![]() It is the dawn of World War III. In mid-western America, a group of teenagers bands together to defend their town, and their country, from invading Soviet forces. |

I saw this for the first time like ten years ago and really didn't see what the big deal was. For some reason, I always remembered it as not being as serious as it should've been and having too many survivors. I know. Insert the 'lolwut pear' meme here. Someone, please. This had a lot of pretty gnarly scenes in it, with the opening, the tank scene, and the scene with those genuinely intimidating 'helicopter fighter planes' (don't know the proper name for them) being my three favorite scenes. I lost count of how many people died before it hit the thirty minute mark. For a movie that has a "Carnage Counter" (yes, seriously) on the DVD and so many onscreen gunshot kills and some 'mean moments', this somehow scraped by with a PG/PG13 rating! If it'd been marketed as a Horror, I guarantee it would've been slapped with an R and protested. This IS 1984, year of the heavily hated (by critics and moms) Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter and Silent Night Deadly Night, after all! Of course it's not SUPER graphic but it was violent enough to have an R rating but not SO violent that it required one. *shrug*The characters were a mixed bag. Some of the guys sort of blended in together (maybe there were two or three too many? We did have almost a dozen male characters after all) and the two girls (yes, only two, unfortunately) didn't really get to shine until the last half hour or so (LOVED how crafty they were and Toni's bomb stuff was terrific!). I didn't dislike anyone other than the villains, and even they were interesting enough to keep me from flat out hating them or cringing whenever they were onscreen. I almost wish that we'd gotten a sequel/spinoff to this that featured a different group of people in a different part of the country. That could've been pretty cool. But oh well. As it is, I like this but it could've used fewer male characters, more female characters, and fewer sluggish moments (some of the dialogue scenes brought it to a screeching halt but then it picked up again after, thankfully). 7.5/10 quality 7/10 entertainment. |

I liked this, but I wouldn't call it one of my favorite action movies or anything though. |
