“Goodnight Mommy takes place in an isolated home and centers on a pair of twins whose mother returns home from the hospital. But with a bandaged up face and off-liter behavior, the twins begin to think that perhaps this isn’t their mother after all.”

I'm starting to lean toward it having a damn good chance of getting a Golden Globe nomination. An Oscar nom would still be a long-shot, since it would only have a chance at getting one of the special committee's nominations, and there's only three of those and it's probably still too violent for them. The Golden Globes like nominating the occasional popular genre film, though.

I forgot. Is this movie on VOD? I don't think this is showing in any theater around, but I will for sure, look it up.

It was pushed back to November 24th. It was supposed to be out on VOD this month, but I think they pushed it back when they decided to expand the theatrical release.

Wait another week or so before trying to find another way to watch it, Aaron. It just might show up at your theater. Remember, Stoker, The Babadook, What We Do In The Shadows, etc. didn't show up at my theater until they had already been out for several weeks and Goodnight Mommy just got to my theater 4 or 5 days ago so I wouldn't be surprised if it pops up near you before the end of the month. (thumbsup)

And I love that poster. It's one of my favorites for this<3.

So this was even better than I thought it would be. It would honestly be perfect to watch alongside The Babadook since there are quite a few similarities between the two of them. Knowing what those similarities are could wreck the hell out of this so I'll tag it;

In a way, this is much more extreme and unsettling than The Babadook was, though I'm not too sure if I can say it is a BETTER film. it definitely didn't have me as emotional as The Babadook did, nor was it as creepy but it was just as well made and just as well written. It's a very gorgeous movie for the most part and despite the bleakness and how plain a lot of the sets are, everything stood out at all times. The cinematography was mostly great. Since this focuses on only three characters, the conflict is mostly simple and there aren't tons of complications thrown our way. Some might see this as being TOO slow but I would have to disagree with that. The pacing was mostly perfect.

This relies on mood, build up, and dread more than anything but the last third of the film veers into pretty gnarly, horrifying territory. I'll leave that at that unless of course you want to be spoiled (shame on you!!)

The twist is mostly obvious, unfortunately. But this wasn't about building up to a super shocking, game changing twist. It presented the twist almost...casually, which was pretty cool. It was more about what followed the twist and what happened in the 15-20 minutes before the reveal than the twist itself. It's almost like the makers wanted to make it somewhat obvious so people would be like "HA! I knew it! LAME!!" only to be suckerpunched by the crazy finale. (lol) I like to think that anyway. It works better that way.

So yes, please, please see this. My only big complaint has more to do with the lighting and the subtitles (WHY have WHITE subtitles over a pure white/bright yellow image on the screen?!) than the film itself. I had to squint to make out the subtitles and I was constantly afraid I was going to miss something important. Thankfully I didn't. (lol)

7.5/10 quality, 8/10 entertainment. Pretty awesome film for the most part.

Ooh yay. This is playing in 90 theaters now (four more than a few days ago). Kind of surprised that the number of theaters is actually increasing.

I still can't get over how much the trailer just gets under my skin, man. I cannot wait to see this. I don't think it's playing anywhere near here, though, so I'll just have to wait for the blu-ray.

(Is this film worth buying a blu-ray for or is a DVD fine, Jonathan?)

I'm honestly not sure. I haven't compared the features yet (I don't even think it's out yet but I could be mistaken). I'll let you know when I find out. :P I have a feeling this will be one of those that doesn't get too much either way. I HOPE I'm mistaken.

It's not out yet. I just meant. You are the one who always tells me if something is visually-worth getting a blu-ray or not. I wasn't referring to the features, but to the picture quality and look of the film.

LIke how with It Follows, you told me to get the DVD, not the blu-ray, because the heightened quality might take away some of the drowned-out quality that It Follows was supposed to have. Or the 80s b movie quality in Lost After Dark.

If you prefer dvd, which I think you mentioned before, it isn't something that would look considerably better in high def. I'd compare the look and set design to Funny Games, and something that is already very light and crisp doesn't really get that much out of the better quality, in my opinion.

Oh! Well when it comes to picture quality, I'm with Vanessa. I think it's gorgeous as it is. DVD quality is enough.

I'm hoping there's a BluRay/DVD combo pack just in case the Blu-Ray does end up with more special features than the DVD. That way, I can just watch the features on the Blu-Ray and the movie itself on DVD.

The combopacks are my favorite. :D I feel ripped off when I don't get a combopack.

I ended up buying the DVD, as it was a cheap ten-dollar price at Walmart on Friday.

This was a pretty decent movie. I think both sides kind of over or under sold it. Those who hated it seemed to be overly adamant about how horrible it was, and those who loved it seemed adamant about how groundbreakingly brilliant it was. I'd say it's never. It was a fantastic horror effort, though, regardless of it being oversold by some critics.

I think the heart of the film lies in the performances of Lukas and Elias Schwarz. It could just be that they work well together due to their deep twin-sibling connection, but I feel like both of them have wonderful careers ahead of them in the future. They played off each other's vulnerabilities and strengths perfectly. Lukas seemed to be the "strong" one, the one who always comforts Elias, the one who always has the ideas of what to do next. Elias seemed like the weaker sibling, the more vulnerable, the more innocent. Both actors play these roles absolutely perfectly, and I found myself deeply sympathetic for both of them up until the credits for the film started to roll.

Susanne Wuest also did a fantastic job with the character of Mother. Throughout most of the movie, she displayed a wonderful number of emotions. She is terrifying in one moment, portraying mother as an abusive monster who is completely willing to beat the shit out of her son for showing sensitivity or fear, yet two seconds later, she'll be crying her eyes out, garnering sympathy from the audience, even if the audience doesn't understand how they are feeling sympathy for someone the sons believe to be probably a monster of some kind.

The best thing about the film, though, is the sense of dread that is just... There... Throughout the film. Nothing truly terrifying or even scary happens in the film, but I found myself just feeling almost sick while watching, even from the first twenty minutes of the movie.

The film's atmosphere was also very well-done. The cinematography was absolutely gorgeous. Bright hues and colors mixed with dark, subdued shadows make for a visually stunning feast of a film.

Most people have either loved or hated the twist at the end.

My BIGGEST issue with the third act is

I also think the use of Lullaby and Goodnight in the beginning scene and end scene of the film was wonderfully poignant, and the very last shot of

Overall, a great film. Perhaps a little oversold, but still pretty great.

Grade: A-

Woo! I'm glad you really liked it<3. Like I've said, I like the twist and how it was somewhat obvious (surprise!). It's rare for me to not mind an obvious twist but it was executed well here and didn't DWELL on the twist but on what came before and after the reveal. Even without the twist, the film could have easily played out almost the exact same way, which is why I think it works but also why I can understand why some may see it as unnecessary.

Well, I mean, even with the twist, there are still some unanswered questions about the mother, that I mention in my review.

Apparently, it's going to theaters there, according to that trailer? Even though it's already on DVD here in the States... *shrug*
