Deadline reports that Magnet Releasing will now back XX, a new horror anthology with a gender twist – all segments will be helmed by female directors and will star female leads, as previously reported.

Karyn Kusama (Girlfight, Jennifer’s Body), Mary Harron (American Psycho, pictured), Jennifer Lynch (Hiss, Surveillance), and Jovanka Vuckovic have been tapped to direct the project, which is heading for completion in 2015 with producer Dwjuan Fox overseeing.

I think it would've been more unique if it were all female directors with all MALE leads. After all, most Horror films (even many shorts in anthologies) feature female leads as it is.

It's still not done. Mary Harron dropped out and Annie Clark, the musician St. Vincent, is supposed to be making her segment this spring.

They announced only a few days ago that St. Vincent was directing a segment, and they haven't started filming that yet. I wouldn't expect a release date too soon.

First of all, I just want to say that this thread was a bitch to find, since 'XX' isn't accepted in the search feature (coffee)

Anyway, it'll be out February 17 (love)

With that release date it looks like they're trying to be 2017's Southbound.

I'm a little concerned that the lineup kept changing, but I am hoping that it isn't a bad sign. Mary Harron did sign on to direct The Family (which sounds amazing), so I guess she might just have had a scheduling conflict.

Looks great. Hopefully this becomes a horror anthology franchise.

I liked it. It is very consistent. I am actually having a really hard time picking a favorite. Each short is very good. Two of them could have easily been a full-length film and would have been a pretty great one. It has a stop-motion wraparound that is very cool.

"The Box" provides a new spin on the familiar story. I do think that the ending might not be to everyone's tastes. I think that it perfectly fits the short's themes and works for the format, but I think some people would want more answers.

I like that it is a funny segment, but "The Birthday Party" could have used a bit more story. It seems a bit stretched out to be as long as the other shorts. The style was really great. It had a slightly toned down 90s Tim Burton thing going on. Melanie Lynskey is perfect casting, too. I don't think anyone could have done the role as well.

"Don’t Fall" is the most traditional of the shorts, but it is well made and adds variety. It is completely packed with scares, action, and gore after everything is set up. It has me wanting Roxanne Benjamin to make a full film even more than I already was. She is great at pacing.

"Her Only Living Son" has a predictable story, but everyone in the cast gives complex performances that add depth. There are several story threads that could have been expanded into a subplot in a longer film, and I think that it gives the short the feeling of having a very full story despite the short running time. Karyn Kusama is also a really good director. I like how she frames her shots.

This had better win one of the audience reaction awards for 2017, because there are a lot of people slagging this for having all female directors. You have to be an utter sexist idiot to not see how a movie like this is necessary.

Also, I am tired of people's reactions to horror films making me this mad.

Caught this on Netflix today. I am quite pleased to say this is quite a good anthology film. Very consistent in tone. Difficult to do when you have other directors in the mix. The weakest one for me would have to be Annie Clark's (St. Vincent's) contribution, The Birthday Party. It had potential, but the best part happens at the end when the intertitles pop up onscreen, IMO. I would love to see her grow as a director though.

Segments:

The Box
I wasn't sure about the narration, but it works, for the most part. The acting is okay. Not the best. The kids do a decent enough job. It's frightening what happens to the family.

The Birthday Party
As I said before, this is probably the weakest entry. Not that Melanie Lynskey doesn't do a good job with her part, there just isn't much for her to do, to be honest. It's the comedic portion of the anthology, which is fine to have. I just wish the ending was different. It also seemed like Annie Clark wanted to make a Tim Burton film, and at the same time something else on top of that. So, there's a clash of style in this one that none of the other entries seem to have.

Don't Fall
Strong short. Doesn't hurt that Angela Trimbur is in this segment either. It could have been a tad longer, but it works as it is. You get enough sense of the characters, I just wish we had a bit more. I think the lead character and Trimbur's character were a couple. I can't be sure though.
Spoiler: click to toggle

Her Only Living Son
This is the strongest entry in this film, by far. That feeling of "what did I do wrong," "what did I do right" as a parent is frightening. I can't even phantom that horror. Only empathize.
Spoiler: click to toggle

Overall a solid B. Great stop-motion wraparound, more so transition shots, as well. Reminded me of some of Jan Švankmajer's work. Absolute plus.

Her Only Living Son > Don't Fall > The Box > The Birthday Party

Watched it last night, and I found it to be kind of underwhelming (wary) Aside from 'The Box', none of the stories really held my attention. It was nice seeing Melanie Lynskey and Angela Trimbur again though. I guess I was expecting alot more from this.

Speaking of 'The Box', I want to be at their house for dinner every night, they were eating good (coffee)
