http://bloody-disgusting.com/editorials/3377657/10-horror-films-released-in-january-that-were-actually-good/ And that's just a small handful, lol. I don't really see release dates as the main thing to turn me off of a movie. And I'm not at all picky about what I watch (just with what I end up REwatching). I try to watch as much as possible so I'm "well rounded", I guess you could say.

I'll give you MBV3D and especially Cloverfield, but I think it's the 2010s where it became really notoriously bad. At least with horror It objectively is a dumping ground, though (even if good movies pop up occasionally). There's entire articles explaining. Basically, it's after the Oscar cut off date but before they can drop any big movies. So studios put ones they don't have faith in and don't care much about in January Edited by Repo, Jun 8 2016, 10:34 PM.

10 movies from two decades? Lol. I didn't say they NEVER release good things, just that it's dump month for studios and odds are more often than not they won't be so good. I prefer the term selective to picky

Which may be true but it all boils down to taste, I guess. I just don't see the point in completely ignoring a January released movie because there's always the chance that it'll be pretty great. And yay, a fellow Cloverfield fan<3. That movie gets too much hate (I like 10 Cloverfield Lane as well but I think I still prefer the first, lol). I thought PA: The Marked Ones was one of the better ones in the series (unlike some of the other stale, tired films in the series, it actually tried to be entertaining). I liked Jeruzalem a lot but I don't think that should count as a BIG January release (if we're counting smaller releases then I could probably sit here and list awesome January releases all day). Daybreakers, MBV '09 - flawed as it is, Mama, and Cloverfield are all good. None are the best of their release years, of course, but I enjoyed them all. And yes Repo, ten movies from two decades. I mean, it's not like theatrical Horror movies are really clumped together THAT much in the first two or three months of the year (applies to most years, at least). Most years, we get one or two Horror releases in January, if that. So they're saying that out of 40-60 January theatrical Horror releases, 10+ were good. That's about average since A LOT of Horror fans are all "everything that goes to theaters sucks!" To some, 10 would be totally generous. To others who aren't as 'selective' ( ), it's a kind of low number.

I never completely ignore January. I'm just way more skeptical of a movie being released in January due to how studios work. If something that looked really good comes out in January, I'd definitely watch. If it looks lack luster? Well... I know how January works already, so odds are the movie is lackluster I didn't even bother with TMO besides the trailer, which was painful. And wasn't Mama February? If that was January, yeah. That was solid. Though Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was criminally underused Edited by Repo, Jun 8 2016, 10:41 PM.

Didn't see that one.... But that's not what I've been hearing ![]() EDIT: Though as said, my point was more that I'm skeptical of January released based on how studio heads handle things rather than "Nothing good ever comes out in January, don't bother." Edited by Repo, Jun 8 2016, 10:45 PM.

This here is quite the overall bland and generally unimpressive effort. Most of the film's shortcomings are placed at the hands of it's tame and generally unimpressive scare scenes that are forced here by the film's rating which really does quite an injustice to the film. By making sure that the film isn't too terribly offensive for any particular crowd, it forces a great deal of neutering to take place where the scares are simply wave-after-wave of extreme quiet punctuated by a sudden burst of unearthly ghost-like moans off in the distance of something grotesque appearing just out of the camera's view as it cuts away right before something is going to happen, and it's frequency is the greatest giveaway that it's going to be kept to such a relatively low standard it's not going to generate much of what it was originally trying to accomplish which is all part of trying to keep the film toned down. Likewise, that also extends to the other areas that would potentially increase the scare factor in the rather tame and lifeless blood and gore featured throughout here with the film not really featuring many kills at all as the focus is on the investigation rather than the ghosts actually killing so there's hardly any chances for that to occur and the few chances for them are simply cut away without really showing them so it's gore quotient is extremely low. These here are all mostly rendered moot, though, with the film's decision to include the haunting storyline rather than the rampaging ghost which gives this one such a languid and plodding pace that doesn't really offer up many chances for it to allow that type of mass killing that would've bumped this one up considerably by offering some scares of what they potentially could've done. Another big determining factor here is the utterly moronic main character who lets her stubborn and straightforward mindset continually get her into trouble when she's been told and warned of what would happen as that leads them into their encounters with the ghosts which really makes it hard to side with her. These factors here really end up derailing this one enough that it doesn't offer much with only a few solid positives on display. The main thing about this one is the rather fun atmosphere here which really creates quite the impressive and dynamic feel for the main forest as it's suitably imposing and chilling. This setting with the lush trees and dense, utterly claustrophobic arrangements create a truly creepy location that lets the ghost action come from a great base as the short spooks are filled throughout the whole second half which is quite fun at times with the encounter at the tent, the great sequence in the pit and surrounding tunnels and the film's highlight sequence in the cabin where the ghosts come out in much more active sequences that leads to the fun involved in the forest. That gives this one enough that it becomes watchable, though the flaws do hold it back much more. |

I didn't really care for this movie until the characters went to the Suicide Forest. The beginning felt too much like "Last Week on The Forest . . ." Afterwards we have the set-up for Sara being in Japan, but that could have been handled better. I think the biggest problem is that the makers of the movie felt Natalie Dormer needed to change her hair color to play Jess, but Jeremy Irons didn't need to do that for Dead Ringers. Hair color isn't what makes a character different. It's their mannerisms. Their actions. I couldn't really tell you the difference between Sara and Jess other than that one's blonde and the other has black hair. Anyway, I love how the forest became the Overlook Hotel of sorts. Although it would have been nice if maybe the movie was less supernatural and more Deliverance. I don't know. The supernatural elements worked, but only to a certain extent. The ending was good, yet I would have liked it more if it turned out that Spoiler: click to toggle
