![]() While video chatting one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who killed herself exactly one year ago. A first they think it's a prank, but when the girl starts revealing the friends' darkest secrets, they realize they are dealing with something out of this world, something that wants them dead. Told entirely from a young girl's computer desktop, CYBERNATURAL redefines 'found footage' for a new generation of teens. Coming April 17th 2015 Edited by JethroClemson, Jan 13 2015, 04:06 AM.

I finally watched this tonight. I bought it from iTunes. I think it was a very unique idea for a movie and is honestly pretty significant due to the extreme amounts of cyberbulling that goes on every single day. I think the movie did a fine job of getting into what it feels like when you're onilne 24/7, from the Skype conversations on video, while actually IMing other people at the same time, to searching Facebook, to reading links and emails, etc. all at the same time. It was frantic, and at times quite annoying, but it was very true to what it's like to live in this internet age. I think most of the charactesr wer realistic enough, particularly the character of Jess, who looked and felt very much like a teenage girl. The acting, as a whole, was pretty good from all of the cast members, as was the writing for their charactesr. The dialogue felt organic, as did the IM messages. Usually when a film tries to emulate text and IM conversations, it goes too far with the "you're" and the "u" an the "wut" type of speech, but this movie had just enough of real grammar and internet vernacular, and I think that added to the realism of the film. I even found myself trying to click on tabs that were open in the movie to move them away so I could see more of the webcam action. That makes me pretty damn stupid, but it just goes to show how well this film did when it came to portraying a laptop screen. I also quite liked the kills. They were creepy enough to disturb me, but not overly gory or cheap-looking. The best one in particular has to be Spoiler: click to toggle Lastly, I thought all of the characters were decently sympathetic. None of them are good people, and as the film goes on, you see that all of them have done some pretty horrible things to others, particularly to each other, and that just made them even more realistic as teenagers. Every person did something cruel and horrible when they were a teen, but most of us never speak about it. These kids were forced to. I did have a few minor (and some not so) quibbles with the film, though. The editing, at times, was too much. The webcam cutting in and out in terms of visuals became incredibly anonying, and it got to the point where the editor and director were obviously trying way too hard to give it a "real" internet vibe, but instead it just became annoying. Secondly, they really should've worked harder in the editing room to make sure everything stayed the same throughout and that the screw-ups weren't overly obvious... But sadly, they were incredibly so. I am not usually one to get annoyed at continuity errors, but this movie's got pretty excessive by the end. First off, towards the beginning, Blaire deletes Laura from Facebook... Twenty minutes later, she goes to Blaire's profile, and they're still friends, apparently having been friends since "January." I can look past the deleting part, as the movie shows plenty of times that the presence is capable of changing things back to how she wants it... But at the same time, Laura's death was supposed to been exactly a year prior, thus the film is supposed to take place in April... A few issues there. How have they been friends since THIS PAST JANUARY if she died the April before that? There are also even more continuity errors with timestamps and message tabs. Blaire's Facebook message tabs change once or twice throughout the film, and also imply that she only recently started messaging people. I'm just being nitpicky, I know... I just think the editors should have tried a little bit harder to make sure the months of each picture were correct, but, this is a low-budget teen movie, so I can try to look past it. The only thing I truly hated was the last scene. I'm all for endings like that, but I really wish it had ended just ten seconds prior. Spoiler: click to toggle Oh, lastly... I watched this with earphones, and whenever creepy stuff happened, ominous music would play lightly. It was well-made and creepy music, but the film would have been so much better without it. I am really annoyed by these kinds of POv/found-footage/webcam/what have you films that are not supposed to be normal films, yet have a musical score that plays... That's another minor issue, but it's still easy to look past... Somewhat. Overall, I think this was a pretty solid teen horror movie, and I applaud it for having an honest message about cyberbullying and just how fucked up and nasty it can be. It reminded me of that famous story about those girls who filmed themselves ganging up on their friend who had shit-talked them, cornering her and beating her up for an entire video, one that ended up goign viral, with people in YouTube comments saying that "she deserved it." Cyberbullying is one of the biggest epidemics among youth (but not JUST youth) today, and I am glad this film made a horror story out of it. I just wish they had tried harder in the editing of this film to make sure the time and continuity added up a little better... Or at least messed up in a less obvious way. A lot of the errors stuck out like a sore thumb. I still enjoyed it overall. Grade: B |

I liked this more than I thought I would, but this isn't allowed to become the new trend. I only got two gifs out of this, and it took me two tries. Found footage is already hard enough. This is one of those movies that always feel like they're on the edge of disaster. I think the cast is the biggest reason it was able to avoid it. Some of them were better than others, but the cast made the film much more realistic. I'm still not sold on Will Peltz or Renee Olstead. Watching it on my laptop definitely helped with immersion. The cyberbullying storyline was interesting. It's definitely one of the more realistic portrayals of the issue that I've ever seen. Another thing that I really liked is that they had one character that knew what he was doing with computers, and that it wasn't totally just magic. They were actually able to do things technologically to mess with the ghost. I agree with Aaron about the ending. Spoiler: click to toggle The editing bothered me a lot, too. I thought this spent a long time in post-production, so I would have hoped that they would have been able to take care of all of that stuff. Having one tab on the Teen Wolf page on MTV's website when the lead actress is from Teen Wolf was a cute touch. I like her a lot, so I'm glad to see her branching out into horror movies. Renee Olstead can stay away from horror, though. My Secret Life of the American Teenager ban applies to her. |

I thought Renee did one of the best jobs in the movie when it came to portraying actual teenagers, to be honest. And I'm glad you agree with me that having a more ironic ending rather than typical horror would've been a better choice. It was mostly just the editing that angered me. I'm not a stickler for continuity by any means, but if you're going to make a film that really DOES rely on good editing, you should at least make sure DATES add up properly and don't change back and forth every three minutes. |

I thought her scared faces were really repetitive. I think it's probably one of those things that bugged me more than it normally would, because I was watching the big scenes clipped out of the movie and in a row and in slow motion, which they don't really intend for people to be doing. |

I'm SO pissed that the BluRay is totally barebones. No trailer, no deleted/alternate scenes (and there are plenty of those...we just won't ever see them), no making-of, no commentary. Nothing. I'm getting really sick of lazy releases. The Town That Dreaded Sundown, this, and (not as annoying but it still should've gotten more) It Follows along with a bunch of other shitty barebones releases this year. |

^ I agree. Like I told you over the phone, it wouldn't be nearly as annoying if these movies had come out barebones maybe ten years ago. Back in like 2005, I wouldn't have given a shit if The Town That Dreaded Sundown had no features. With how long we were all waiting for that shit, I wouldn't care... But now that we have the luxury of Netflix, where virtually all of these films are soon to become a part of, there is no point in buying a barebones DVD when two days later it will end up for free on Netflix streaming. Barebones horror DVDs are just so 2004. |

I dont know about this one. I dont really like the found footage thing and the watching a computer screen thing isn't also my thing... But, it could have been worse and its a nice little social commentary on the lack of social skills on social networks but also the hypocrisy of people on it(the whole blaming game). |

But...even then, it's doubly frustrating since we got some AMAZING DVD releases in the early-mid 2000s. The first three Final Destinations, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and The Beginning, the first three Saw films, Hatchet, Black Christmas (2006), Freddy Vs Jason, Cabin Fever, etc. Those and many, many others got good releases so if they could come to us overflowing with features, the least that Unfriended, It Follows, The Town That Dreaded Sundown, etc. could get is a 60 minute making-of or a cast/crew commentary (instead of just a critic commentary).

I almost think that they add things to Netflix Instant just so that people remember they exist when the dvd comes out with the huge delays some distributors have between VOD and dvd releases. Inner Demons came out on VOD at the beginning of October and just got a dvd release this month. I almost think they had to put it on Netflix Instant to get some new reviews and press, because no one would have remembered it otherwise. |

Yeah, stick with that. Besides, this is pretty much a film that's made to be watched on a computer. I'm not too shaken up by the lack of a robust DVD/Blu-Ray release, though it does sting a little. Hope Scream! Factory or someone like that gets a hold of it in ten years and gives it a proper treatment. When the price comes down, though, I might just pick this up. |
