longing, but at the same time, it's still a slasher comedy at its core, and it manages to keep these two very conflicting tones balanced properly, which is a very hard thing to do. I definitely recommend this film to ANYONE, but most particularly fans of the slasher genre... Unless you require gore in your films to enjoy them. Then you should likely steer clear from this. I give it an A. |

This is fun, but could've and should've been WAY better. It completely fails as an 80s slasher deconstruction (to the point the fictional film it's mocking for being stereotypical is LESS cliched and stereotypical than the film itself), and the death order suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked (dear horror comedy film makers, do not kill your by far funniest characters by the halfway point of the film) Taissa was also surprisingly bland for a girl who was interacting with her dead mom in a movie. Vickie and Kurt were great though (the latter was especially hilarious), and Duncan was pretty funny too. Edited by Repo, Jun 19 2016, 08:23 AM.
