The film follows “Cinema Archivist David Williams, who lives with his wife, Alice, and their 5-year-old son, Billy. All seems well until David begins to suspect that Alice is cheating on him. His anxiety is then compounded by a bizarre coincidence at work: cataloguing a film-reel from 1902, he learns that his home was the site of a brutal series of murders by a man named William Jackson, who slew his wife for being unfaithful and drowned both of their children in the nearby canal. As David’s suspicions grow, a shadowy figure of a man, who resembles Jackson, starts to appear to him and David becomes convinced that this ‘evil supernatural presence’ that inhabits his house, never ever wants him or his family to leave.”

Doesn't sound too bad but damn...why couldn't it be about the murders? Lol.

And that girl looks like the zombie on one of the Survival Of The Dead posters.

Film archivist David (Rupert Evans) has been having a rough time lately, as he suspects that his wife Alice (Hannah Hoekstra) has been cheating on him with Alex (Carl Shaaban), one of her work clients. This stress is compounded when David's work partner Claire (Antonia Campbell-Hughes) gives him a reel of to-be-archived footage that shows that his house was the setting for a brutal murder in 1902. Becoming progressively more unsettled and unhinged, David begins to believe that a spectral presence is in his house and ends up following his wife to a nearby canal, where he discovers that she is indeed having an affair with Alex. When Alice goes missing shortly afterwards, David contacts the police- only to become the prime suspect in her disappearance. As the police grow more convinced that David has murdered his wife, he struggles to find proof of his growing suspicion that something otherworldly was instead responsible.

This really slipped under the radar. Not only did we forget to move this when it was released back in like October, but we also had two of them.

So I kept reading on websites that this is one of the best - some even said it was THE best - of 2014 so I went in with mixed expectations. I wanted to love it but I was afraid it was going to be a disappointment and in some ways, both were the case here. I expected something genuinely haunting and creepy but instead got something that, while fantastic on a technical and storytelling level, failed to raise any hairs, really.

While, like I said, it's not exactly SCARY, it definitely oozes with a deliciously dark atmosphere and some of the old footage is kind of disturbing. Vanessa should watch this and have a field day with the screencaps (but probably not Gifs). (lol)
I really liked *some* of the characters, while others either pissed me off to no end, drifted into the background after like two minutes in the spotlight, or just didn't have much to do at all. I really wish we had gotten more of Alice and David's relationship before all of the badness started to happen. Instead, we just got a couple minutes of a 'peek' into their marriage which disappointed me. I wanted to see more of how the revelation that she was cheating with Alex changed him, damn it! Oh well. This still didn't do a bad job there. *Shrug*

Speaking of Alex, he was mildly attractive but David was better looking, and I didn't care for Alex. It REALLY annoyed me that Alice's mother was pretty cool with what Alice had been doing behind David's back and was pretty much victim blaming. Cunt. It's been a couple of weeks (probably the reason for this) and I've totally forgotten most of what made up the McNamara character. He was interesting when watching but was the only one of the handful of leads that didn't 'pop' in some way. Oh well. I really loved David and Claire and their bond together. One part involving the projector screen and Claire got me a little bit and got Robby BIGTIME. (lol) I really liked the nanny though she didn't play as big of a role in the events of the story as I wished she had. Boo.

I liked that they made pretty much everyone suspicious at some point but I must admit that I saw the ending coming from the halfway mark (if not before then) onward. Again; oh well. As predictable as some parts of this were, they still did a pretty terrific job of telling the story. I wouldn't mind watching this again (scratch that - I actually WANT to watch it again) but it'll be a while.

7.5/10 quality, 7/10 entertainment.

I loved the look of this, but I didn't love the movie. There's a lot of very evocative images that I really loved. The scares were good. Even though I didn't like all of the ending, I thought it did a decent job of rewarding viewers for sticking through the slow burn of the rest of the movie. I also appreciate the spin on the title at the end of the film. I thought that some of the playing with references were fun, except a handful that were a bit too direct or featured too prominently.

The crime drama and mystery aspects of the plot were what I really had an issue with. There's tons of holes in that part of the story. The mystery took the approach of just adding more details without putting them together, which I'm not really that into.

One of the most scariest viewing experiences in the past 2 years was for this. My and some friends were up at midnight and wanting to watch a horror movie and I remember hearing about this vaguely and randomly clicked it and thinking it'd be as bad as the poster would suggest but it was way more serious than I expected. It had some great scares to it and a wonderfully haunting atmosphere.

I do think the trailer makes it look more like haunted house movie (which it was not) and scary .

I thought opening scene was strange way to start a movie, I thought rest of the movie was good .

A guy finds out that is house as history of murders, meanwhile he finds out his wife was cheating on him , while he went into the canal , as he heard it was haunted ( which had really good surreal moment )

Then his wife ends up missing and found dead near the canal, soon the husband. Think that him and his son are haunted by the ghost he saw in the canal )

I did not like the twist at all , I did see it coming , I don't think the movie hide It really well, But I really liked those scenes after the twist.

Good movie
