This was a pretty bizarre, darkly comedic little movie that I didn't know much about before seeing it. Definition of 'blind buy' this was, thanks to a $5.00 pricetag at FYE. Robby and I were both pretty surprised by this. At times it was VERY story driven, focusing on the inner workings of both the chef and the critic - who both had excellent backstories - and at times, it was pretty grisly and meanspirited. The musical score had a lovely, Japanese-inspired flair to it which I dug, and the location brought back memories of Funny Games for some reason. Dug that as well.
Despite the 100+ minute runtime, this flowed by rather quickly and was never dull despite the fact that the bodycount was super small, the gore was minimal, and the action setpieces were spaced far apart. This relied on the characters alone to be honest...and all four of the leads were watchable, developed, and really interesting, as I've pretty much said before.

Definitely worth a watch for the interactions, 'cooking games', and the sudden, unexpected and fitting conclusion. Oh, and there's an extremely bloody scene partway into this that had me floored because of who was involved. HOLYFUCKDUDE. O_O

7/10 quality. 8+/10 entertainment. Definitely one of the better films I've seen this month.

Oh, and Amy Seimetz was great as always here (love)

It was. Its been almost a month since I saw it but a lot of it is still really fresh in my mind. The acting here was pretty great;not one bad or even so-so performance. Everyone managed to impress me here (special shout outs to the two leads as well as Larry Fessenden and the always-great Amy Seimetz<3). While not particularly gory, some parts packed a punch and were pretty meanspirited. The locations were gorgeous, the deaths (very few but oh well) were very well handled and one actually made my jaw drop because of how ballsy they were with the timing. LOVE it when movies kill major characters off in the way this one did!
Some parts were pretty suspenseful, the story was not anything new but the 'cooking/critic/chef' aspect kept it fresh enough so it never got boring and it rarely felt 'been there, saw this a million times.' I just wish the big blowout at the end had lasted longer since that was all AWESOME. There was only one character I sided with 100% of the time and that was Katherine who was very sympathetic and totally fucked over by the whole situation (and just as fucked over by J.T. who was a really well handled, developed character who was sympathetic and hateable in equal amounts). How Katherine played into it all was great! Larry did a really good job as the 'investigator' (think of him as being this film's Arbogast) and Peter was a deliciously cuckoo 'villain' who I actually identified with.

Good work from all involved imo.

7/10 quality. 7.5-8/10 entertainment.
