Valhalla Rising is a 2009 Danish film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, starring Mads Mikkelsen. The film takes place in 1000 AD and follows a Norse warrior named One-Eye and a boy as they travel with a band of Christian Crusaders in pursuit of a Crusade. Instead, they find themselves in an unknown and unfamiliar land. The film was shot entirely in Scotland. Title is derived from the combination of Kenneth Anger's Scorpio Rising and Lucifer Rising with a Viking-theme.

So I think I'm going to stop seeking out movies from this director since it had the exact same pacing, quietness, and 'style and visuals over substance' hoopla that Only God Forgives had (I still wouldn't mind seeing Drive sometime though). I expected a bloody, action packed, character driven, story driven epic and instead we got a bunch of boring, nameless, bland-as-fuck characters on a boat and a beautiful patch of land that they randomly think is a Hell of sorts. Fun, fun. They kill eachother randomly. They all have stank looks on their faces like they're some Myspace celebrity trying to look like a badass while testing out the new camera their mommy bought them for Christmas, 2007. They all have like...2-5 minutes of dialogue, tops and I cant remember a single name other than 'One Eye.' Why this is so acclaimed, i'll never understand. This director/writer is honestly one of the most overrated, the films are some of the most pretentious....urgh.

Still...I really dug the messages and interpretations of this film, pretty powerful stuff, even I must admit. I just prefer to be entertained at least a little bit.

I recommend this to arthouse hounds who feel the need to read the interpretations of a film after seeing it, I do NOT recommend it to people looking for a memorable movie with a welldone plot. NEXT!

6/10 quality (would've been a 4 if not for the great look), 3/10 entertainment.
