The Village is a 2004 American psychological thriller film, written, produced, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan about a village whose inhabitants live in fear of creatures inhabiting the woods beyond it. The movie received mixed reviews due to the "twist" ending. The film gave composer James Newton Howard his fourth Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score. Despite the initial mixed reaction to the film, critics' opinion on the film has been more positive in recent years and has since developed a cult following especially among M. Night Shyamalan fans.

Kind of surprised to find out this made over $256 MILLION in theaters since I've heard almost no good things about this. I still plan on watching it soon though, mainly out of curiosity. It's now on Netflix.

We must not like M. Night Shyamalan movies or just never think about them. This is less of an oversight than The Sixth Sense, but I do remember this being a pretty big deal when it was released.

I'd say that it's okay. The cast is really good, which always helps with these kinds of movies. The atmosphere is very nice, too. It just ends up being a little bland. The twist isn't bad, but it doesn't make enough of an impact.

Saw this in the theater. It's okay. I got it on DVD, and used to watch it ever so often, but I've put it off the past several years. Might have to just hunker down and watch it again.

I kidded myself about the twist ending, and funny enough I was right.

Good, this is on Netflix now so I don't have to buy the DVD (cheap as it may be).

I think this is a little underrated. It got a lot of hate for the twist, and I remember at the time hating it as well. But everything leading up to it was great and the scene in the forest fucking terrified me when I was a kid. Besides Darkness Falls, no other movie got me the way that did.

Puppy, just because there's no evidence she killed her aunt doesn't make her dating material.

Gotta say I enjoyed this quite a bit. I could relate to its themes and the idea that not everything is as it seems. The twist ending was alright but as mentioned above it wasn't as impactful as I was expecting.

Gorgeous film. It's a cool little movie that isn't a true horror per say but I still find it fascinating to watch.

Fairly great movie, just mis-marketed as hell.

What I'm about to say may stir up some big wildfire, but I believe Shyamalan has been given WAY too much flack for his films. I believe what he has been stuck with, is that he has been pigeonholed as being someone who makes horror films with a major twist in it, and it's been going on ever since The Sixth Sense. If you look at the trailers/commercials for this film and Lady in the Water, you'd probably expect them to be a rollercoaster horror film with a big-ass twist to it, when in reality they are entirely different. Never judge a book simply by its cover, go in with an open mind. Take Signs for example, if you look at the "water kills aliens" thing in a religious perspective, it actually makes entirely different sense, the aliens are demons and the water is holy water.

Many people say this movie is shit, but with me being the sort-of "movie defense attorney", I'd have to say "OBJECTION!", look at the production design, the village setting is immensely gorgeous to look at, makes me want to live there. James Newton Howard's music score is wonderful to listen to. Shyamalan had finally made William Hurt emote in a movie, unlike in Hurt's other film Lost in Space, where he says "I love you, wife" in the most Xanax'd out way possible.

But still, I'd say for people to give Shyamalan's movies another look, there quite possible is something underneath them that may make you appreciate them in some capacity. I really enjoyed Signs as a kid, it really freaked me out as a kid, and I still enjoy it now despite the flaws it has. I am honestly glad to see him having his lil comeback thanks to Split, I'm a bit excited for his next film Glass, which is intended to be the third chapter in his Unbreakable-Split universe.

I said it once before and I'll say it again, this is a pretty great movie. The marketing was all wrong though. You're right about him being pigeonholed. Not only as a horror director, but one that has to include a twist ending. I very much like The Village. Lady in the Water? Not so much (sick)

I have to give The Happening another go. I liked it when it first came out and never really watched it since then, but I let mob mentality tell me otherwise that that was a horrible film. Like how Garden State doesn't hold up. That's for me to decide. For myself, of course.

I had honestly enjoyed The Happening when I first watched it. Shyamalan had already said he intended for that film to be like a B-movie, and had described it as "The Birds meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers", which is honestly a pretty good way to view the film. I immensely love Body Snatchers, so of course I'll give a shot at any movie that has that similar kind of vibe. I honestly was not that disappointed by the "killer plants" twist, I thought "yea, I'd believe that, plants getting revenge on mankind", I've always believed that plants and trees are "alive", so, uh, yea, the idea of a biological toxin that makes its affected victims kill themselves in elaborate ways, had really grew onto me in its ads, it reminded me a lot of such a similar (albeit extraterrestrial) toxin in The Andromeda Strain. And hell, I thought John Leguizamo was decent, if not pretty good in this.

And y'know for a movie that is R-rated, it sure is pretty tame in its graphic violence/gore, but I will say the one scene where a guy, affected by the toxin, lays down awaiting the approaching lawnmower to run him over, always makes me wide-eyed every time. And I remember back in high-school, the news of this being Shyamalan's first R-rated film was a huge topic of conversation in the "playgrounds".
