![]() Journalist Jenny Lerner is assigned to look into the background of Secretary Alan Rittenhouse who abruptly resigned from government citing his wife's ill health. She learns from his secretary that Rittenhouse was having an affair with someone named Ellie but when she confronts him, his strange reaction leads her to reconsider her story. In fact, a meteor, discovered the previous year by high school student Leo Biederman and astronomer Dr. Marcus Wolf, is on a collision course with the Earth, an Extinction Level Event. A joint US-Russian team is sent to destroy the meteor but should it fail, special measures are to be put in place to secure the future of mankind. As the space mission progresses, many individuals deal with their fears and ponder their future. |

I've seen this many, many times and some parts still get me pretty weepy on the inside. While it's not as 'big', epic, mean, and action packed as other film of its kind, it really clicks with me in a way that many disaster films (which I still gush over) don't; I actually love and hate many of the characters - and there are dozens in this one, and yes, plenty end up dead. I showed this to Robby earlier this month and halfway into it, the POWER WENT OUT! Two hours later, we started it again from where we left off and it was as if we hadn't hit the 'pause' button for a second; we were still into it (then again, I may have been because I have it pretty much memorized right down to when most pieces of the musical score start and stop). While millions upon millions have seen it (it's made half a billion dollars...in 1998 alone) it seems that most people haven't seen it, which is a damn shame since in my opinion, it really is one of the best of its kind. And I still get chills when Jenny runs away with the fucking kid to the rooftop...and when the water comes...and when pretty much every death occurs...and when we see the Twin Towers get impacted by 'something' (!) and when.... 8/10 quality. 9/10 entertainment. One of my favorites<3. |

I remember talking to John on the phone about this movie. I really didn't care for it lol. |

I'm not a big fan of disaster movies, but this is one that I like. The main reason is the cast and characters. I still remember seeing it in theaters, so I'm surprised that it doesn't seem like that many people have seen it. |

Yeah I hardly know anyone who saw it without me recommending it to them first which is weird since it made a TON of money and was a pretty big deal when it came out. |

I still remember the theater I saw it in being really packed, because I had to sit in a booster seat to see, which rarely happened since I was a tall kid. |

Yeah it made $349,464,664 (yay, BoxOfficeMojo) so its weird that a lot of people my age and older have never even heard of it lol. I guess it was overshadowed by Armageddon? |

I guess that Armageddon was also shown a lot more on television, which might have something to do with it. I remember it always being on TBS or FX, but Deep Impact was rarer. |

I've only ever seen this on VHS and DVD, lol. Oddly enough, Armageddon is on TV all the time and the DVD is pretty cheap but I still haven't seen that. And I just checked and it made $200,000,000 more than this did. Woah. |

I tend to like Deep Impact more than Armageddon due to Deep Impact feeling like it had genuine characters to root for while Armageddon had the glitzy look to it with caricatures of people that you never truly feel you can back up. My favorite character in Deep Impact to follow was Jenny and Spoiler: click to toggle
