Heat Vision writes that Focus Features has picked up the North American distribution rights to The Forest, a supernatural thriller based on an original idea by David S. Goyer.

“Forest is set in the legendary Aokigahara forest, a real-life place in Japan where people go to end their lives.”

According to the producers, Forest centers on “a young American woman who comes in search of her twin sister, who has mysteriously disappeared. Despite everyone’s warnings not to ‘stray from the path,’ she dares to enter the forest to discover the truth about her sister’s fate, only to be confronted by the angry and tormented souls of the dead who now prey on anyone who crosses their paths.”

The project comes with Jason Zada (“Take This Lollipop,” pictured) attached to direct and a script by Sarah Cornwell.

David Linde’s Lava Bear Films is producing the film along with Goyer and Nellie Reed under his Phantom Four banner.

Focus has already set a January 8, 2016, release for the U.S.

The January release date gives me pause, but the poster, the trailers, and the setting give me hope this'll be decent, at the very least. Consider me sold so far.

If you hate The Forest (1982) I'll be glad to take that VHS tape off your hands. ;)

Ehh, I don't really feel nervous about January releases now. After all, quite a few have been decent (or really good). I like plenty of January Horror movies. :P

Just watched the trailer. It looks like it could be damn creepy and well-done.

The posters are pretty great, too.

Hope I'm not the only one who feels some type of way about this, since I already knew this would be about the Aokigahara forest the moment the trailer mentioned Fiji.

The trailers aren't looking AS creepy as I was hoping, but I still look forward to seeing this in the theater... Probably with a bunch of teen girls screaming at every jump scene just because, and with 12 year olds popcorn and chiling behind me, making out while taking selfies.

Well, Krampus is a movie I want to see in theaters during Christmas time because it's a Christmas movie. Plus, maybe if I go see it in theaters, Michael Dougherty will feel proud to have my support, and he'll hurry his ass up making Trick 'r Treat 2 before he gets so old that his arthritis keeps him from writing the damn script.

Yeah, but at the rate he's going... I mean, it's been what? Eight years since Trick 'r Treat was made? Almost seven since it's release to DVD? And yet all he has now is a manuscript outline? No. You gettin' old, buddy. You're not a kid anymore. You could get hurt out there!

The more I see things from this, the more excited I get. I almost forget that this isn't an American remake to a Japanese film.

Bloody Disgusting posted a link to "an immersive 360 degree sight and sound experience that takes fans right into the heart of Aokigahara, the terrifying real life suicide forest located at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan."

Release bump.

I'm really excited for this. I just know it's going to be widely hated no matter how good it is though.

I'm planning on seeing this Sunday and am hoping for the best although I have liked a number of January horror movies. I will probably like it though.

Well I saw this and I liked it much more than I thought I was going to. I loved the setting really and a lot of the psychological aspects to it, as well as Natalie Dormer as Sara. The crowd at my theater weirdly clapped at the end of this too.
