![]() While video chatting one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who killed herself exactly one year ago. A first they think it's a prank, but when the girl starts revealing the friends' darkest secrets, they realize they are dealing with something out of this world, something that wants them dead. Told entirely from a young girl's computer desktop, CYBERNATURAL redefines 'found footage' for a new generation of teens. Coming April 17th 2015 Edited by JethroClemson, Jan 13 2015, 04:06 AM.

Yeah. I can feel this film being one to eventually garner a cult following, as it's surprisingly graphic, and more importantly, surprisingly GOOD, but people still love to hate on it. I can feel it garnering a following in a few years, to be honest. At least I hope so. |

Frankly this was one of the most putrid and worthless attempted horror-films around. There’s barely anything about this one that makes any sense at all about what’s going on as there’s little to get invested in this one. Simply sitting around watching these people continuously click off computer windows or cycle between screens while typing out their dialog with each other over a computer chat despite being on the phone with them makes for some utterly uninteresting viewing, and that this one goes through as much as it does with these different computer programs before even getting to the main gist of the plot that it’s incredibly boring while highlighting the other depressing fact here that there’s little about this group that’s worthwhile at all. This is a pretty hard group to get to like since all they seem to do here is basically insult each other or spend the entire time pouring over their computer programs as if they’re the greatest ever at that possible program and everyone else is a complete loser for not knowing the simplest functions, and then the fact that later on they become so easy to twist around on each other makes this all the more likely they haven’t been all that friendly with each other. Granted, the fact that this all manages to feel authentically modern for the teenage crowd is a nice point, but when their behavior trends toward the intolerable there’s not a whole big point about it being portrayed as such throughout here. Another factor with this here is the fact that the editing here leaves so much to be desired with the haphazard way it all comes together with the how weird and obscure this one comes off switching from all the different screens and programs. Likewise, the film’s biggest problem here is that the whole set-up about the revenge comes about so late here since this one tends to go for the strange figure just being a complete cyber-creeper without really doing much about it that there’s a seemingly endless amount of time where it does nothing but be a nuisance to them before actually going for the kill that this one really seems to stumble along with the lone figure just lurking around them before it gets to the whole point of it all, and then the factor of keeping it based more on thrilling games than actual chilling haunting-type scenarios causes this one to lurch along even limply along after it’s apparent that something’s going on. Playing the simplistic games and just not doing anything chilling here by remaining a thriller rather than a true horror film does some big damage here that really shouldn’t be the case. There’s a few positives, in that the issue of cyberbullying among the current generation is so successfully utilized in all the different social media outlets that it really feels like a modern-day cautionary tale that’s how the best properly-utilized tales are featured. As well, there’s also how impressive and enjoyable this gets once it goes for the final half where it finally features the revenge accomplished by the ghost in a strong series of stalking and ambush scenes that are quite fun and chilling with some nice graphic kills included to finish this off nicely. Still, the flaws here are pretty apparent and detrimental. |

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's one of the most 'putrid and worthless' around. It's flawed sure, but like you said, it's pretty violent for a teen-aimed Horror film (I do see it as Horror, not a thriller) and works well as a cautionary tale of sorts. I actually really liked that the deaths didn't start happening right away and that it took its time building things up a bit before going pretty crazy in the last thirty minutes or so. Plus, it's only 80 minutes long including credits so it isn't like they spent ninety minutes building up to a ten minute finale or something. |

I thought we got to know plenty about them for a film that that took place in the same room for the entire film, a film that is quite short. I thought the character development was just fine. I also thought the film was quite tense and disturbing at times. Exactly how a horror film should be. It's quite dark, and it's also very relevant to today's youth, with how rampant cyber-bullying has become. Putrid isn't really a word I'd think of for this one. |

It's more the quality of the flaws than anything else, because to me those are flat-out unappealing and almost unwatchable types of flaws present for me. A group of uninteresting people sitting around doing nothing but clicking off computer windows, arguing and yelling at each other despite the fact that they're a tight-knit group of friends for a long period of time, non-threatening thriller tendencies replacing horror and haphazardly-edited kills that are near-impossible to make-out even if the general concept behind them are creative and cruel are all pretty much destined to irritate me more than anything, and this one had them all in spades. The quantity of these flaws is bad enough, but those are flat-out no-doubt dealbreakers when it comes to films and this one was filled with them. Sure, a few singularly fine and isolated pieces aren't that bad, but it's the overall amount of damaging flaws that hindered it for me. |

I always thought the asshole characters (who probably secretly hate each other) were the whole point of the movie. The reason Laura was going after them was because none of them would admit their complicity in having bullied her into killing herself. When people with that backstory are your main characters, nothing can really change the fact that they're assholes, and like you said, the film is a morality play about cyberbullying. That said, I can see why this part especially would be divisive -- a group of modern teenagers acting like assholes, and in stereotypically millennial ways at that, definitely strikes a chord. I also think that the boundary between the "thriller" and "horror" genres is a very fine and blurry one, and a great many films can easily fall into both. I saw this as one of those, and for me, it was one of the film's strengths. I didn't care that Laura took so long to start killing people -- she's got them trapped (even if they don't know it initially) and has all the time in the world to torment them, and given the implications that she was one of the "mean girls" in life, she was probably having a blast doing so. And lest we forget, eventually the bodies do start hitting the floor. She wasn't acting that differently from Freddy Krueger, IMO. As for the editing with the constant switching of windows and programs... that's pretty much exactly how I use my computer. I didn't notice anything weird about it. Lol, that's pretty much my Hate Crime script. A bunch of dickish gay guys who bully each other and other people. And one gets targeted on Adam4Adam by the killer. ![]() And I agree with you completely, Kevin. It only took half the runtime to kill anyone. That's not very different from Freddy Krueger who only killed ONE person in the first 51 minutes of the first film and only killed four people in a 92 minute period. Compare that to this - 6/7 kills in 78 minutes or so (not counting credits). Of course, the original Nightmare IS a better film than this. But the pacing isn't that different. So if the pacing and the time it takes to kill anyone alone causes this to not be a Horror film then... |

This was pretty decent. Liked the atmosphere, it is creepy at times, good pacing, Blair was an interesting lead... To say the least. The ending jump scare is so tacked on and unnecessary, though. Aside from that, maybe having someone you could actually root for wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world Edited by Repo, Oct 8 2016, 06:52 PM.

That would've worked. To be honest, all three potential endings work well. Spoiler: click to toggle #3 is my personal favorite and the sort of way I WISH the film had ended. I don't hate the ending we got but options 2 and 3 are better. I'm still surprised that I liked this as much as I did. I might actually rewatch it soon. I've had the DVD for a while. I might watch it on my laptop. |
