Horror Quote Of The Moment

Welcome to Under The Morgue.

We have sections for each decade of film, from the 1910s onward, as well as sections for 10+ major franchises, close to 50 'smaller' franchises (containing five entries or less), creative writing, independent filmmaking, photography, music, Non-Horror films and TV shows, forum games, and boredom busters, and to top it all off there's an IM shoutbox at the bottom of the page for random chat. From the tame and 'kid sister friendly' to the psychological and mindbending to cheesy splatter flicks to hardcore torture-oriented horror, there's something here for everyone, so why not dive in?

What are some of your favorite tropes, motifs, conventions, or cliches that show up in horror movies?

I'm a sucker for final girls, mother figures and bitchy characters. Secondary villains are always welcome, especially in slasher films.

Meanstreaks are one of the best things about bodycount horror films to me.

I'm a big fan of movies that introduce tons of odd characters even if they don't contribute anything to the movie other than making the audience uncomfortable.

^ Yup.

Lol, more movies need to be like Twin Peaks when it comes to characters.

Horror Doesn't Settle for Simple Tuesday: It's a TV Tropes link, but it is one of my favorite lists of movies with a holiday theme.

I like the familiar characters in slasher genres

i.e: the final girl, the slut, the jock, etc.

Especially when there are small twists that make them unique to that particular movie/series. I also like sequels that reference the original while also expanding on the world the first movie introduced.

- POV shots
- Cold Openings
- Killer reveals
- Ambiguous endings
- Effective jump scares
- Rainstorms
- Holidays as a setting
- Pets surviving
- Not being able to get away from the killer quick enough (i.e., car stalls but then kicks into gear in the nick of time)
- Harbingers (e.g., Ralph from Friday the 13th)
- Smart final girls and tough villians

Final girls. I know the idea is overdone, but I love them and their epic fights with the villain at the end!
