“A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship’s crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation.

Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for 3 decades, the creatures aren’t about to give up the warmth of human companionship.”

ONLY PRACTICAL ANIMATRONIC AND MAKEUP EFFECTS

That's the only thing I needed to read to know that I was going to watch this.

For some reason, this reminds me of The Thing.

Wow, a cool old-school style creature feature with all practical effects? Sign me up immediately.
Do illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup?

Some people are like slinkies: not good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one falls down the stairs.

For the most part, this was pretty satisfying. It wasn't AS bloody and insane as I was hoping it would be, but it was good enough when it came to the deaths. The creature effects were really good, though I'm pretty fucking sad that my screen was acting up when I watched this so everything seemed really dark so I'm probably going to have to watch it again to get the full effect. Sadly, I watched it with Robby who didn't like the darkness either and he rarely rewatches things so I feel like he got screwed out of what was a pretty good effects movie. :/ Blah!

But moving on. I like that the creature didn't keep the same appearance throughout. Instead, they went the route of The Thing by having it change shape, size, and overall appearance. You can always tell it's the same monster but it rarely looks the exact same. That was nice. Not the best creature effects I've ever seen but I'll take this over 100% CGI monsters and SyFy stuff any day.

The characters are decent for the most part. Some of the guys were rather boring but that's fine since they were the first to go, leaving us with the 5-7 better characters of the group. I LOVED Svetlana.

, she was easily my favorite of the group. Funny, bitchy, threatening, and really pretty. And her accent wasn't ultra fake sounding like a lot of accents in movies, so that's another plus. I liked Lance Henriksen in this. He wasn't randomly playing a total badass and he wasn't randomly being swarmed by hot women the whole time. His character reminded me of Weyland in Alien Vs Predator more than anything. The main girl was pretty likeable, but more than just a little cliché. I liked Sadie but she was underused bigtime. It was weird that they killed off this film's equivalent of

from Jason X so early on. Bowman was hot. I couldn't stand Dock. Big G was my third favorite character.

This was pretty fast paced, just the right length (I was nervous about it being only 77 minutes long before the credits but it worked), and entertaining. I just wish I hadn't seen it 'dimmed' so I could've seen ALL of the bizarre and effective creature effects in their full 'glory.' (lol)

6/10 quality, 7/10 entertainment.

The whole concept of this movie (especially the effects work) had me interested, but the reviews I'd read seemed to suggest that it was pretty much style over substance. Your review, though, gives me hope. Might have to check this out.

Don't expect a masterpiece or anything. :P For the most part, I guess you could say it is style over substance. It's nothing we haven't already seen in a million other creature films - it's just handled 'the old school way' in this when it comes to the effects and whatnot.

The movie's commitment to the 80's sci-fi/horror style that they're imitating is really endearing. I think it made me like this more than I normally would have. It's impressively ambitious and earnest. The effects are amazing. Lance Henriksen also seems really happy to be there. I liked the characters. The script isn't perfect, but the movie has a fast pace and some really good moments. It is the kind of movie where you're really excited to see what the people behind it do next, even if you didn't enjoy it.

I liked the effects themselves a lot, but I don't think the lighting and direction showed them off as much as they should have. With the amount of experience that the people behind this movie have, I would have expected them to do more to highlight the effects. The cinematography and editing leave a lot to be desired. The sound design was also not my favorite.

This, coupled with the somewhat weak script destroyed any tension or atmosphere. However, I loved the effects so I'll watch their next feature for sure. (goo)

I hope that the script will be better on their next film, since they'll probably be designing effects to fit a script instead of writing a script around the effects.
