![]() Red Dawn is a 2012 American war film directed by Dan Bradley. The screenplay by Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore is based on the 1984 film of the same name. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The film centers on a group of young people who defend their hometown from a North Korean invasion. |

Even before I watched this, it already had a whopping FOUR things going against it. 1. The poster makes it look like a bunch of dolled up, kickass adults instead of average kids. 2. I know it's a mainstream action movie, but I really don't like seeing Josh Peck trying to play a teenager. Plus there were too many 'names' in this for it to have the same feel as the original (just average kids in a gnarly situation). I know many of the people in the original became big stars but - correct me if I'm wrong - that was made BEFORE they hit it big. Same doesn't go for this. They were all already established. 3. I saw the runtime. It is a full 22 minutes shorter than the original. It is only 1 hour 33 minutes INCLUDING credits. Not good. 4. This is a small one and doesn't even count tbh, but I hate when remakes are released on random years. Shouldve been released in either 2009 (25th anniversary) or 2014 (30th anniversary). Go ahead and scrape off this complaint. ![]() ANYWAY; This was a fun, basic action movie with a handful of okay characters, some admittedly great action scenes (that still didn't push the envelope as much as I hoped for though), and a brisk, quick pace. That's pretty much it. Oh, and it looked pretty. *shrug* Now onto the bad. It was almost TOO fast paced. Yes, fast paced is better than being boring but when it rushes through a DEATH scene and kills a somewhat major character without even showing us more than their dead hand sticking out from other a vehicle and when the rest of the characters never mention him/her again for the remainder of the film I cannot help but feel some heavy, important stuff was cut out of it. Either that, or they were just plain lazy from the get-go. Unfortunately, this sort of thing happens quite often. Characters disappear, reappear, die for no reason, are introduced for no reason, and fade in and out of the story and action. Remember how Dawn Of The Dead (2004) had that issue? Well here it was worse. Dawn of The Dead is a great, gripping film with a properly long runtime and plenty of GOOD characters for us to focus on while the others are just there to entertain us briefly and then die. Red Dawn (2012) on the other hand is NOT a great film. It's just average (but entertaining!). And the bad characters, annoying caracters and ultimately POINTLESS (with a capital 'fuck off') characters outnumber the good characters. Jed was my favorite. Likeable, heroic, sexy. He was every nice 'action hero' stereotype rolled into one for the most part and he worked. Matt was fucking terrible. Josh Peck gave a decent performance but even that couldn't save Matt as a character. Stupid, random, the king of bad decisions (HURGH HURGH let me put the whole fucking group at risk to rescue some blond chick I like who doesn't have a purpose in the film!) and needed to check his attitude. Pete turning into a villain for no reason was random. Didn't buy it. Pointless, especially since ANOTHER guy in the group turned into a villain too. So what was the point of Pete? N-O-T-H-I-N-G. I forgot who Greg even was until Spoiler: click to toggle Danny and Julie were background characters who had nothing to do at all. Danny seemed to only be there to be suspicious. Daryl was annoying, too quiet, and was just there for a 'twist.' Toni was good here; definitely my second favorite next to Jed, but even SHE wasn't better than the original version of the character. Tanner, Hoges and Smith were likeable and fun but introduced FAR too late into the film (and here they were supposed to represent a charater in the original who took up A BIG part of it). Everyone else mostly sucked including Erica who was beyond forgettable. Oh well. This could've been BETTER than the original but instead it was just half as good, lol. It was enjoyable and I DID like it at times and fun but definitely not a milestone and definitely not something I can see gaining a huge following. 6/10 quality. 6/10 entertainment. Probably being generous, haha. |

Surprisingly a lot of fun here with this one really taking the premise from the original into far more action-packed realms by upping the action considerably. We get a ton of frantic shoot-outs, bombings, chases and gun battles that range from decent to quite exciting, which is what's needed in an action movie to keep things moving along nicely. The finale in particular which is the final brawl in the police station with all sorts of shootouts, fist-fights and exchanges makes for a bullet-flying, explosion-happy sequence that's highly enjoyable and cements this as quite exciting and enjoyable. While the plot is highly underwhelming and the plan by the Koreans is highly suspect beyond them being the go-to-bastards at the moment so this is highly topical like the original, and the PG-13 rating does hurt this from really selling itself the way it could've been, there's much worse ones out there. |

Do illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup? Some people are like slinkies: not good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one falls down the stairs. My review blog: http://donshorrormovieblog.blogspot.com/ | |

You should. There's some good action scenes and it's okay for the most part (perhaps I was a bit harsh in my review?) but it's not as good as the original.

It was okay, but I didn't appreciate the cliffhanger. It was clear from the beginning this would have no sequel. |
