Ten stories will be woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens, and axe murderers appear for one night only to terrorize unsuspecting residents.

No, don't get me wrong. I'm really looking forward to this. We have three dudes I dig on board: Mike Mendez, Lucky McKee, and Darren Lynn Bousman, which means we'll have a short with campy, ridiculous humor, a short with overt man-hating feminism, and a short with slut-shaming misogyny.

So this is only 1 hour 32 minutes, including opening and closing credits. (wary)

That means each segment is probably going to be a maximum of 8 minutes long.

Eh. I'll give it a chance. Remember that Trick 'r Treat was barely above 80 minutes, and it had several intertwining stories... But probably not nearly as much as Tales of Halloween.

The reviews are overwhelmingly positive so far, though, so I'm not tooooooo worried.

Yet.

Tales Of Halloween has at least TEN. Trick Or Treat only had four or five. This is only ten minutes longer than Trick Or Treat with twice as many segments.

I'm not worried. Just annoyed because I was hoping this would be really long.

So this was pretty entertaining for the most part. Some of the stories are a bit silly, but I get the impression they werent really trying to make this movie all that scary, so it's fine. I am pissed that alot of the great casting was WASTED. Noah Segen didnt even have any lines from memory, Caroline Williams was in it all for about 50 seconds, Felissa Rose was pretty much a background extra, and I didn't spot Barbara Crampton anywhere? (un) It doesnt even make sense because it's not like these are big name actors that cost alot of money.

Still though, I definitely recommend this, but don't expect it to be anything more than campy entertainment, otherwise you may be disappointed.

I'm also in love with that 'Pop-up Book' looking intro <3

You basically summed up my general feelings on this movie.
It was fun, entertaining, and I'd definitely watch it again but it doesn't replace Trick R' Treat on my list.
There are A LOT of cameo's(like Jared said some are realllllly small and overlooked)
I was most excited to see Lin Shaye. <3

Anyhooo definitely give a view!

I just watched this on iTunes tonight. Let me start by saying that I DID really like it, but I think those saying it's the best anthology since Trick 'r Treat are kind of overselling it. I was expecting something on par with Trick 'r Treat, and this wasn't even close.

With that said, this is a wildly entertaining little movie. It has its tongue firmly in its cheek at all times, and over-the-top ridiculousness is the complete norm for each and every one of the skits. Sometimes that ridiculousness could get a bit annoying, but it stayed fun throughout.

There were times where the film felt almost like if Chillerama tried to be Trick 'r Treat 2, but there's nothing wrong with that. It just never made it to the high quality of filmmaking as Trick 'r Treat.

I liked all of the segments. My favorite was probably Trick, Grimm Grinning Ghost, or Bad Seed. I also liked Sweet Tooth a lot. Trick was surprising, and I liked the ending twist. Grimm Grinning Ghost had a great creepy atmosphere, and it was nice to see Alex Essoe in a somewhat comedic role. Sweet Tooth was a fun, campy feat that I think could've been turned into a full-length story. I feel bad for the kiddo, though. XD Lastly, Bad Seed was just a lot of fun. It also could have been turned into a full-length feature film. I'd definitely pay to watch it.

I liked all of the segments, even though Lucky McKee may be starting to lose the touch of beauty that was so prevalent in his early work. I remember back in the day, Lucky directed films with meaning. Not that there is ANYTHING wrong with making something fun and silly (I happen to love All Cheerleaders Die), but I kind of miss his May and Roman days, where he made artistic films with real emotion behind them. With that said, those kinds of films wouldn't have suited this anthology, and I did really, really like Ding Dong. It was hilarious to see Pollyanan McIntosh in such a ridiculous, silly role after seeing her in mostly serious work. She was bloody hilarious.

Overall, I DID really like this anthology. It's better than the ABCs of Death and VHS series, but it's not better than Trick 'r Treat or Creepshow 2. I don't regret blind-buying it on iTunes, but I don't know how often I will watch this movie in the future.

Then again, I hated Chillerama when I first saw it, and now it's one of my favorites. Perhaps this one just needs to grow on me.

Grade: B+

Just finished watching this flick. Wasn't impressed. As others have pointed out, many of the stories are silly (a couple are downright awful), many stabs (heh) at black humor miss their marks and most of the performances are routinely of the direct-to-late-night-cable variety. What little I did like about it had to do with some of the cameos (like Robert "Elm Street 2" Russler, Barbara "Re-Animator" Crampton, Greg "Heroes" Grunberg, Adrienne "The Fog" Barbeau and many others, as well as directors like John Landis, Joe Dante, Trent Haaga and Stuart Gordon) and in-jokes to other horror movies/directors.

But the film itself often felt rushed, mostly because the stories are so short; ten individual segments crammed into a 90-minute running time leaves precious little opportunity to fully explore even the better ideas presented in a couple segments. Worse, some segments are little more than outright rip-offs -- er, uh, I mean, "homages" -- of better movies (for example, the second story, about a young boy assisting a sinister man in his murderous deeds, is a direct steal of the movie "Satan's Little Helper").

I think this film just goes to show that no matter how much talent you pack a movie with, if the writing sucks, the movie sucks right along with it. And while some folks have hyped this as being "the best Halloween anthology movie since 'Trick 'r Treat" (as far as I know it's actually the ONLY Halloween anthology movie since Trick 'r Treat), the fact that I didn't care for that flick either should have told me all I needed to know.

Summing up, a few spurts of fun don't make up for having to sit through the rest of this hackneyed mess. IMO, of course.

Aw, man, you're going to make me have to go re-watch the movie to remember which story she was in. (lol)

Crampton was in the story that also featured Lin Shaye and Stuart Gordon (I think it was the third story? The one after the kid with the old man I mentioned above). She was dressed as a witch, which is probably why you didn't spot her, in the scene with Shaye, Gordon and Mick Garris. Here's a screen cap I just snapped:

I think the main thing I didn't LOVE about this film was that it didn't have a good wraparound for the story. It had the Adrienne Barbeau radio show, but that wasn't as effective as how well the stories in Trick 'r Treat flowed, or even, how well the Zom-B Movie wraparound story worked in Chillerama (which this movie really IS the Trick 'r Treat-esque equivalent of).

It was still better than any of the three VHS films, though.

There's All Hallows' Eve, and I did like this one better. It isn't that much of an accomplishment to be better than a group of found footage shorts that weren't originally intended to be a film.

One thing I was pleasantly surprised by was how consistent each segment was. The style and tone didn't fluctuate a lot between segments. It definitely wasn't like the ABC's of Death, which would have some shorts that seemed like they had half the budget of the rest of them. Since these sorts of anthologies are such a trend right now, it's nice to see one that had a good amount of thought put into fitting the segments together. It felt like there was someone overseeing everything and that everyone involved had some guidance. The Weak and the Wicked is the only one that I felt didn't really fit that well.

I also think that this will be pretty rewatchable. I like some segments less than others, but none of them are horrible. I liked Sweet Tooth and Ding Dong the best. Barry Bostwick was great in The Night Billy Raised Hell. The Ransom of Rusty Rex was also good. Friday the 31st and This Means War were two of the silliest segments, and I did appreciate that they didn't push the tone too far.

Barbara Crampton is in Grimm Grinning Ghost.

Sums up Halloween for me. We as fans have 11 months of the year to be serious about the genre, but Halloween is our time to have some fun. And lots of it. I get the feeling this was the exact approach everyone was involved was aiming for.

The first 3 stories are great, setting the tone for the film and it comes full circle with the last story. In between are some ups and downs (the 4th story is the weakest imo). Loved the cameos - Mick Garris makes a perfect Phantom.

Already hanging to watch it again, wouldn't be surprised if I put it on a few times between now and Halloween.

So I was pretty disappointed by this. It's not BAD at all but between this, Trick R Treat, All Hallows Eve and All Hallows Eve 2, I have to say this is the worst which is a total shame since there were so many talented writers, directors, and actors/actresses involved. I'm really bothered that Lin Shaye and Cerina Vincent had a total of two minutes of screentime - combined. They should've been at the center of their segments.

This started off well enough with Sweet Tooth which was a really solid urban legend segment with some great gore, okay acting, and a good villain. The flashbacks were effective and it ended in a satisfying way. Plus, the guy was cute.

The Night Billy Raised Hell is when I realized that this wasn't going to be what I was wanting it to be. It was over-the-top, had very little Horror and a hell of a lot of humor and was just really weirdly done with some of the humor falling flat bigtime. I loved the way it was shot and the very end of it but...

Trick was one of my other favorites. I'm really glad I didn't read ANY descriptions of this movie at all because the basic one sentence description spoils the whole damn thing. This had a few good kills, the trick or treaters (it was obnoxious that HALF of the ten segments focused on trick or treaters, but whatever) were okay I guess, I liked the characters despite their like...ninety seconds of screentime and it was entertaining. I loved the mini-chase<3.

The Weak And The Wicked barely even felt Halloween themed. It honestly could've taken place in any season on any day. I loved the female villain and the very end of it. There was a nice poetic justice about this that I liked and even though the style was really jarring at first it grew on me by the segment's end. Good but not great and Noah Segan was in it but didn't even get ONE damn line of dialogue. Total waste!

Grim Grinning Ghost was a total build up segment. The urban legend (another one, sigh) was okay I guess but nothing special. It was mildly suspenseful but didn't have me on edge at all and while I loved the jumpscare and the ending, I was left wanting more.

Ding Dong - This was alright. It was one of Lucky's worst works I've seen but the performances saved it for me and I love Polyanna Mcintosh and how this included some characters from other segments to sort of fit them together.

This Means War - Totally silly and I didn't really care for it. It was really predictable and nothing really happened that kept me glued to it. Nice decorations though!

Friday The 31st - Okay so this could've been the awesome slasher segment of the movie but instead, they had to get all weird with the damn alien and...urgh. The alien was SO fucking adorable though and I really loved how gory this got. I'm a sucker for chainsaws so I can't say I was TOO disappointed by this. I just wish it'd been a straightforward slasher segment.

The Ransom Of Rusty Rex - Definitely one of my favorites. It flows well, the humor works (unlike some of the other segments), and the big 'reveal' was okay I guess. I sort of wish it had been revealed that
Spoiler: click to toggle

Bad Seed - Okay so I really think this should've been the wraparound story since it's the only one to have characters spending time talking about what was going on around the town. The killer pumpkin thing was funny but really, really stupid and a piss poor way to end the film imo. Yay for Kristina Klebe though!

6/10 quality, 7/10 entertainment. Good but could've and should've been better.
