Fans turned out in force for FANGORIA and SCREAM Factory’s NYC screening of SLEEPAWAY CAMP last night. But as fans laughed, cheered and gasped throughout the feature, the most shocking revelation at this event was director Robert Hiltzik’s revelation that his announced SLEEPAWAY CAMP remake may not be coming to a theater near you.

“There were several studios interested in remaking SLEEPAWAY CAMP,” noted Hiltzik when asked of the remake. “But they had their own vision for what that should be, and in the interest of protecting what worked about SLEEPAWAY CAMP, I decided to try to remake the film myself. But whether or not that will actually pan out is still in the air.”

However, SLEEPAWAY CAMP fans dare not fear about the slasher franchise, as Hiltzik hinted that there may be future adventures of Angela Baker.

“I will say there is another story out there for SLEEPAWAY CAMP that follows RETURN TO SLEEPAWAY CAMP. I ended that movie in a way that didn’t close up the series for a reason,” added Hiltzik. “I actually may have some news on a third SLEEPAWAY CAMP film soon so keep an eye out for that.”

For those who are fans of the SLEEPAWAY CAMP franchise, Hiltzik has disavowed the Michael Simpson-directed entries in the series, UNHAPPY CAMPERS and TEENAGE WASTELAND, making RETURN TO SLEEPAWAY CAMP as a direct sequel to his original. Considering that genre films are being shopped around en masse at the Cannes Film Festival, might we be taking a trip back to Camp Arawak sooner rather than later?!

Old news, dating back to May, but I didn't actually find out until recently.

If Hiltzik is planning a sequel to RETURN, then there is really no need whatsoever for a remake. And honestly, if he's the guy behind the films now, I really don't think we'll get another film for a long time.

Exactly, Toyland. Look how long it took for Return to happen, for crying out loud. Then there's other films and things that have been 'delayed' (cancelled, forgotten, never really planned properly most likely).

I'm actually not against someone else doing their own version of SLEEPAWAY CAMP. You know, if they actually do a remake. The "transsexual twist" would be too predictable, and a remake would probably be best to try something different. Keep in mind I highly doubt the remake will have a theatrical release.

I once suggested the idea that Angela really be a girl, and it was Peter who died in the boat accident. And that she is a split personality with Peter being the "evil" side, but I guess that would be too conventional.

I'd be fine with it being direct-to-DVD or super limited like the newer Mother's Day and the Maniac remake. I don't want a rehash of the original but I don't want a lame sequel to Return either.

I don't have anything against the original, but I like the Michael Simpson films a lot more. I don't think I'll be really excited about sequel or remake news as long as Robert Hiltzik is involved.

Same here. (wary) I love the first but Return was a disaster and I have a bad feeling that any direct sequels to that will be horrible. I'd rather they just start all over again at this point.

This isn't surprising. Didn't we wait five years for Return? I won't be surprised if it gets The Survivor treatment where nothing remarkable comes out of it.

Can't you see it? The effects of cinema violence on society?

I do not want Robert touching another Sleepaway Film and I sure as hell do not want a follow up to Return. I just want to forget Return ever happened. I also don't see the point in doing a remake if it's going to pretty much be an entirely different movie, if that's the case make an original movie and don't remake it. I want my Angela damn it.

Just fucking get Michael A. Simpson, call up Pamela Springsteen(She looks great, saw a recent picture of her and even if she didn't want to return get Felissa, she'd probably be up for it), get a small crew and cast, and just make one epic return to summer camp with Angela going after facebook and instagram loving teens and dispatching them one by one in increasingly gory ways. Simple and easy. I really want to know why Berserk never happened
