Trapped in the Mexican jungle, a group of friends stumble upon a creeping horror unlike anything they could ever imagine. Two young couples are on a lazy Mexican vacation–sun-drenched days, drunken nights, making friends with fellow tourists. When the brother of one of those friends disappears, they decide to venture into the jungle to look for him. What started out as a fun day-trip slowly spirals into a nightmare when they find an ancient ruins site . . . and the terrifying presence that lurks there.

405 out of 500+ pages. Great characters, creepy scenes, and the "terrifying presence" is really effective.

So much better than the movie. It did not rely on gore to be scary (though the movie did have some great stuff) and it felt like watching an actual movie because the setting and everything is more detailed.

I loved this book. I only wish the nature of the "antagonist" had not been spoilt for me by so many reviews on Amazon; it would have been even better. I thought the movie was terrible. It turns the story into a generic creature (sort of) feature, while the novel is heavy with internal monologue, all of which is lost in the transition to screen.

Didn't think much of the movie, but enjoyed this. Much better death order

This was such a great book. I enjoyed this and the movie just as much, but I definitely felt the book had a better death order. (Mainly Mathias)

Mathias is the best character in my opinion

He really is. My favorite character from the book. I was sad that he was reduced to Jeff's fate from the book in the movie.

I've seen the movie before I read this and therefore knew who the antagonists are. Still, I was terrified. The only difference is I felt more sympathy over the characters. It was like I was there watching them struggle knowing what they're up against but I can't do anything to save them. Oh well it was a dreadful reading experience. Still my favorite horror novel.
