The news is already getting fired up on the upcoming 2016 President election in November of 2016! and almost everybody wants Hillary Clinton to make a run for the white house, mainly because she's a Democrat and nobody wants to see a Republican for President again, and who else will be running to the white house next year?

Russia has been interfering with elections in Europe like this for ages. Most of the talk about what is going to happen next involves working with other nations to impose further sanctions. The same thing happened with China last year. They hacked us. We threatened them with economic sanctions. China ended up backing down. We also imposed sanctions after the Sony hack. If the response would involve a cyberwarfare attack, it is highly unlikely that they general public will ever be told. That's generally how cyberwarfare works. We're still not sure if the US launched an attack on North Korea after the Sony hack. Russia has also launched cyber attacks on the White House, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the State Department in the past without the US naming them or making the information publically available. They are also at least considering attacks on the US power grid and energy companies. The only reason that people were pretending they didn't know it was them from the start was that they were trying not to damage peace talks about Syria. They only really started being open about it once peace talks were falling apart. Additionally, the emphasis was on them tampering with voter registration rolls. It was also timed with a call from Secretary of State John Kerry for there to be a formal investigation into Russia's war crimes in Syria. Shit Russia has done in the last year or couple of days that has added up to a lot more talk of war than the e-mail crap: Systematically targeting hospitals in Syria, including an attack this summer on a maternity hospital Enabling the Syrian government to starve Syrians in Aleppo Refusing to take in Syrian refugees by denying that civilians were dying Using cluster munitions on Syrian civilians Using vacuum bombs on Syrian civilians Exploiting Syria to interfere in efforts against ISIS Everything about the Syrian conflict being horrific generally Deporting or allowing Uzbekistani forces to abduct people seeking asylum Attempting to crush all dissent from ethnic Crimean Tatars in Crimea Selling weapons to the Philippines Suspending a treaty about the disposal of plutonium Also, Ukraine because I'm tired after typing all of the rest of this and want to talk about movies Everything isn't about the election. Also, no one actually wants to go to war with Russia. |

And currently, all these hacks have actually done is expose lying assholes for being lying assholes. Obama, Clinton, and Co. have been talking this election, not what has occurred in Europe. All they've done is bitch about them "influencing the election." Not everything is about the election, but, officially, this most certainly is seeing as they have directly accused Russia of influencing our election with wikileaks. It has been outright called an "attack on our democracy." This cyberstrike is about the election. An election, mind you, which the democratic party has been more or less openly rigging (RE: Bernie Sanders), one in which we have yet to be provided any substantial proof that Russia is actually behind the wikileaks in question, and one where all that has actually occurred is lying assholes are being exposed as lying assholes (and potentially being exposed as corrupt lying assholes). As said, these people have more than once directly tied Russia to these Wikileaks directed at Hillary Clinton. They are not talking about what Russia has or not has done in Europe, they are talking about what Russia is (supposedly) doing here without providing actual proof Russia is even behind these leaks in question. The only way in which these leaks actually have any influence on this election is by proving Hillary is a calculating, lying, homophobic, two-faced asshole whose campaign management is rife with racism, Islamophobia, anti-Catholic comments, and attacks on groups who don't share her stances (anti-Fracking, for example, where she said environmentalists need to get a life). You're also incorrect that no one wants to be instigating a cyberwar with Russia, there's actual news articles about them retaliating with a cyberattack/cyberstrike on the Russsian government in retaliation for these wikileaks. Not any kind of an economic sanction with other nations. Multiple government officials have been making comments abut this being a retaliation or sending a message to Russia. They are looking to instigate Cyberwarfare (and a cyberwar can very easily become an actual war) We have quotes from government officials confirming this, from NBC no less.
These people are absolutely looking to instigate a conflict on flimsy evidence. As said, we've yet to even be shown actual proof it's Russia. This is also a really convenient deflection from the horrible stuff Ms. Clinton has been actually saying. How conveniently timed for her. Obviously I think Russia and Putin are absolutely terrible, but this ISN'T acceptable. I think we are stuck with two horrid candidate choices, which is why I was content to not vote and let things fall where they will, but if Hillary wants to pursue any kind of warfare with Russia (cyber or otherwise) and Trump doesn't, I don't have much of a choice in terms of who to actually vote for. Both are awful, but I'll take the one who isn't actively instigating any form of warfare. And a Cyberwar is a war, just on a different front, and it's one that can rapidly escalate into an actual war since Russia is not taking this lightly. Not to mention even if we do nothing, we're still pissing off Russia for no actual reason. In which case, why are we pissing them off? Edited by Repo, Oct 17 2016, 02:49 AM.

Context exists even if it isn't covered in specific statements and articles. Russia is taking steps to establish themselves as a much bigger threat than in recent years and our relationship with them has gone up in flames. The election is only a tiny sliver of that, and people in the government have been talking about that. These statements have all been carefully timed to be part of the larger discussion about Russia that is happening globally. I don't think the timing is a coincidence. Hillary Clinton's campaigning indicates that she is pretty confident that she will win the election at this point. They have been saying it was Russia since July. If the reason for this talk was the election, why not do this when the race was closer? No one is particularly optimistic, but one of the current goals is to reach an agreement about Syria by the end of the month when people in Aleppo are going to run out of supplies. Talks aren't going well, but they have recently scrapped everything and started looking at new plans. The US and GB are already talking about increasing economic sanctions because of Syria. (They're also making empty Biden-like threats at the same time, but Biden is a lot more convincing than John Kerry at blustering.) The EU's next summit is in a few days. I'm not even so much addressing the issue of the election leaks as wanting to put the things that have been reported in proportion. I do not think that the general consensus is pointing towards a conflict over the e-mail leaks being a source of major concern. That article emphasized the angle of people pushing for a cyber attack, but we're in a stage when people are going to be talking about a lot of things. The NYT has had some articles with good quotes from experts describing the different stances. Poking around and considering an attack happens all the time on both sides. NBC has also reported that this exact scenario has happened before and people on both sides cooled down without anything happening. Also, Donald Trump is going to have no choice but continue poking at Russia's security. Even Mike Pence thinks that it was Russia and that there should be consequences. The United States is too vulnerable to a cyber attack to risk it. It's something that is going to have to always be on the table, especially when Russia is being very antagonistic. Even friendly nations poke around like that. |

I am so tired of getting calls from the Hillary Clinton campaign checking to make sure that I didn't forget where my polling place was since they called the day before. I also canceled a therapy session, because the last place I want to be is in a waiting room filled with immigrants and people with trauma histories. It's going to be like we're all waiting for the apocalypse, even though they discretely removed all magazines with anything about politics. |

I had no intention of voting this year, but I got to feeling guilty last night. "What if my refusal to vote results in Trump winning by one?" That kind of thing. So I went ahead and voted today. Not for that orange idiot fuck-wad, of course. But not for the blonde lying fuck-wad, either. Go, Green. |

I'm just really tired of elections these days always being about the lesser of two evils. It's supposed to be about who's best suited for the job, not who's the least worst suited, y'know? I hate that that is the world we live in now. It can really suck, being a principlist; you frequently find yourself disappointed. |

I think the third parties should have planned ahead to pick a decent candidate. Jill Stein is an impressively useless, unimpressive, and incompetent. Gary Johnson isn't the worst possible candidate. He's a bit of a nut and has no intention of coming up with realistic policy ideas, but that doesn't really matter that much in this election. He is terrible at being a politician, though. Still seems like a nice guy. |

She's who I voted for. ![]() But I'm pretty certain Hilary is our next president. I prefer to think, maybe foolishly, that Trump supporters woke up this morning with the realization that that particular, bizarre social experiment has ran its course, and that it's time to get serious. |
