“Goodnight Mommy takes place in an isolated home and centers on a pair of twins whose mother returns home from the hospital. But with a bandaged up face and off-liter behavior, the twins begin to think that perhaps this isn’t their mother after all.”

It's Austria's submission for Best Foreign Language Film. It's a weird award, with strange requirements and rules. It's technically awarded to the entire country that the movie comes from, and each nation only submits one movie. Each country has a group of some sort that chooses the film.

I really enjoyed this. It did a great job of maintaining tension and atmosphere throughout the film, even when it takes a bit of a break for a somewhat goofy scene. The child actors were really great. The actress that plays the mother is also very good, but the movie spends most of the time with the boys. There is definitely a Funny Games comparison to be made, but I like that it's more subtle. The score and sound design were great. I thought it had a really good balance between foreshadowing the ending and making it seem possible that just about anything could happen at the end of the movie. The only complaint I have is that it is a bit repetitive in the first half, and it returns to cockroaches a bit too often. I would have liked a wider variety of creepy stuff.

I don't think it's getting an Academy Award, but I generally think more countries should submit horror movies instead of Oscar bait stuff. I definitely appreciate that they went for a bold choice.

I see that 1 person has seen it so far on here and liked it. My wife was just talking about this film and I saw the trailer for it a couple weeks ago on youtube I think or some horror facebook page.

Any other thoughts so far?

It says on imdb 6.7 rating but I don't go by imdb ratings.

I've tried watching it twice now, and both times it put me to sleep. I'll keep at it, though. One of these days I'll watch it all the way through, you just wait and see.

^ It seems like one of those artsy indie horror films that are really all about build-up and are kind of slow-burners.

Thing is, normally I love those type of slow-burn horror flicks, where there's more focus on suspense and tension than non-stop gore and action. But for whatever reason I'm having trouble getting into this one. I'll try it again at some point, though.

Yeah. The film looks very weird. It looks great, no doubt, but it seems like the type of film I have to be in the right type of mood to get into. Weird-scary is a very interesting type of horror that I have to be in the right mood to enjoy.

Hopefully I'll be watching it the next time Robby's over. We're both all (goo) over the trailers and whatnot.

The trailer is just disturbing and weird. I feel like that's gonna be the type of horror this is. Not jumpy scary, not absolutely terrifying... But weird, disturbing, and uncomfortable.

It is a struggle right now to not say anything that might give away what happens in the last third of the movie.

So it's a good thing we didn't watch this since it's randomly playing at a theater less than ten minutes from my house! (goo) It's the same one that got Stoker, The Babadook, It Follows, The Green Inferno, and What We Do In The Shadows<3. Robby and I are seeing it on the 11th.

I will. (goo) I'm guessing Vanessa saw it already too. Hopefully I won't have a hard time coming up with a way to say what I thought of this without spoiling the whole thing. If all else fails, I'll just put my full review in spoiler tags and just say "This was really good" or "This sucked" along with my 'number rating' outside of the spoiler tags and you guys can just read the review after watching the movie. :P

I don't think this came to any theater here, sadly. I'll just on demand it when I get paid.

I wrote a little review. I need someone to watch it so we can talk about the last forty-five minutes or so of the movie.

Domestic: $515,342

Not too bad for being shown in only 86 theaters.

What the...? It just randomly jumped up by $135,000. And it's already been out for a month, lol.

^They've been doubling the number of theaters it's showing in each weekend, so it'll keep going up for a while. When you checked it last time, they hadn't actually added in the profits from the first weekend in 86 theaters. $515K is what it had earned before this weekend, when it was still only showing in 43.

Oh, good<3. I hope this makes quite a bit. Maybe if it makes enough, theaters will show more Horror movies from other countries. I was really happy that when I saw it, it was subtitled and not dubbed.

I'm going to be posting my review tonight or tomorrow, probably.
