While video chatting one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who killed herself exactly one year ago. A first they think it's a prank, but when the girl starts revealing the friends' darkest secrets, they realize they are dealing with something out of this world, something that wants them dead. Told entirely from a young girl's computer desktop, CYBERNATURAL redefines 'found footage' for a new generation of teens.

So there's now a possibility that you won't see it in theaters at all?
I'll still see it, but totally not taking my friend who's going to be hanging over Monday to see it if I hear it's shit. XD

Don't worry. I give this my firm recommendation as, so far, one of the best horror movies of the year (behind only It Follows). Laura was an amazing villain, kind of like Regina George meets Freddy Krueger at times. And I loved the cast, especially the final girl Blaire, who turned out to be a lot more interesting than she looked at first (though I can't really say why). It's not jump-out-of-your-seat scary; it's more creepy, and feels almost like a psychological thriller at times, with Laura interrogating the main characters and getting them to spill all their dirty secrets. I wouldn't quite call it a true classic, but it was definitely something I haven't seen before, and used the gimmick of taking place on a computer screen to great effect.

My full review is here.
Well I'm slightly relived. I'll see what my friend thinks of the trailer first before we go. I'm still seeing it the day after if he doesn't like what he sees.

I actually think watching this online would be pretty cool and, like The Den, beneficial to the effect of it. I'm still going to see it one or two times in theaters but I'll definitely watch it on my laptop after it's on DVD or Netflix or something just to see if it makes it more effective or something.
Yeah, this is definitely one of those movies that seems like it was tailor-made for viewing on VOD through a computer.

Worldwide: $18,324,015

And apparently only $55,000 of that is from countries outside of the U.S. Has this not been released worldwide yet or something?

It hasn't opened in some of the bigger countries, and they haven't added Canada yet.

Ah, gotcha. I sort of figured that since $55,000 is VERY low, especially since it's made a decent amount here so far.

I bet I'll be right about it making roughly $70,000,000. (cool)

And yes, I'll post my review later (tomorrow). :P

So like I said before, I wasn't expecting anything too good from it. I figured it'd be on the level of Devil's Due and The Devil Inside when it comes to my opinion - average, somewhat entertaining with a couple of really good moments, but nothing special overall. Thankfully I was wrong and I'm right there with Kevin in thining this is one of the better 2015 releases so far. It did take me a while to get used to the way it was presented (it's all on a computer screen) but once bad things started happening, that real time method made it all the more effective and helped make a pretty basic been-there-done-that 'supernatural revenge/slasher' story pretty fresh - in some ways at least.

The plot is super simple. Girl is a bitch, girl passes out at party, girl gets filmed and harassed when the video is uploaded to Youtube, girl commits suicide, girl's ghost targets the six people she sees as responsible for her death. Simplicity at its best, but it managed to have an interesting level relating to cyberbullying. I just wish it had been more clear that Laura herself wasn't a great person and that she had in fact treated everyone like shit before her death. It would've brought a cool Freddy Krueger (bad person who is killed but seeks revenge anyway even though he did terrible things while alive) angle to it. It also would've been nice if the teens had humiliated a bully only to have that bull return to torment them again. Since I feel that was their intention anyway, I don't hold the lack of exploration of that against the film. I just wish they had hammered home the point that NONE of the seven teens were innocent.

The characters were a mixed bag but I didn't love or hate ANY of them. They were realistic enough to enjoy watching (those arguments they had felt SO fucking real!) but angry and mean enough to dislike so I'm on the fence with them all, which is probably what the makers aimed for. Blaire was a pretty solid lead but mainl just because she wasn't a clichéd good girl AT ALL. In fact, she's probably one of the most harsh of them all (next to Little Miss Deface Graves and Mister "She Deserved To Die For Being A Bitch"). (lol)

The deaths were appropriately shocking with the blender scene and the curling iron scene fucking with my eyes in the best way possible. What the deaths (and there were more than expected!) lacked in straight up gore they made up for in shock value. Laura's methods of toying with the other six = AWESOME! The scene with the printed out papers had me on edge and they even managed to make a game of Never Have I Ever intense. ;)

The ending was a bit of a generic boo-scare letdown though and I honestly think it would've been MUCH more effective had it ended with
Spoiler: click to toggle

Still, I don't blame them for the ending and it still works despite not being what I WANTED. So yeah, overall this was surprisingly good. I doubt I'll see it again in theaters but I definitely plan on buying it, especially if the BluRay contains the alternate scenes (or even the alternate version of the film itself!). Solid film despite a super short runtime (which managed to work in its favor since it would've gotten tiring if it'd been 100+ minutes as opposed to 82) and a handful of obvious flaws.

6-7/10 quality, 8/10 entertainment.

Yeah. And it makes more sense than 'Unfriended' since more time is spent trying to figure out if the extra person tormenting them in the chat is Laura, a troll, a stalker, etc. and not people unfriending eachother on sites or whatever.

Still 'frozen' at that amount so I'm *guessing* that's the final amount. Again; that's actually really good since this had a budget of only $1,000,000 or so.
