Tracking Board – who has been both right and wrong about scoops on occasions – says that Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Psycho) will direct Death Note, Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata!!

“The film follows the story of a high school student who finds a mysterious notebook that lets him instantly kill any person by writing their name in the book. As the student’s body count piles up, a nameless FBI agent begins tracking him.”

Van Sant replaces Shane Black, who was attached to direct as recently as 2013. The most recent draft of the script was written by Black, Anthony Bagarozzi, and Charles Mondry.

Dan Lin, Doug Davison, Roy Lee, and Brian Witten are producing through Vertigo Entertainment, Witten Pictures, and Lin Pictures.

I'm really pleasantly surprised to hear that this might still be happening.

Shane Black was supposed to be doing it originally, but I guess he got too busy with Marvel stuff.

I'm surprised I haven't heard about this. I enjoy Death Note and I'm interested to see how this plays out--mainly with Van Sant being in charge.

Can't you see it? The effects of cinema violence on society?

This definitely needs an update. Adam Wingard is directing. Rainey Qualley and Nat Wolff will star. The script they're using now is by Jeremy Slater.

It's going to be on Netflix. Rainey Qualley and Jeremy Slater are out. Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, and Keith Stanfield are in.

Wait Margaret Qualley has a sister and she originally was attached to this? So strange to me.

Apparently, it's racism.

I am extremely interested in the source material, but yeah. Didn't realize Wingard was directing. That's disappointing

Puppy, just because there's no evidence she killed her aunt doesn't make her dating material.

I think Adam Wingard may have not ever read the manga or even watched the anime. Everything he says about it is off.

I think he's outright said he's basically going to do whatever he wants with it, so (the cast alone is sorta proof of that)

I actually liked it. I have no loyalty or anything to the original material and found this to be an admittedly goofy but fun film. The death scenes was so absurd but fun. Very final destination

I'm planning on watching it later today. I think I'll be glad to have read something about how it was pitched to be two or three movies. I've seen headlines saying that it ends before a lot of the good stuff happens, and I think it'll be something that is good to know for adjusting expectations.

I haven't finished it yet, but Lakeith Stanfield is great as L. His performance is really important in setting the tone. I didn't realize how much the movie would depend on him until I started it.

I enjoyed this. It does feel a lot like a Final Destination film. The tone was really inconsistent, but it made the movie more fun. Because Light is rather boring and the plot a bit nonsensical, it's the tone and black comedy that make this enjoyable.

As an adaptation, it's impossible to judge it. It takes the basic idea and turns it into something entirely different. There isn't much of anything at all that remained the same. The original plot is definitely more interesting. This has none of the tension of the original. Largely, it's because Light isn't much of a character. The movie gives barely any motivation for his actions, which makes the plot very thin. There is also not nearly enough Ryuk.

There are a few changes the I liked. There's more L, which is a very good thing. All of the characters are different than the original versions, but I like how they changed him quite a bit. I also obviously appreciate that it is considerably more gory.

About the whitewashing, it's hard to argue that the movie needs Nat Wolfe in the role of Light. His character has been changed so he's an average American male horror lead, and he could have been played by just about any actor the right age. There's no reason to not cast someone Japanese.

I'm not familiar with the manga or anything, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I liked this alot. I liked Light, and it was fun seeing all the familiar Seattle filming locations like the ferris wheel :P It kind of felt like two different movies at times, but I didn't mind. Like Vanessa mentioned, the deaths do remind me alot of FD, so that was a plus as well.

I decided that I'm just going to watch this soon, without reading or watching anything else Death Note related. I don't trust the negative things I've heard about this since it really is one of those films that was destined to be hated regardless of quality.
