This might seem a bit odd (ok, a lot odd), but my friend's two sons - aged 11 and 8 - are itching to start exploring the horror genre and really want to watch something with zombies in it. Because my friend is a good parent, she came to me to ask for any recommendations for horror-lite stuff that might be suitable for kids. I came up with Tremors (funny, not too scary, big worms) and Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated (don't laugh - my daughter (who is 6) was looking through our DVD cupboard, found my Hellraiser boxset and said 'Mummy, that box and that monster are in Scooby Doo' - and she's right, there are indeed Cenobites in Mystery Inc!), but wondered if anyone else had any suggestions? She's already done The Goonies and Beetlejuice, and I think she's got Ghostbusters, but there has to be something else out there she can let them see to prepare them for their inevitable sneak-watching of Dawn of the Dead or something... |

Zombies is a bit hard. There's Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island and ParaNorman. I haven't watched them, but there's also the Daddy, I'm a Zombie series. That one might be a bit too young for them, because my niece thought it was for babies. My 7 year old niece loved Girl vs. Monster, Monster House, Hotel Transylvania, The Adams Family, Adams Family Values, and Hocus Pocus. I don't know that you could talk two boys into watching it, but every girl in the family loved Double Double Toil and Trouble. There's also Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, Monsters vs. Aliens, Corpse Bride, and Frankenweenie. Those are probably still a bit too scary for her, but I definitely think they would be fine for a less sensitive kid. Some good ones are The Witches, The Monster Squad, and The Watcher in the Woods. They were made for kids. Arachnophobia is another good one as long as they aren't afraid of spiders. There's also Something Wicked This Way Comes, but that might be a little scary for an 8 year old. Gremlins Lady in White Poltergeist Fright Night House Once Bitten Teen Wolf Dark Shadows The Frighteners Van Helsing Black and White: House on Haunted Hill, the Universal Monster movies, The Old Dark House, the Abbott and Costello series, The Little Shop of Horrors For television shows, there's Are You Afraid of the Dark and Goosebumps. R.L Stine: Mostly Ghostly Have You Met My Ghoulfriend? |

Thanks, Vanessa! I thought of Gremlins after I posted - I think that would be okay for the 11 year old, but not the 8 year old. My kids love Coraline (they are only 6 and 3 and caught it on Film Four one afternoon whilst I was in the kitchen. I was going to turn it over, but they thought it was brilliant). The boys have watched all the new superhero films, plus LotR / Hobbit / Harry Potter stuff, so they're pretty good with aspects of fantasy horror - I'll give her your list and see what she can get hold of ;-) Thanks again! |

Tremors is a great one for kids. I think you should pull a "my grandma" and drop a Friday The 13th on them like she did me when I was four. Kidding. There are a lot of older films (bloodless murder mysteries, not too jolting ghost stories, etc) that could work for kids, though many would probably see them as "boring." Still worth a shot though. Unless they're afraid of spiders, Eight Legged Freaks is another that could work since I saw that when I was a kid and thought it was more funny than anything (though it did make me squirmy since...well...I DO have a slight fear of spiders). I'll dig through my collection later and see if I can come up with a few more titles to list off here.

Some jerk cousin convinced her that her great-grandma was possessed, so the whole Other Mother is probably too much for her until she forgets about that. She wants to watch Nightmare Before Christmas next year, as long as her Elf on the Shelf doesn't come back. She was liking it, but she started having flashbacks. It's kind of justifiable, because those things are creepy. |
