Heat Vision writes that Focus Features has picked up the North American distribution rights to The Forest, a supernatural thriller based on an original idea by David S. Goyer.

“Forest is set in the legendary Aokigahara forest, a real-life place in Japan where people go to end their lives.”

According to the producers, Forest centers on “a young American woman who comes in search of her twin sister, who has mysteriously disappeared. Despite everyone’s warnings not to ‘stray from the path,’ she dares to enter the forest to discover the truth about her sister’s fate, only to be confronted by the angry and tormented souls of the dead who now prey on anyone who crosses their paths.”

The project comes with Jason Zada (“Take This Lollipop,” pictured) attached to direct and a script by Sarah Cornwell.

David Linde’s Lava Bear Films is producing the film along with Goyer and Nellie Reed under his Phantom Four banner.

Focus has already set a January 8, 2016, release for the U.S.

My friend Axelle was looking forward to this. She watched it the other day and hated it. (un)

A lot of people hated this movie, but I liked it on account of it feeling very much like the American remakes of Asian movies from the mid-2000s. That could be why everyone hated it because most people claimed to hate that era of horror, as well.

But I'm surprised Axelle hated it, to be honest. She seems like someone who would quite like it.

Yeah, she was really excited because she's obsessed with the actual forest. Maybe that was why she was disappointed. It wasn't as historical as she was probably expecting.

Perhaps. The film didn't deal with the history, but instead created a fictional supernatural aspect to it that a lot of SJWs were offended by.

I wasn't into this. This was probably a lot better in theaters where the setting could carry a lot more of the weight. The forest they filmed in is really gorgeous. I'm sure that if I had watched it on a big screen that I would have been transfixed by the pretty trees. The sound design was really good, especially in the first half. The make-up design was nice.

I did really like Sara, even though the movie gave us next to no context. The movie the Cliff Notes version of the set up scenes, but I think it helped that I found the lead pretty charming. I don't feel like I know anything about her, but she was pretty funny in the opening scenes, so I like her despite her having very few characteristics. I'm not even sure who Rob is supposed to be to her and how she feels about that. Natalie Dormer did a good job playing two distinctly different people.

Most of the movie seemed really generic and watered down. There were a couple bits that I liked, but they were really overshadowed by a lot of the pointless jump scares. It's a shame, because the director did deliver a lot of those well. The story ended up being really thin, which is disappointing because there is a lot of things about it that I would normally have really liked.

I would be interested in seeing if there are any deleted scenes. I thought I saw stuff in the commercials that didn't show up in the movie.

I thought this was a good movie, but it was nowhere near as good as the likes of The Boy and The Witch.

This is about to be on DVD, isn't it? I know it's iTunes now. I THINK it may be out on DVD already, too. I'll probably buy it in a few weeks.

I rented this movie. It was decent, but disappointed at the ending. I was not really surprise the movie was not filmed in Japan, but Serbia instead.

Watching this right now,

About 30 mins into could have done without those fake scace scences.

Finding hard to get into..

It just worth watching, nothing really stood out, to many tame jump scences

I didn't bother seeing this. The trailers were a meh-factory and January has long since been a dumping ground for bad horror movies.

Almost did for Natalie Dormer, though. Love her. And I'm happy that her acting is usually considered the best thing about this

Puppy, just because there's no evidence she killed her aunt doesn't make her dating material.

Ehh, I NEVER judge by release date alone. That's always been kind of silly imo. We've gotten some pretty good releases in January. It's especially unfair to judge a movie if they were originally going to be released in November/December but the release was pushed to January instead. Not saying that's the case here but...

This was a fun movie to see with friends and I had a blast watching it. Definitely won't hold up on repeated viewings for me personally but that doesn't matter.

We've gotten some pretty good releases in January.
... We have? (wary) I remember Devil Inside.... Which I hated. Texas Chainsaw 3D... Which I hated. Devil's Due.... Which I didn't see.

I may give this a go at some point online for Dormer, but it's hardly a priority

Yeah I also think that the January dumping ground thing is tired personally. I thought that Jeruzalem, Mama, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, My Bloody Valentine 3D, Cloverfield, and Daybreakers were some solid horror films that came out during that month.

And while I personally don't love The Boy I definitely see why some like it so much.
