Still reeling from her parents divorce, April (Brittany Allen) is dragged back to the vacation cabin she spent fond summers at as a child accompanied by a group of friends. Her trip down memory lane takes a dramatic and terrifying turn when a fireball descends from the sky and explodes in the nearby woods. Lead by her boyfriend (Freddie Stroma), the group venture out toward the crash site and discover the remnants of a ship from another planet along with footprints that suggest its alien occupants are still alive. The college friends soon find themselves caught in the middle of something bigger and more terrifying than they ever thought possible.

This seems to be the latest upcoming release with tons of buzz. I'm sure I'll see it, but I'm already getting a bit tired of hearing about it.

Really? More Alien movies that are probably going to be boring or lame.

Emily Perkins is in this! I was just wondering if she had been in anything lately.

It isn't bad, but I wouldn't rush to see this. There are a couple of good scenes, and there are a few pretty great moments. The main issue is the script, which doesn't really manage to get the tone right. By the final act, it is pretty clear what they are going for, but the first half hour is pretty tedious. It sets up all kinds of relationship drama and gives plenty of time for the annoying character to irritate everyone with his "humor," but I still have no idea how old the main characters are supposed to be. It looks good, but I can't help but think that some of the music budget could have went into effects instead. Most of the main cast wasn't great, but I did really enjoy Michael Ironside's character. Emily Perkins is only in one scene, even if it is a good scene.

The X-Files reference at the end was kind of cute.

Ah, so around average then? I can live with that since well, it's pretty rare for a movie of this kind to really blow me away and stick with me for a really long time. It still sounds pretty decent though so chances are it'll be yet another movie I watch in November.

The main thing that went wrong was that they were going for a Cabin in the Woods-esque satire tone, but it didn't really work out. Other than that, it was okay. If they had trimmed the beginning it probably would have been above-average, because things did pick up a lot after the aliens showed up.

Ah. I'll just wait until then to watch it. Pretty sure the 12th is one of the days Robby will be over here so that works.

I'm surprised that this is getting a really fancy Shout! Factory release.

What are the features? I might buy it if I can find it for under $10. This is good enough to own but not good enough to spend like $25 on.

Robby and I watched this the night before last. I wasn't all that excited for it but the opening managed to really rope me in. It was a basic, simple scenario (panicked girl running to a gas station for help when bad things happen) but they made it work and I loved the ending of the opening. :P I recognized a few of the people in this. Melanie Papalia ftw! I loved her in The Den and she was one of the only good things about Smiley but this wasn't her best character. It's always nice seeing Michael Ironside and it was a hoot seeing him as the crazy old pot growing conspiracy theorist in the woods. I'm not sure why they got Emily Perkins for this since her character was sort of a 'nothing character.'

I liked April even if she was a big of a clichéd lead. The whole

thing was SO been-there-done-that and it was only semi believable here. Kyle was a typical secondary lead who stopped being interesting after the first half hour. He was okay though, I guess. Lex was really pointless. I guess she was meant to be this film's Jules (the whole cast and structure felt like Cabin In The Woods with aliens) or Natalie (Evil Dead) but she wasn't as fun as Jules and she was somehow even more quiet and shafted screentime-wise than Natalie. Meh. I liked Melanie a lot. She was quirky, funny, adorable, and mostly likeable...but she was a bit stupid. I wish they had actually revealed her

because as it is, it just seems like a STUPID mistake. Seth was a total douchebag but it's always nice seeing Jesse Moss (Final Destination 3, Tucker And Dale Vs Evil). I don't like that Jesse keeps getting asshole roles, lol. He was annoying, over the top, and randomly mean to the others when the shit hit the fan.

I liked the sheriff a lot. I hated his deputy. And

This film is pretty light on atmosphere, suspense, and gore but it was still pretty fun even if it ended up feeling sort of hollow. The last five minutes were totally awesome though. That part took me by surprise and gave the film a bit of gallows humor like Wolf Creek 2 had. As in;

It was pretty enjoyable but nothing amazing.

6/10 quality, 6.5-7/10 entertainment.

I watched this yesterday, and I pretty much agree with you, though I didn't like the ending as much as you did. For me, it just doesn't work, and kind of ruined the film for me in fact. If it weren't for the ending, this would be a mild recommendation, but as it stands, I felt cheated. I did like April and Kyle, though, and Seth was a great asshole who got what he had coming. I liked about ninety percent of this movie, as cliched as it was, but I just couldn't get past the ending.

My full review is here.

Now, for my spoilery thoughts.

I thought this was a pretty fun movie. It did remind me a lot of Cabin in the Woods, but with Alien stuff. I checked this one out mostly because I'm a big fan of Grave Encounters and was hoping for something similar but with aliens. And while I didn't really get what I wanted, I did enjoy the movie for the most of it - going in with relatively low expectations.
