Heat Vision writes that Focus Features has picked up the North American distribution rights to The Forest, a supernatural thriller based on an original idea by David S. Goyer.

“Forest is set in the legendary Aokigahara forest, a real-life place in Japan where people go to end their lives.”

According to the producers, Forest centers on “a young American woman who comes in search of her twin sister, who has mysteriously disappeared. Despite everyone’s warnings not to ‘stray from the path,’ she dares to enter the forest to discover the truth about her sister’s fate, only to be confronted by the angry and tormented souls of the dead who now prey on anyone who crosses their paths.”

The project comes with Jason Zada (“Take This Lollipop,” pictured) attached to direct and a script by Sarah Cornwell.

David Linde’s Lava Bear Films is producing the film along with Goyer and Nellie Reed under his Phantom Four banner.

Focus has already set a January 8, 2016, release for the U.S.

Here's my review!

The movie was decent. Nothing bad, but nothing great. I see why a lot of people got their feelings all bundled up in a blender with the whole whitewashing and insensitive approach to a very real problem in Japan. If anything, they only have a right to complain about the latter. The movie's heroine is supposed to be the eyes of the viewer of how we perceive Japan to be. It's all about culture shock as she delves into Japan and the arising problem.

I do have to say that the concept is pretty gold and it's a pretty creepy story to think about if it were true. However, it doesn't really grasp the concept with enough delicateness. It feels exploitative and a little disrespectful in its taking advantage of real loss. However, setting that aside and looking into the movie itself.

It's well acted from the two leads: Natalie Dormer and Taylor Kinney. However, it is a very straight-forward horror movie that heavily relies on old tropes that I thought we were moving past. It's a little sad to see that characters will still go outside to investigate strange noises or things they thought they saw even when every instinct in your body is telling you to turn away and get out now. There's also nothing new to see in the movie, because it picks and borrows from different movies that actually did them better.

The movie did have a few really good creepy moments and a really nice psychological horror aspect to it that pleasantly reminded me of Silent Hill or Jacob's Ladder.

So in other words, The Forest is middle-ground horror that you really shouldn't go into expecting much. It's fun for the time-being and maybe even a little memorable and still worth the trip.

^ I for one like the 'tropes we should be moving past.' Sure, they're predictable and all but hey, they've always been here and probably always will be. It still leaves more room for surprises than the tropes found in other genres.

Thats a fantastic poster!

Also Jon: The only reason I didn't like the tropes in this particular movie is because it doesn't offer anything new or surprising. Just the same old jumpscare that worked the first time and is just no longer relevant. Tbh it's more groan-inducing than scary.

^ That's really neat. <3.

I just realized that I still haven't reviewed it. I'll post it when I'm a little more energized since I have a fair amount to say about it. In short though, it was decent but nothing too great. Still not the piece of shit most people think it is though.

And I'm totally fine with movies (like this one) not really bringing much new to the table IF they have a good enough concept, good enough perfomances, and if the played out scares somehow manage to at least be effective a few times (and a couple of the jumps here did get me a little bit, lol). If a film is total crap, then yeah, the overdone and predictable jumpscares are groanworthy but it was clear that at least a bit of effort was put into this one so I didn't really mind that.

So like I said, this was good but not great. It had a good cast, a perfect location, and it was somewhat creepy. Some of the jumpscares managed to get me and for the most part, I thought they were well timed. It'd not the most jolting movie ever but I have to give it credit for being mostly effective in that department. It's not very violent and the bodycount is small but it's hard to tell who will live and die.

There is one jump scare/death that I thought was really poorly done and had "mid 2000s cliché" dumped all over it. It was the

They did a good job of not showing the evil spirits too much. One scene involving line used to track Sara's journey through the forest and another scene involving a pit and

were two of the more effective parts of the film. The whole thing had a really dark, wet look to it that I liked it. It was rather slow paced but I didn't mind since I was enjoying the scenery so much. (lol) The musical score is kind of forgettable but not bad. The story itself flows well, minus a couple of quiet bumps (the argument between the two leads wasn't all that needed and was sort of dropped after a little while though I do like that it was included since it showed that the forest really was fucking with both of them - I also didn't like the guy that much anyway so I didn't mind that they wanted to make him look like an ass for a while). Everything that happened made sense.

I do wish we had gotten a couple more characters to be killed throughout the story since the death aspect was one of my favorite things about this despite the fact that it isn't very violent and the very few deaths we get are nothing particularly harsh. There's a scene toward the very end that

I'm not sure if I LOVE the ending or if I just appreciated it because it was somewhat surprising. I like that this didn't seem like it was exploiting the real people who have died in the forest. The sisters' backstory involving

6/10 quality, 6.5-7/10 entertainment. Slightly above average, feels very much like a 2000s J-Horror remake at times, is atmospheric, and has a couple of good jolts and a good enough lead character.

Also why was Eoin Macken the third person listed in the cast? He literally had two minutes of screentime and nothing to do. Michi's actor and Hochiko's actress should've been listed third and fourth.

That scene with Sarah and the line was my favorite moment of the film. I kind of wish there was more stuff like that in the film.

I went to see this by myself this evening. I was actually VERY impressed by it. I did not expect much. The theater was absolutely empty save for me, so I had the whole place to myself. It was kind of nice, kind of creepy, etc. I didn't expect it to be so empty, and the film did kind of keep me on the edge of my seat.

I think the lead actress, Natalie Dormer, did a pretty great job. The character of Sarah reminded me a lot of Rachel from The Ring, in how she was not a particularly "sweet" character. She had a lot of moments of snark, of snide, of bitch, etc... She was a pretty "cool" character. I rooted for her no matter what, and that's definitely a good thing for a film that focuses almost solely on two characters, her being one of them.

I also thought she looked kind of hot as Jess, almost as if Natalie decided to front a Norwegian symphonic metal band. :P

I thought the film kept a pretty creepy, edgy vibe throughout. The jump scares were cliche and predictable, but still pretty effective. The film very rarely made me laugh, when a lot of jump scare-laden horror films tend to. There was only one scene that was unintentionally funny: When Sarah visits Jess' classroom, and that student freaks the fuck out. Little Japanese girls screaming makes me laugh because of bad acting, that is. But that is the only unintentionally funny scene that stands out. Everything else felt pretty menacing and dark.

I was also pretty impressed and surprised by how cruel the film could be towards the third act, the way the forest completely fucked with Sarah, showing her the more horrible things from her past. It didn't just try to be a basic supernatural horror flick that's PG-13 and takes place in Asia, that's for sure. :P

I found the ending to be pretty effective, with

This film reminded me of the supernatural horror films from the mid-2000s, and that's a good thing, as I actually quite like that era of horror. If not for the smartphones used throughout, the film could easily have been from that era.

Overall, this was a very creepy, well-done horror movie. I didn't expect much, but I think the critics have been way too fucking hard on it.

I'm going to say it again, just to bump this up. I am really surprised at how much I liked this movie. It was creepy enough. Its jump scares were actually effective, and the main girl was not a Mary Sue type character. She was actually kind of a bitch, and I loved that.

I don't remember if I mentioned this in my review, but there is ONE thing I would've liked to see. I understand the need for the sidekick guy character, Aidan, but I think the movie could've been even scarier if

Taylor Kinney's teeth bother me.

For some reason.
