Doesn't really give a clear image of what it is exactly, but oh well, could be good. The poster font sort of reminds me of I Saw The Devil's poster. >_> |

Longer summary: After their teenage son is killed in a car crash, Paul (Andrew Sensenig) and Anne (Barbara Crampton) move to the quiet New England countryside to try to start a new life for themselves. But the grieving couple unknowingly becomes the prey of a family of vengeful spirits that reside in their new home, and before long they discover that the seemingly peaceful town they've moved into is hiding a terrifyingly dark secret. Now they must find a way to overcome their sorrow and fight back against both the living and dead as the malicious ghosts threaten to pull their souls - and the soul of their lost son - into hell with them. I like the poster a lot, and The House by the Cemetery is an interesting movie to use as inspiration. |

Now this is how you do a paranormal horror film. I already knew I would like it (I'm usually pretty picky when it comes to movies about hauntings/ghosts), but I didn't know I would like it as much as I did. The cold winter setting and the creeky old house really gave it a bonus, and on top of that I didn't expect there to be much of a bodycount, if at all, and yet we got about 8 (or more?!) deaths that were surprisingly bloody and well done. I'm also glad that when you finally do get to see the ghosts, they aren't some un-scary CGI mess, and while I couldn't call them necessarily scary, they were a bit unsettling. Barbara Crampton and Lisa Marie were definitely the stand outs to me. While I don't agree that Barbara's acting was bad in You're Next, she did do a lot better here, but that's probably because she had a bit more to work with. I'd probably give this an 8/10. It probably wont end up being my favorite horror film in general of the year, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being my favorite in the paranormal category. Definitely recommended. |

I agree with Jared completely<3. Watched this with Robby almost a week ago and we both ended up loving it. I really hope that this ends up getting a lot of attention and praise from the Horror community in general (but not the random hatred weeks later like every other well liked Horror film gets nowadays) if it hasn't already. While I loved Aubrey in You're Next, I definitely think Anne was a much better character and Barbara Crampton DID give a better performance here. Like J said though, that might just be because Anne was the lead while Aubrey was just a secondary character with like 7 minutes of screentime. Anne did kind of bother me since every five minutes she seemed to be like, "Oh it's Bobby! Bobby's contacting us" even when it was obvious that it was something a lot more sinister than their dead son. Still, she was really sympathetic and in general, she was a great lead. Her husband Paul (lol@her fictional husband being named Paul in ANOTHER film!) was also likeable but he was probably my least favorite of the two main couples. May was my second favorite. She and some of the others here definitely felt like characters that would show up in a Fulci film. I also really liked Jacob. Imo, Larry Fessenden can't be in enough Horror films. Love the guy. And it was really cool that he Spoiler: click to toggle I liked the younger couple as well but they only had a couple of scenes and not too much to do. Spoiler: click to toggle The townspeople were also interesting and had a weirdness about them that made it obvious that something wasn't quite right with them from the get go.The gore here was INSANE! We got well over a dozen (I counted a total of Spoiler: click to toggle ) crazy, bloody kills. People getting punched through their torso, heads blown off, stabbings, skulls being broken (with bare hands!) and more. This was even more gruesome than I was expecting (and I was expecting SOME bloodshed thanks to J's review) and I couldn't have been happier. The story wasn't super detailed but it had just enough backstory and whatnot to keep it from blending in too much with other films of this sort. They didn't overexplain things to the point of it all being tiring but they did spend quite a bit of time giving information about the history of the house (which is later recapped in a really cool ending credits sequence so be sure to keep watching after the film ends). The spirits are really creepy, effective, and felt more like the Silent Hill spirits Spoiler: click to toggle |

I liked a lot of stuff about this. The cast was fun. I hadn't really noticed anyone other than Barbara Crampton in the promotional stuff, but there's a lot of familiar faces. I hadn't realized that Monte Markam had started a comeback. Larry Fessenden was great, of course. He made ever scene he was in better. (I'm really hoping that In a Valley of Violence will raise his profile a bit.) The score and cinematography were really nice touches. The look of the film really captured the throwback style they were going for. I think going the subtle route of setting the film in the past suited it really well. The effects were really great. I do wish that they had left out a lot of the humor. I like this sort of throwback stuff, and I still didn't think some of the humor landed. It seems kind of alienating to the audience. The denouement was also a bit too long. As far as my 2015 rankings go, it's currently in fifth and between The Voices and Spring. |

Liked this too! Didn't expect that much blood from a paranormal movie though. And those burned ghost were creepy as heck. |

I liked this one, it had a great cast that had good chemistry and a good execution. And I must say, it was nice to see a cast that was a little older than your typical teen wannabe cast. Also, I love that poster. |

This was a pretty tragic film. It was also a lot more brutal than I could've expected from a slow-burn haunted house flick from Dark Sky. The film revolves around a married couple who are trying to cope and start fresh after losing their son in an accident. What sets this movie apart from countless other grieving couple horror movies is that the characters of Annie and Paul are still very much in love. In most films that are about a couple who have lost a child, it either shows their relationship crumble, or it starts after it's already crumbled... But we don't get any of that here. We get two people who still love and need and care for each other very mcuh, and that was pretty refreshing to see. The acting was a mixed bag. The two leads, particularly Barbara Crampton, were amazing, but most of the supporting characters were medium-good, but seeing as the film's focus is on Crampton and Sensenig, that's not a big deal by any means, as they carry the film perfectly, with plenty of emotion to spare. Spoiler: click to toggle The film's ending was also very unique. Spoiler: click to toggle Overall, this was a very good film. I wish it could have been longer, so we could've gotten more slow-burn early on, but it's still a very great horror film that packs an ugly punch. Plus, I've noticed a lot of the films of the early 80s this film was trying to reference and be an homage to were fairly short, as well, so I guess it really fits. I could definitely see the similarities between this and The House By the Cemetery, even though this one made a little more sense. ![]() Grade: A- Edited by Neurotic Chainsaw, Feb 8 2016, 08:44 AM.

^ A 7 is a pretty good rating for this. I'd probably give it closer to an 8 or so though. I like it more the more I think about it. I really don't know why I haven't bought the DVD (or BluRay) yet. |
